SUNY honors Oswego professors Belt, Lewis with Chancellor's Awards

The State University of New York has bestowed the 2012 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching on two professors whose work has been transformative for decades of Oswego students: John H. Belt and Tracy K. Lewis.

Belt, a teacher of technology design for 37 years at Oswego, has earned lifelong admiration among former students in many fields for his groundbreaking and rigorous teaching methods in pursuit of making the world a more livable, sustainable place, nomination materials said.

The nomination letter for Lewis, a multilingual teacher-scholar for nearly three decades and a pre-eminent expert on the literature of Paraguay, points out that he has taught Spanish, Portuguese, Spanish literature and more in challenging but supportive fashion, always ready to provide extra assistance.

‘Leader among leaders’

A longtime proponent of the work and philosophy of the late R. Buckminster Fuller, most famous for the geodesic dome, Belt has earned countless testimonials from students—and from Fuller’s daughter, Allegra Fuller Snyder, professor emerita of dance and dance ethnology at UCLA, who wrote a letter of support for his nomination.

“Over the last 10 or 15 years, I have been able to give more time and awareness to the many people who are carrying forth and developing my father’s ideas further since his death in 1983 and making them more accessible to larger groups of people, particularly students,” Snyder wrote. “I have been aware that a leader, among these leaders, is John Belt with his exciting session at his own campus at Oswego, his leadership in ‘The Synergistic Collaborative’ and the coordinator of symposiums at other institutions.”

A former colleague of Belt’s at Oswego for 13 years, Michael Adams, now president of Fairleigh Dickinson University, wrote, “John Belt is a thoughtful, demanding, supportive and transformational teacher. … He reshapes ideas and offers different and multiple views of the world.”

In an August 2010 interview, Belt said what his students make of themselves is what he treasures most. “I keep in touch with many graduates. That’s very rewarding,” he said. “One is a designer for Apple, and his only (higher) education is Oswego. His last project was the iPad. He works with (Apple designer) Jonathan Ive and Steve Jobs. Another who studied with me revamped a model design workshop, which is state of the art among East Coast industrial model builders. Another is vice president of General Electric’s Automotive Transportation. … It’s not only about the content. It’s really what they learn about themselves. It’s what they internalize.”

Another alumnus wrote that Belt “has a drive to instill in his students something most of them won’t appreciate until years later: the need to care. His life is a direct reflection of what he is trying to teach: from the composting station in his lab; to the constant running of videos of the greats such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Piet Mondrian and Buckminster Fuller; to the works of past students … Professor Belt’s philosophy has released me from the fear of the unknown and for that I am forever grateful.”

How to Clean Up a Broken CFL

Because CFLs contain a small amount of mercury, the EPA recommends the following clean-up and disposal guidelines:

1. Before you clean-up: air out

• Make sure all people and pets leave the room.
• Don't allow anyone to walk through the area where the break occurred.
• Open a window.
• Exit the room and stay out for a minimum of 5 minutes.
• Shut off any centralized heating or cooling systems in the building.

2. Clean-up steps: hard surfaces

• Do not use a vacuum or broom to clean up.
• Carefully scoop up the broken glass and powder using stiff paper such as cardstock, cardboard or paperboard.
• Place the broken pieces and powder into a glass jar with metal lid or in a plastic bag that can be sealed.
• Use duct tape to pick up any leftover glass fragments and/or powder.
• Wipe the area clean with disposable wet wipes. Place the used wipes into the glass jar or plastic bag.
• Remove jar or plastic bag from your house immediately and put it in a trash container. Some states might require you to take the bulb to a recycling center, so check with your local government.
• Wash your hands with soap and water.
• Continue to air out the room and keep central air turned off for at least an hour.

3. Clean-up steps: carpeting or rug

• Carefully scoop up the broken glass and place the pieces into a glass jar with metal lid or in a plastic bag that can be sealed.
• Use duct tape to pick up any leftover glass fragments and/or powder.
• Once you have picked up as much material as possible, a vacuum may be used only to collect any remaining glass. It's not recommended because the vacuum could spread mercury powder further.
• If you have to use a vacuum, keep a window open, use the vacuum hose and remove the vacuum bag or empty and clean the canister when you're done.
• Place the bag or vacuum debris in a plastic bag that can be sealed.
• Take the debris outside to a trash container or deliver them to a recycling center, depending on the rules of your state.
• Wash your hands with soap and water.
• Continue to air out the room and keep central air turned off for at least an hour.

4. Clean-up steps: clothing, bedding and other material

• If the debris from the broken bulb is unable to be cleaned from the fabric, discard the clothing bedding or other material.
• Do not wash the material. Mercury from the broken bulb can contaminate the washing machine and the water.
• You can, however, wash clothing or other materials that did not come into direct contact with the broken bulb. This includes any clothing being worn at the time the bulb broke, as long as direct contact wasn't made.
• If shoes come into direct contact with powder from the bulb or broken glass, wipe them off with disposable wet wipes. Place the used wipes in a glass jar or plastic bag for disposal.
• Take the debris outside to a trash container or recycling center, depending on the rules of your state.
• Wash your hands with soap and water.
• Continue to air out the room and keep central air turned off for at least an hour.

5. Future cleaning of carpeting or rug:

• The next several times you vacuum the carpeting, air out the room during and after vacuuming.
• The next few times you vacuum, shut off any centralized heating or cooling systems and open a window before begining.
• Keep the air system off and the window open for at least 15 minutes after vacuuming.
• Change the bag or clean out the canister after vacuuming.

Glaciers cracking in the presence of carbon dioxide

The well-documented presence of excessive levels of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in our atmosphere is causing global temperatures to rise and glaciers and ice caps to melt.

New research, published today, 11 October, in IOP Publishing's Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, has shown that CO₂ molecules may be having a more direct impact on the ice that covers our planet.

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute for Technology have shown that the material strength and fracture toughness of ice are decreased significantly under increasing concentrations of CO₂ molecules, making ice caps and glaciers more vulnerable to cracking and splitting into pieces, as was seen recently when a huge crack in the Pine Island Glacier in Antarctica spawned a glacier the size of Berlin.

Ice caps and glaciers cover seven per cent of the Earth—more than Europe and North America combined—and are responsible for reflecting 80–90 per cent of the Sun's light rays that enter our atmosphere and maintain the Earth's temperature. They are also a natural carbon sink, capturing a large amount of CO_2.

"If ice caps and glaciers were to continue to crack and break into pieces, their surface area that is exposed to air would be significantly increased, which could lead to accelerated melting and much reduced coverage area on the Earth. The consequences of these changes remain to be explored by the experts, but they might contribute to changes of the global climate," said lead author of the study Professor Markus Buehler.

Buehler, along with his student and co-author of the paper, Zhao Qin, used a series of atomistic-level computer simulations to analyse the dynamics of molecules to investigate the role of CO₂ molecules in ice fracturing, and found that CO₂ exposure causes ice tobreak more easily.

Notably, the decreased ice strength is not merely caused by material defects induced by CO₂ bubbles, but rather by the fact that the strength of hydrogen bonds—the chemical bonds between water molecules in an ice crystal—is decreased under increasing concentrations of CO₂. This is because the added CO₂ competes with the water molecules connected in the ice crystal.

It was shown that CO₂ molecules first adhere to the crack boundary of ice by forming a bond with the hydrogen atoms and then migrate through the ice in a flipping motion along the crack boundary towards the crack tip.

The CO₂ molecules accumulate at the crack tip and constantly attack the water molecules by trying to bond to them. This leaves broken bonds behind and increases the brittleness of the ice on a macroscopic scale.
