MCT Fats Found In Coconut Oil Boost Brain Function In Only One Dose

MCT Fats Found In Coconut Oil Boost Brain Function In Only One Dose

Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs), the primary type of fat found within coconut oil, have been found to boost cognitive performance in older adults suffering from memory disorders as serious as Alzheimer's -- and not after months or even days of treatment, but after a single 40 ml dose!

A groundbreaking 2004 study published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging found that the administration of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), the primary fat type found in coconut oil, almost immediately improved cognitive function in older adults with memory disorders.

The study involved 20 subjects with Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment who, on separate days, were given either emulsified MCTs or a placebo.  The researchers observed a significant increase in blood plasma levels of the ketone body beta-hydroxylutyrate (beta-OHB) after only 90 minutes of treatment, and depending on the apolipoprotein E genotype of the subject tested, beta-OHB levels either continued to rise or held constant between the 90 and 120 minute blood draws in the treatment condition. Remarkably, cognitive testing revealed that this brief MCT treatment facilitated improved performance on the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-cog) in 4 subjects within the study group. Moreover, "higher ketone values were associated with greater improvement in paragraph recall with MCT treatment relative to placebo across all subjects (P=0.02)."[i]

The details of the study procedure was described as follows:

The study was conducted with a double-blind placebo controlled design with two study visits. During each visit, subjects received one of two isocaloric conditions (690calories) in a randomized order: emulsified MCTs, or emulsified long chain triglycerides as a placebo. NeoBee 895 (Stepan, Inc.) was used for MCTs. To increase palatability, heavy whipping cream was used as a source of long chain triglycerides and as a source of long chain mono- and di-glycerides for emulsification. MCTs (40ml) were blended with 152ml heavy whipping cream to create the emulsified test sample. Heavy whipping cream alone (232ml) was blended to create the placebo.

Subjects fasted from 8:00 p.m. on the night prior to the study visit. They arrived in the morning and blood was drawn to determine plasma β-OHB levels and APOE genotyping (first visit only). Subjects then consumed the test beverage and rested quietly for 90min, after which blood was drawn and a 30-min cognitive testing session ensued. After testing, a final blood draw was taken.

How Medium Chain Triglycerides Work

How could a single dose of MCTs (40 ml or 2.7 tablespoons) cause an almost immediate improvement in cognitive performance in those suffering from cognitive impairments as serious as Alzheimer's disease? The explanation is found both in the unique metabolic needs of the brain and in the configuration of MCTs themselves. Whereas the primary fuel source for the energy-hungry brain is glucose, when insulin resistance and suboptimal metabolism (hypometabolism) develops in the brain, both the brain's structure and function are compromised. Ketone bodies provide a much needed alternative fuel source to glucose that can recharge metabolic processes within the brain, resulting in an almost immediate improvement in cognitive function.

MCTs are not like most fats we consume. For instance, due to their smaller size they do not form micelles and are not stored in adipose tissue. Whereas up to 97% of the dietary fats we ingest are made up of long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) which have been 14 and 18 carbons,[ii] MCTs have relatively shorter chain lengths of 5 to 12 carbons, making them easier to absorb and utilize. They are preferentially oxidized by the liver, and when provided in large enough quantities, they give rise to ketone bodies.[iii]

What is the best way to take MCTs? As we are advocates of whole food nutrition, coconut oil is our preferred source of these triglycerides, containing approximately 2/3rds MCTs by volume. Coconut oil also has a broad spectrum of other health benefits, which we highlighted in our previous article "13 Evidence-Based Medicinal Properties of Coconut Oil."

Also, instead of treating coconut oil or MCTs as some new nutraceutical "magic bullet," almost as if we are just loading natural bullets into the same old outdated allopathic gun, try incorporating it into your diet in a way that displaces less healthy fats. For instance, replace that rancid, pro-inflammatory 'vegetable oil' (e.g. soy, grape seed, peanut, canola oil) you are using to fry an egg or bake with, with sublimely saturated, rancidity-resistant coconut oil.

Or, enjoy a delicious curry with coconut milk as a base. Because 25% of coconut milk is fat, and about 66% of that fat is MCT, you are still getting a healthy dose. It is always better to eat smaller amounts of truly therapeutic foods, enjoyed in the context of sharing, preparing and enjoying good food, so that you will ideally never have to use the heroic "food as medicine" approach after a serious disease has had the opportunity to set in. Think: use food so that medicine never becomes necessary.

Roundup and Birth Defects: Is the Public Being Kept in the Dark?

Roundup and Birth Defects: Is the Public Being Kept in the Dark?

The pesticide industry and EU regulators knew as long ago as the 1980s-1990s that Roundup, the world's best selling herbicide, causes birth defects – but they failed to inform the public.

This report, co-authored by international scientists and researchers, reveals that industry's own studies (including one commissioned by Monsanto) showed as long ago as the 1980s that Roundup's active ingredient glyphosate causes birth defects in laboratory animals.

Questions in the EU Parliament

The following EU parliamentary questions to the European Commission (EC) have been asked about Roundup, some of them about our report:

  • Glyphosate: concern over the delayed glyphosate review, 3 Oct 2011, Question from Sir Graham Watson (ALDE), Answer from the EC
  • Cultivation of genetically-engineered seed and use of Roundup weed killer in EU Member States, 13 Sept 2011, Question from Nikolaos Chountis (GUE/NGL), Answer from the EC
  • Glyphosate: recent and worrying reports, 1 Aug 2011, Question from Linda McAvan (S&D), Answer from the EC
  • Review of glyphosate, 20 July 2011, Question from William (The Earl of) Dartmouth (EFD), Answer from the EC
  • Glyphosate: using Monsanto's research on the substance to inform decisions on its safety for use, 20 July 2011, Question from Timothy Kirkhope (ECR), Answer from the EC
  • Review of glyphosate, 12 July 2011, Question from William (The Earl of) Dartmouth (EFD), Answer from the EC
  • Suppression of information about the side effects of glyphosate in the herbicide 'Roundup', 30 June 2011, Question from Franz Obermayr (NI), Answer from the EC
  • Public kept in the dark on Roundup link with birth defects, 27 June 2011, Question from Michail Tremopoulos (Verts/ALE), Answer from the EC
  • Roundup herbicide spray, 27 June 2011, Question from Andreas Mölzer (NI), Answer from the EC
  • Consequences for the EU of the discovery of a new pathogen in Monsanto's GMO products, 13 March 2011, Question from Kartika Tamara Liotard (GUE/NGL), Answer from the EC
  • Renewal of registration of glyphosate, 10 Feb 2011, Question from Michail Tremopoulos (Verts/ALE), Answer from the EC
  • Error in the Commission's answer to my written question on glyphosate, 15 Dec 10, Question from Michail Tremopoulos (Verts/ALE), Answer from the EC
  • Safety standards regarding widely used pesticide, 1 Oct 2010, Question from Michail Tremopoulos (Verts/ALE), Answer from the EC

The facts are these:

  • Industry has known from its own studies since the 1980s that glyphosate causes malformations in experimental animals at high doses
  • Industry has known since 1993 that these effects also occur at lower and mid doses
  • The German government has known since at least 1998 that glyphosate causes malformations
  • The EU Commission's expert scientific review panel knew in 1999 that glyphosate causes malformations
  • The EU Commission has known since 2002 that glyphosate causes malformations. This was the year it signed off on the current approval of glyphosate.

But this information was not made public. On the contrary, the pesticide industry and Europe's regulators have jointly misled the public with claims that glyphosate is safe. As a result, Roundup is used by home gardeners and local authorities on roadsides, in school grounds, and in other public areas, as well as in farmers' fields.

As recently as 2010, the German Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety, BVL, told the Commission there was "no evidence of teratogenicity" (ability to cause birth defects) for glyphosate.

BVL made this comment in its rebuttal of an independent scientific study by Argentine scientists which showed that Roundup and glyphosate cause birth defects in experimental animals at concentrations much lower than those used in agricultural spraying. The study was prompted by reports of high rates of birth defects and cancers in areas of South America growing genetically modified (GM) Roundup Ready soy, which is engineered to tolerate being sprayed liberally with glyphosate herbicide.

In its rebuttal of the Argentine study, BVL cited as proof of glyphosate's safety the industry studies submitted for the Commission's 2002 approval of glyphosate (the approval that is currently in force in Europe).

But the authors of the new report obtained the approval documents and found that contrary to BVL's claim, industry's own studies, conducted in the 1980s and 1990s, showed that glyphosate/Roundup causes birth defects in experimental animals.

BBC Two - Horizon, 2009-2010, Pill Poppers

Pill Poppers (1hr)

Over a person's lifetime they are likely to be prescribed more than 14,000 pills. Antibiotics, cholesterol lowering tablets, anti-depressants, painkillers, even tablets to extend youth and improve performance in bed. These drugs perform minor miracles day after day, but how much is really known about them?

Drug discovery often owes as much to serendipity as to science, and that means much is learnt about how medicines work, or even what they do, when they're taken. By investigating some of the most popular pills people pop, Horizon asks, how much can they be trusted to do what they are supposed to?

A Self-Made 12-Step Program for Living an Authentic Life. | Rebelle Society

Let us commence with a few wise words from Mr. Timothy Leary:

"Admit it. You aren't like them. You're not even close. You may occasionally dress yourself up as one of them, watch the same mindless television shows as they do, maybe even eat the same fast food sometimes. But it seems that the more you try to fit in, the more you feel like an outsider, watching the "normal people" as they go about their automatic existences.
For every time you say club passwords like "Have a nice day" and "Weather's awful today, eh?", you yearn inside to say forbidden things like "Tell me something that makes you cry" or "What do you think deja vu is for?". Face it, you even want to talk to that girl in the elevator.
But what if that girl in the elevator (and the balding man who walks past your cubicle at work) are thinking the same thing? Who knows what you might learn from taking a chance on conversation with a stranger? Everyone carries a piece of the puzzle. Nobody comes into your life by mere coincidence. Trust your instincts. Do the unexpected. Find the others…"

Scary beginnings, sad endings and all the meaningful stuff in between.

I'm thinking about getting out. I'm antsy and have itchy feet. I'm gonna do it. But it takes time, right? I mean, I can't just up and go, change or do — or can I? Can you? May I?
For me it's not really about getting away or going on some worldly exploration, at least not right now. I just want to go deeper into the experience of an authentic life — right now in these shoes or better yet in bare feet.
So, what's the formula and how I do I put this secret into practice?
I'm up for anything. A new dance step, a more confident voice. I'll even brush my teeth with my less dominant hand while sending sentiments of love to all the lefties of the world. I'm ready to detoxify, love-ify, sanctify, practice, apply and fulfill with a conscientious and diligent attitude — the padawan's ageless steps for living an authentic life.
Are you with me?
(A few more ponders, question marks and little corporate digs: How do we get real, step out of the matrix, the simulation, the computer programming? How do we escape The Truman Show? How can I be sure my values are my own? How do we leave our mundane routines yet still survive? How do we stop Dow, Exxon Mobil, Wal-Mart or The Coca-Cola Company from dictating our lives? By the way, do people still believe that Hershey's is actually chocolate?)

I recognize the loop – I've just been going round and round and round.

I'm sure you've heard someone else's broken record declaration of he said this, she said that, that's the reason why I'm doing this or why I can't do that, but I've realized that the real question is: can you hear your own broken-record-speech?
How do I turn it off? It's hurting my ears!
Once I heard my own quadrupled platinum recorded compilation of what ifs, buts, ands, and incessant blame — that frighteningly keeps on playing even without batteries or electricity — I found that all signs lead back to one place. Yes, it all circles back just like a boomerang to Me.
I've also recognized that this self-depleting album comes with a range of multiple-choice reactions: A) Secret denial B) Find it repulsive and resort to self-depreciating behavior in order to bury it and not admit to it and C) Don't know what to do about it so procrastinate and do nothing — enters: mind-numbing self-medication.
Who's in charge of the life preservers?
The good news is, there's actually an option D) but you have to really, really want it. It is: Figure It Out.

R.I.P. Old Self. You Served a Great Purpose.

As much as I love original recipes, formulas and programs, I often find that along the way, and after much experimentation, failures, tantrums and tears, I have to write my own. I feel that in a way, all of these books, teachers, scholars, gurus and Universal Principles want us to do just that. Through their own sharing of wisdom, experience, and love, they want you to discover your own… dance with me?
So, here are mine. My 12-step program for living an authentic life.
Step #1 – Do You.
Have no apologies for who you are. If you fit in, great. Perhaps you found your tribe. If you don't fit in, don't beat yourself up about it. If you feel like the people around you aren't speaking your language, perhaps it's time to explore new flocks. Be brave and true to who you are — wearing unnecessary masks just to fit in or avoid facing the reality of YOU can make life feel hopeless and imprisoning! Even in a crowd of faces, it's easy to feel lonely if we aren't being ourselves and if the people around us don't appreciate who we are.
Take back your right to be you in front of everyone and in every situation. When you are yourself, you not only invite others to do the same, but you become a bright watch tower for the people you'd wish would find you.
"The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness." ― John Muir
Step #2 – Let Wildness In.
Stepping into the wilderness does wonders to the vibrational energy of our bodies and our nervous systems. There's a subtle reassurance that everything you need to know, you already know and everything you don't know may eventually be revealed in time without struggle and without desperation.
The wilderness strips us of competition and comparison and invites us into a state of peaceful awe. It also offers a reflection of our individual relationship with life versus being just a mere part of the human race. Who are you without people? You may just find this answer in the wild. It's powerful medicine.
"When you get the blanket thing you can relax because everything you could ever want or be you already have and are." – Bernard Jaffe, I Heart Huckabees
Step #3 – Hear the Voices.
Open up to your life's purpose and your heart's deepest desires by listening to the voices inside of you. There's a lot of dialogue going on — some incessant, some nonsensical — but if we learn to listen more sincerely, we'll discover that a deeper, all-knowing conversation is happening. It takes practice to hear this guidance as it takes practice to hear your heart's desire, to trust your gut and to listen to your intuition.
Pay attention to the whisper and the serendipitous moments that remind you of what's important to you. Keep listening and keep following the signs. You have the ability to live a life that's true to who you are and a life that you really want.
Listen like your life depends on it.
"Creativity comes from trust. Trust your instincts." — Rita Mae Brown
Step #4 – Take the damn risk already.
Make choices that put yourself first — above everything and everyone else, even those you love and cherish the most. If you don't take care of yourself, if you don't do what is best for you, your relationships will eventually suffer. Trust in the fact that doing what is best for you is best for everyone even if it doesn't feel like it at first. Sometimes sacrifices have to made. People will get hurt and there will be losses, but the rewards gained from following your heart are absolutely everything in comparison.
Do something difficult for no other reason than that you like to do it.
Photo: Google Images.
Photo: Google Images.
Step #5 – Believe.
The secret formula: Believe in yourself and people will believe in you. Don't give up due to predefined perceptions and limitations of yourself. Don't give up because of the perceived effort. Millions of people give up before they even get started. They fail to realize their potential and give up as soon as they reach the first hurdle. Why? They don't believe in themselves.
If you don't believe in yourself you will end up throwing away your creativity and ideas. On the other hand, if you believe in yourself, you will no matter the outcome, find success even in what you perceive as the greatest of losses.
"And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." — Anais Nin
Step #6 – Use your body and love who and what you are.
It's never been about the symmetry of your face or your body. It's about the light that shines from within.
Have you ever witnessed a person that has been in a tragic, body deforming accident who has come out stronger, more compassionate and yes, even more beautiful? Their light shines so bright that after just a few minutes, you don't see their asymmetry anymore, you simply feel and connect with their light.
If you see yourself as mere looks, if you believe your worth is merely skin deep, others will see you and judge you the same. Aren't you more than that? Remember, no matter what you do, your looks will eventually fade. What will remain is the fire that burns within. Stop smothering it with delusional judgements and superficial shape chasing. Stop holding yourself back from life because you don't believe you look good enough.
Self-love exercise: go look in the mirror and tell yourself: You never ever were more beautiful than you are right now. Believe it.
Use your body in every way that you know how. Allow the intelligence of your vessel to reveal and share with you the secrets of the Universe — the secrets of You.
Step #7 – Defy your genetics.
Evolve from the base point you've been born into. Don't allow the limitations of your parents or their parents deter you from your path. See it all as potential to evolve your bloodline, your genetic makeup, your life to a place where neither you, nor your ancestors, have ever gone before. YOU hold the torch.
If you are the black sheep of the family, be grateful. The path can be lonely, but know that you broke free. Celebrate this freedom.
You are the architect of your existence.
Step #8 – Integrate into wholeness.
Accept all parts of your life. All parts. This is one of the deepest healing elixirs you can ever offer yourself. Allow it all to integrate — your mind with body, your body with spirit and your entire being with all of the experiences of your life. Accept your irrevocable wholeness. When you accept what has been, what you thought was and what is, you loosen your grip on delusions, limitations and stale beliefs that hold you back. What's left? Space. Space and room to expand into the shape you are naturally, wholly and fully with a deeper sense of truth, wisdom and compassion.

Step #9 – Paint a spectrum of love for all.
Serve and be accepting of others — of what they want to create, what they want to be and what they envision. Remind them to do everything it takes not to fail. Remind them that the bad that comes along with the good is the journey and the most beautiful, most fulfilling experience anyone could ever have. Offer and support a new way of living, thinking, creating, even working — listen and be open to the ways of others.
Have conversations that make you smile and ponder. Offer solutions that bring us closer together versus farther apart.
Step #10 – Take the time to do nothing.
Clear the slate. Erase the chalkboard. Wash it all clean. Don't do anything. Just let everything be as it is. No matter how it is, no matter what your mind is screaming or what confusion you have in your life, for a few moments or as long as you can each day, let it be. Doing nothing and sitting still, helps us recognize all the ways in which we don't let go. Explore the profound, beautiful simplicity and subtlety of doing nothing… and all the challenges it endures.
In the most simple instruction from Andrew Cohen: take a seat, be still and don't do anything.
In the words of The Beatles: Let it be.

Step #11 – Seek connection versus perfection.
Living an authentic life stems from your ability to be self-aware and genuine in the ways in which you express, react, dance, share, create, listen, etc. — in other words, how you connect with yourself and the world around you. Authenticity also heightens from your ability to be aware of when you are being and/or reacting inauthentically.
Being authentic develops a connection with who you truly are, your real essence, and liberates you from the superficial pressures and expectations of always trying to be perfect.
Step #12 – Recognize that you already have everything you need to be you.
Clear away the small minded and limiting ideas of who you are that keep you bound and feeling small, hopeless, even unworthy. You already have everything — everything you need to be you. In the present moment, you have very clear goals. There is much to be done as you are right now.
Discover the clearing, discover the openness and the deepest part of your own Universe. Tap into your unlimited energy and passion to follow-through.

The Money Masters ~ Full Movie - YouTube

http://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=related&v=HfpO-WBz_mw

"The powers of financial capitalism had a far-reaching plan, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole...Their secret is that they have annexed from governments, monarchies, and republics the power to create the world's money..." THE MONEY MASTERS is a 3 1/2 hour non-fiction, historical documentary that traces the origins of the political power structure that rules our nation and the world today. The modern political power structure has its roots in the hidden manipulation and accumulation of gold and other forms of money. The development of fractional reserve banking practices in the 17th century brought to a cunning sophistication the secret techniques initially used by goldsmiths fraudulently to accumulate wealth. With the formation of the privately-owned Bank of England in 1694, the yoke of economic slavery to a privately-owned "central" bank was first forced upon the backs of an entire nation, not removed but only made heavier with the passing of the three centuries to our day. Nation after nation, including America, has fallen prey to this cabal of international central bankers. Segments: The Problem; The Money Changers; Roman Empire; The Goldsmiths of Medieval England; Tally Sticks; The Bank of England; The Rise of the Rothschilds; The American Revolution; The Bank of North America; The Constitutional Convention; First Bank of the U.S.; Napoleon's Rise to Power; Death of the First Bank of the U.S. / War of 1812; Waterloo; Second Bank of the U.S.; Andrew Jackson; Fort Knox; World Central Bank"

US Navy, Coast Guard Prep for Ice-Free Arctic : Discovery News

US Navy, Coast Guard Prep for Ice-Free Arctic

The question of the Arctic Ocean becoming seasonally ice-free as a result of climate change is no longer one of "if" but "when." And while environmentalists and scientists may bemoan the consequences for polar bears, ringed seals or weather patterns, many governments see opportunity.

One opportunity is shortened transit times for cargo vessels, particularly from Atlantic to Pacific (and vice versa) via the Northern Sea Route across the top of Russia, and to a lesser extent via the fabled Northwest Passage through Canada's Arctic archipelago. A recent study concluded that the Northern Sea Route could become completely navigable for part of the year by mid-century at latest.

10 Signs Climate Change Is Already Happening

As a result, noted Alaska's Democratic Senator Mark Begich last week, even decidedly non-Arctic nations are among those putting regionally-appropriate infrastructure in place.

"Russia, China and even India are building icebreakers," he said to the audience at a Symposium on the Impacts of an Ice-Diminishing Arctic on Naval and Maritime Operations in Washington, D.C. "India!" he repeated for emphasis.

(As Begich pointed out, his own appeals for new U.S. icebreaking capability are frequently met with responses along the lines of "I thought the ice was melting; why do we need icebreakers?" But the ironic reality is that, as ice breaks up and becomes mobile each spring, and as pathways become available, ice-capable vessels will be more of a necessity than when thick multi-year ice was essentially impenetrable year-round.)

Already, there is an increase in maritime traffic in the region. In 2010, for example, the administrators of the Northern Sea Route granted permission for four vessels to transit the icy seaway. Last year, that total had risen to 46. So far in 2013, the figure is 204.

Of particular interest to the United States is the fact that virtually all such traffic will, at the beginning or end of its journey, transit through the Bering Strait, the 60-mile-wide funnel of water and ice between Alaska and Siberia. The safety and environmental issues that raises ensure, said Begich, that "the United States Coast Guard will be a key player in the Arctic."

Despite the federal government being in a period of fiscal belt-tightening, Begich emphasized that "we can't do what the federal government likes to do, and shift resources. This is going to require additional resources," to provide, for example, greater ice-breaking and command-and-control abilities in the Alaskan Arctic.

That point was underlined by Vice Admiral Peter Neffenger, U.S. Coast Guard Deputy Commandant for Operations, who told reporters at the symposium that the changing Arctic "is like the world has opened up a new subdivision, but the infrastructure isn't in place yet."

Key to being able to predict and respond to changes in human activities in the Arctic Ocean, added Rear Admiral Jonathan White, Oceanographer of the U.S. Navy, is that "We need to understand the Arctic Ocean as well as other oceans. And we don't."

The rate of change, however, while swift, is not so rapid as to engender a panicked response, added White: "For the Navy, an ice-diminishing Arctic presents a challenge, not a crisis. If the Navy is going to operate in the Arctic, what is it going to take? What are the modest investments we can make? What kind of vessels are we going to need? What kind of fueling operations?"

Neffenger added that that approach was the same one that the Coast Guard followed with the development and publications of its new Arctic Strategy.

"We wanted to get away from, 'Buy us an icebreaker.' In the near term, we have what we need to figure out what the next steps are going to be," he said. But, he added, there was no doubt that those next steps were coming, and that they would need to take place soon to respond to a rapidly changing region.

"From our perspective, the Arctic has always been a place you could go," he said. "Now it's a place where you have to go, from a maritime governance perspective. For us, this is not an abstract academic discussion."

You Are Only 10% Human | John Douillard's LifeSpa

You Are Only 10% Human

In the near future, instead of antibiotics your doctor might present you with a vial of a specific strain of good bacteria which you are lacking that directly targets your particular health concern. In the meantime, generally repopulating a healthy environment of benevolent bugs in your system is an important start.

New research has genetically mapped the trillions of cells in the human body. It turns out that 90% of the cells in the human body are microbial (bugs), leaving only 10% of us that consists of human cells! Good thing our human cells are so much bigger than bug cells, or we would all look more like bugs!

With this in mind, instead of killing the bad bugs – which is the logic behind antibiotics – future medicine will focus on re-populating the beneficial bacteria, or good bugs, that have diminished in your body.

After all, doesn't it make sense to treat the 90% of us – the bugs – so that they clearly and effortlessly maintain the health of the remaining 10%?

The trick is: how do we keep the trillions of beneficial microbes in the body alive and flourishing?

Casualties of the War on Bacteria

After years of anti-bacterial assault and our war on bacteria, many of the 10,000 possible strains of good bugs that can proliferate in the body simply do not exist anymore.

In a recent article, I talked about Sister Noella in Connecticut who made raw cheese in an ancient wooded barrel – a process that relies heavily on the activity of good bugs. When she added E. coli to her cheese to see what would happen, the good bacteria rallied and effectively wiped out the E. coli.

That is exactly what is supposed to happen in the gut. The gut – or intestinal tract – is where experts believe 80% of the body's immunity lies. Thus, a good crop of diverse and healthy microbes in the gut is responsible for much, if not all, of our health and wellbeing.

Is Our Sterile Lifestyle Wiping Out the 90%?

What is even more interesting is that these microbes replicate extremely quickly. Some can reproduce up to 1 million times in eight hours. So in a typical work day, they have a million babies, giving them the leverage to genetically morph and adapt to our ever changing world.

But as prolific as they are, researchers are finding that they do not proliferate well in the presence of toxins, chemicals and processed and preserved foods.

If we continue to sterilize everything and eat foods that our good bugs can't digest, the 90% of us will slowly die. And as the microbial diversity within us slowing wanes, so will our health.

Feed Bugs Real Food

Bugs don't like processed foods. For example, a modern store-bought loaf of bread can sit on your counter for 2-3 weeks and not go bad, while homemade bread would go bad in a day if left out. "Going bad" means that it would be attacked by bacteria that are responsible for rotting food. If a food takes forever to go bad, it means that, for some reason, bacteria are unwilling or unable to break it down. If the bugs – the 90% of you – won't eat that bread, then should you?

Think about all the foods in your cupboard and fridge that hang out for months without going bad. This is an unnatural phenomenon,

and your bugs just have no idea how to digest all that preserved and processed food.

Microbial diversity as the key to optimal health and longevity may be one of the most exciting theories in medicine to surface in decades. While researchers openly admit they know very little about the microbes of the human body, it is very clear that they are supporting our health and wellbeing, rather than us supporting them. We need them.

Start 'em Young on the Good Bugs

In one study, researchers found that being exposed to healthy gut bacteria early in life offered measurable immune support later in life in the areas of (1):

• Blood sugar
• Digestive health
• Hypersensitivities
• Healthy breathing
• Joint health
• Nervous system function
• Skin health

Bugs for Blood Sugar Support

One study done way back in 1951 isolated a fungus called Aspergillus orzyae, also called Koji mold, in Japanese sake and rice wine vinegar. It turns out that this fungus manufactures an enzyme called transglucosidase that breaks down starches into a form of oligosaccharides that other microbes ingest.

So why is that important? If not broken down, the oligosaccharides that feed the gut's microbes would otherwise remain as starches and sugar that would hit the bloodstream hard and raise blood sugar levels. Thus, studies show that transglucosidase helps to support healthy blood sugar levels and healthy weight management (2). Sake anyone?

Bugs for Your Bones

In another 2013 study published in the Journal of Cellular Physiology, researchers set out to prove the connection between digestion, the good bugs in the gut, and bone health. For years, researchers have been stumped trying to understand why bone health is an issue in the west but not in developing countries. Now, researchers have identified a bacteria called Lactobacillus reuteri that is indigenous to the human gut and supports healthy bone density. Lack of these bacteria in the gut might cause problems.

These instances and many others strongly suggest that the future of medicine may be finding the missing strain of bacteria and administering that as a way to employ a natural immune response that is way more sophisticated than we ever imagined.

The Probiotic Craze – Pros and Cons

Considering all of the above, the logical thing to do is to run out and buy some probiotics, right?

What has always disturbed me regarding probiotics is that they are transient and generally do not adhere to the gut wall. While they may have a therapeutic effect while you are taking them, if they don't adhere to the gut wall and help your own good bacteria to proliferate, what you have is a sort of band-aid effect.

Because of this, for years I discouraged my patients from taking them, focusing instead on supporting a healthy intestinal environment needed to proliferate healthy microbes.

Meanwhile, I have been waiting to see some research demonstrating that a given probiotic will actually adhere to the gut wall. This means the microbe must be able to make it through the stomach acid, the liver's bile secretions and the pancreatic enzymes without being destroyed. Then it has to literally adhere to the gut wall, indicating that it has found a home.

Promising Probiotic Strains

One microbe that does this was discovered in 1899 and is called Bifidobacterium lactis HN019, or just HN019 for short. In one study, the HN019 microbe was shown to adhere to the gut wall and be able to survive the transit through the human gastrointestinal tract (3).

My favorite study on the HN019 microbe showed that introducing it resulted in a significant increase in populations of other good gut bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, when tested on elderly folks over 60 (4).

This backs what researchers for the Human Microbiome Project are saying: that these bugs have an incredibly complex symbiotic relationship. Their level of symbiotic intelligence allows them to know how to feed off each other in a certain way in order to proliferate the microbes that are needed at a certain time for a certain reason. It is a level of intelligence that we simply cannot comprehend as of yet.

There is another probiotic that has also been shown to be able to safely transit the gastrointestinal tract and adhere to the gut wall. It is called Lactobacillus plantarum and is commonly found in fermented foods like sauerkraut and fermented olives (4). Lactobacillis plantarum is missing in many westerners diets and has been shown to support immune function.

What You Can Do for Your Bugs

Make it a priority to add small amounts of fermented or cultured foods to your diet regularly. A little bit on a regular basis goes a long way.

When searching out a probiotic, look for a formula that contains the strains Bifidobacterium lactis HN019 and/or Lactobacillus planetarum.

These are exciting times with regard to optimal health and longevity strategies. Understanding how to repopulate the microbiome of the human body will be at the forefront for years to come.
