The obituaries this year included Mom's civic accomplishments...Go Mom!

The Day

We will miss them

I lost a wonderful friend in 2015, and so it is hard, as it is for so many others who experienced loss in the last year, not to remember those who sadly won't start a new one with us today.
My friend Clare Peckham, The Day's retired librarian, was celebrated in November during a grand Saturday afternoon tea party thrown by her children. It was a great way for her to say goodbye, entertaining her many friends once again.
Funerals, memorial services, and, of course, obituaries, are all ways to mark our loss, to help us move on.
I find In Memoriam newspaper tributes especially heartbreaking, a signal that sometimes it's impossible to let go.
I can't imagine the power of the loss still haunting the widower who placed two In Memoriams in The Day in 2015, in memory of his late wife, who died at 83, two years ago. One, using his term of endearment for her, appeared on their anniversary, "the most treasured day of my life."
I spent a little of the end of 2015 reviewing some of the lives lost this year, as they were remembered on The Day's obituary pages, often some of the most interesting and informative in the newspaper.
These included pillars of the community, those whose names were often in the newspaper long before they died. And there were many remembered for their more private lives, hard to summarize in a few short paragraphs.
Sometimes it is some small achievement or event that lingers to help define a life.
Juliet Cafaro of Groton, for instance, was remembered in her obituary for her service as a young girl, helping to unveil the statue of Christopher Columbus in New London, during a celebration and parade in 1928.
There was Ronald A. Jackson, once of East Haddam, who was remembered for his work on the design team for the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette. Irene Catherine Anderson of Waterford, who lived to be 97, was remembered for singing soprano in the choir of the Ledyard Congregational Church.
Helen Nasiatka of Mystic was remembered as a woman ahead of her time, founding, in 1967, Helene's Healthport, offering natural and healthy hair and skin treatments. No doubt her early emphasis on natural and organic foods and treatments, before they became fashionable, led to her long life. She died in December at the age of 97.
How great was it that the family of Esther R. Cain, who died at home in Waterford, at 90, recalled that "Essie," known for her laugh and "award-winning smile,"  danced her way through life. In her obituary picture she is wearing a bejeweled tiara.
We lost a lot of veterans in 2015.
It's hard to single any one out, but I was struck by the line in the obituary for Lawrence Lacerte of Groton, which said he enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17, serving in both World War II and the Korean War. John Umrysz enlisted at the age of 20, after Pearl Harbor was bombed. He also served in two wars.
Umrysz was probably more well known here, though, for his Yetter Road Christmas Tree Farm in Groton, which he first planted in 1962.
David H. Padgett Sr., who died at home in Groton, at 75, was a retired master chief torpedoman, whose 30-year Navy career included sea tours aboard eight different submarines.
The obituaries this year were full of long lists of civic accomplishments. One of the longest lists was in the obituary for Anita "Ann" Den Tex of Mystic, who for four years served as president of the Visiting Nurse Association of Stonington and for three years as board chairwoman of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Connecticut.
It took a lot of ink to print the very long list of civic and charitable accomplishments of Shirley Alloway of New London. Some of my favorite statistics in her obituary included the 80 elections at which she served as a poll worker and the more than 1,000 couples she married as a justice of the peace.
She is pictured for her obituary as a young woman, wearing her Navy uniform, as she served as a WAVE.
New London last year lost former two-time mayor Carmelina Kanzler, who was 93.
Another prominent woman from New London politics and civic life also died in 2015. Dorothy Leib, an ophthalmologist on the medical staff at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, was the Republican Town Chairman and served several terms on the City Council.
The region is rich with experienced sailors and one who died in 2015 was Larry Jacobsen of Mystic, who built his first boat at the age of 6. He served in the Navy in World War II and went on to design ships as a naval architect for Electric Boat.
For a retirement marine encore, he volunteered in ship restoration at Mystic Seaport.
For all of us who may think from time to time we have obstacles to overcome, remember the life of Arthur W. "Rolling Thunder" Ihloff Sr., who was paralyzed in a car accident at the age of 24 and spent the next 55 years of his life confined to a wheelchair.
Ihloff, a member of the Mohegan Indian tribe, was lead usher in the tribe's vast casino arena before being elected to the Elder Council.
Despite his handicap, he loved sports, skied Mount Snow and went white water rafting and parasailing.
Another of our World War II veterans who died last year was 93-year-old Robert F. Radway of New London, who served for many years as general manager of Radway Dairy, founded by his parents. He also played the trumpet for the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, taught his kids to sail aboard his small sailboat and kept his Piper Pacer plane at the former Waterford Airport, for aerial excursions.
I can't help but think Radway's death in December might have been related to the April death of his college sweetheart, Virgina C. Radway, 91, who had a distinguished career as an academic librarian.
This list is by no means complete.
We will miss them all, as 2015 has turned to 2016.
This is the opinion of David Collins

weather 2025

Executive Summary
In 2025, US aerospace forces can "own the weather" by capitalizing on emerging technologies and focusing development of those technologies to war-fighting applications. Such a capability offers the war fighter tools to shape the battlespace in ways never before possible. It provides opportunities to impact operations across the full spectrum of conflict and is pertinent to all possible futures. The purpose of this paper is to outline a strategy for the use of a future weather-modification system to achieve military objectives rather than to provide a detailed technical road map.
A high-risk, high-reward endeavor, weather-modification offers a dilemma not unlike the splitting of the atom. While some segments of society will always be reluctant to examine controversial issues such as weather-modification, the tremendous military capabilities that could result from this field are ignored at our own peril. From enhancing friendly operations or disrupting those of the enemy via small-scale tailoring of natural weather patterns to complete dominance of global communications and counterspace control, weather-modification offers the war fighter a wide-range of possible options to defeat or coerce an adversary. Some of the potential capabilities a weather-modification system could provide to a war-fighting commander in chief (CINC) are listed in table 1.
Technology advancements in five major areas are necessary for an integrated weather-modification capability: (1) advanced nonlinear modeling techniques, (2) computational capability, (3) information gathering and transmission, (4) a global sensor array, and (5) weather intervention techniques. Some intervention tools exist today and others may be developed and refined in the future.
Table 1 – Operational Capabilities Matrix
DEGRADE ENEMY FORCES ENHANCE FRIENDLY FORCES
Precipitation Enhancement Precipitation Avoidance
– Flood Lines of Communication – Maintain/Improve LOC
– Reduce PGM/Recce Effectiveness – Maintain Visibility
– Decrease Comfort Level/Morale – Maintain Comfort Level/Morale
Storm Enhancement Storm Modification
– Deny Operations – Choose Battlespace Environment
Precipitation Denial Space Weather
– Deny Fresh Water – Improve Communication Reliability
— Induce Drought – Intercept Enemy Transmissions
Space Weather – Revitalize Space Assets
– Disrupt Communications/Radar Fog and Cloud Generation
– Disable/Destroy Space Assets – Increase Concealment
Fog and Cloud Removal Fog and Cloud Removal
– Deny Concealment – Maintain Airfield Operations
– Increase Vulnerability to PGM/Recce – Enhance PGM Effectiveness
Detect Hostile Weather Activities Defend against Enemy Capabilities
Current technologies that will mature over the next 30 years will offer anyone who has the necessary resources the ability to modify weather patterns and their corresponding effects, at least on the local scale. Current demographic, economic, and environmental trends will create global stresses that provide the impetus necessary for many countries or groups to turn this weather-modification ability into a capability.
In the United States, weather-modification will likely become a part of national security policy with both domestic and international applications. Our government will pursue such a policy, depending on its interests, at various levels. These levels could include unilateral actions, participation in a security framework such as NATO, membership in an international organization such as the UN, or participation in a coalition. Assuming that in 2025 our national security strategy includes weather-modification, its use in our national military strategy will naturally follow. Besides the significant benefits an operational capability would provide, another motivation to pursue weather-modification is to deter and counter potential adversaries.
In this paper we show that appropriate application of weather-modification can provide battlespace dominance to a degree never before imagined. In the future, such operations will enhance air and space superiority and provide new options for battlespace shaping and battlespace awareness.1 "The technology is there, waiting for us to pull it all together;"2 in 2025 we can "Own the Weather."

This brings a definitive close to a 2 year long odyssey of discovery, and investigation, but raises SEVERAL new questions which need answers.

The process of discovery was a long arduous road, lined with skeptics AND deniers.  A path leading down many rabbit holes, and across many intriguing disciplines.

Spending long hours of study on Radio Frequency theory, Plasma Physics, Micro-physics, Meteorology, weather modification (geoengineering), Electromagnetism, Geometry, Seismology, and even some planetary physics / astronomy…. All the studying, and hypothesizing, has turned out to be well worth the effort.

Vindication comes from a Scientist in Switzerland, Dr. Slobodan Tepic, who performed the appropriate experiments to prove microwaves are capable of producing convection using a ground based station pulsing into the atmosphere.

US Navy Labs create Plasma Spheres (rings) using HAARP

http://www.nrl.navy.mil/media/news-releases/2013/nrl-scientists-produce-densest-artificial-ionospheric-plasma-clouds-using-haarp

http://sincedutch.wordpress.com/2013/02/27/2272013-us-navy-labs-create-plasma-rings-using-haarp-hf-radar-frequency/

U.S. Naval Research Laboratory research physicists and engineers from the Plasma Physics Division, working at the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) transmitter facility, Gakona, Alaska, successfully produced a sustained high density plasma cloud in Earth's upper atmosphere.

"Previous artificial plasma density clouds have lifetimes of only ten minutes or less," said Paul Bernhardt, Ph.D., NRL Space Use and Plasma Section. "This higher density plasma 'ball' was sustained over one hour by the HAARP transmissions and was extinguished only after termination of the HAARP radio beam."

Sequence of images of the glow plasma discharge produced with transmissions at the third electron gyro harmonic using the HAARP HF transmitter, Gakona, Alaska. The third harmonic artificial glow plasma clouds were obtained with HAARP using transmissions at 4.34 megahertz (MHz). The resonant frequency yielded green line (557.7 nanometer emission) with HF on November 12, 2012, between the times of 02:26:15 to 02:26:45 GMT.

(Photo: SRI International—Elizabeth Kendall)

These glow discharges in the upper atmosphere were generated as a part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) sponsored Basic Research on Ionospheric Characteristics and Effects (BRIOCHE) campaign to explore ionospheric phenomena and its impact on communications and space weather.

Using the 3.6-megawatt high-frequency (HF) HAARP transmitter, the plasma clouds, or balls of plasma, are being studied for use as artificial mirrors at altitudes 50 kilometers below the natural ionosphere and are to be used for reflection of HF radar and communications signals.

Past attempts to produce electron density enhancements have yielded densities of 4 x 105 electrons per cubic centimeter (cm3) using HF radio transmissions near the second, third, and fourth harmonics of the electron cyclotron frequency. This frequency near 1.44 MHz is the rate that electrons gyrate around the Earth's magnetic field.

The NRL group succeeded in producing artificial plasma clouds with densities exceeding 9 x 105 electrons cm3 using HAARP transmission at the sixth harmonic of the electron cyclotron frequency.Optical images of the artificial plasma balls show that they are turbulent with dynamically changing density structures.

Electrostatic waves generated by the HAARP radio transmissions are thought to be responsible for accelerating electrons to high enough energy to produce the glow discharge in the neutral atmosphere approaching altitudes of nearly 170 kilometers.

The artificial plasma clouds are detected with HF radio soundings and backscatter, ultrahigh frequency (UHF) radar backscatter, and optical imaging systems. Ground measurements of stimulated electromagnetic emissions provide evidence of the strength and frequency for the electrostatic waves that accelerated ambient electrons to ionizing velocities.

Figure 6 Image

The NRL team is working with collaborators at SRI International, University of Alaska Fairbanks, University of Florida, and BAE Systems on this project to synthesize the observations with parametric interactions theory to develop a comprehensive theory of the plasma cloud generation.

The next HAARP campaign, scheduled for early 2013, will include experiments to develop denser, more stable ionization clouds.

_____________

In comparison to the Goldstone 1975 NASA experiment – 2.45GHz @ 500,000watts – modern day NEXRAD Weather RADAR (used by NWS/NOAA) operates in the 2-3GHz spectrum @ 750,000watts.

This means , just like the 1975 NASA experiment, our current NEXRAD weather RADARs can transmit power (intentionally or unintentionally) to a distant location.

Ionization technology creates over 50 rain storms in the desert :

Dunes in the Empty Quarter, 1,000 mile area of dunes and desert, not crossed until 20th century, Arabian Peninsula, Sultanate of

For centuries people living in the Middle East have dreamed of turning the sandy desert into land fit for growing crops with fresh water on tap.  Now, that holy grail is a step closer after scientists employed by the ruler of Abu Dhabi claim to have generated a series of downpours.

Fifty rainstorms were created last year in the state's eastern Al Ain region using technology designed to control the weather.   Most of the storms were at the height of the summer in July and August when there is  no rain at all.

People living in Abu Dhabi were baffled by the rainfall which sometimes turned into hail and included gales and lightening.

HOW TECHNOLOGY IS KICKING UP A STORM

The Metro System scientists used ionisers to produce negatively charged particles called electrons.  They have a natural tendency to attach to tiny specks of dust which are ever-present in the atmosphere in the desert-regions.  These are then carried up from the emitters by convection – upward currents of air generated by the heat release from sunlight as it hits the ground.

Once the dust particles reach the right height for cloud formation, the charges will attract water molecules floating in the air which then start to condense around them.  If there is sufficient moisture in the air, it induces billions of droplets to form which finally means cloud and rain.

The scientists have been working secretly for United Arab Emirates president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. They have been using giant ionisers, shaped like stripped down lampshades on steel poles, to generate fields of negatively charged particles.  These promote cloud formation and researchers hoped they could then produce rain.
