Michelangelo couldn't afford ultramarine. His painting The Entombment, the story goes, was left unfinished as the result of his failure to procure the prized pigment. Rafael reserved ultramarine for his final coat, preferring for his base layers a common azurite; Vermeer was less parsimonious in his application and proceeded to mire his family in debt. Ultramarine: the quality of the shade is embodied in its name. This is the superlative blue, the end-all blue, the blue to which all other hues quietly aspire. The name means "beyond the sea"—a dreamy ode to its distant origins, as romantic as it is imprecise.

Derived from the lapis lazuli stone, the pigment was considered more precious than gold. For centuries, the lone source of ultramarine was an arid strip of mountains in northern Afghanistan. The process of extraction involved grinding the stone into a fine powder, infusing the deposits with melted wax, oils, and pine resin, and then kneading the product in a dilute lye solution. Because of its prohibitive costs, the color was traditionally restricted to the raiment of Christ or the Virgin Mary. European painters depended on wealthy patrons to underwrite their purchase. Less scrupulous craftsmen were known to swap ultramarine for smalt or indigo and pocket the difference; if they were caught, the swindle left their reputation in ruin.

BREAKTHROUGH: FLYING HOVERBIKES TAKES TO THE SKIES. VIDEO INSIDE!

June 12, 2015 - Aeroflex's flying bike, called Hoverbike and nicknamed Flike, has made its first successful manned flight in Hungary. Though Hoverbike's top speed is 30 mph, maximum flying height is 15 feet and it sustains flight for about 30-40 minutes; it uses anti-gravity technology, emits zero emissions and does not crash.

A team of flight enthusiasts at the Hungarian research institute, Bay Zoltan Nonprofit Ltd, designed and developed the all-electric cycle, a personal tricopter, in just six months. Flike's creators write on their website:

"Flike is equipped with Lithium Polymer batteries, allowing for around 15-20 minutes of hover flight, which extends towards 30-40 minutes in cruise. The lift is provided by six fixed-pitch carbon composite rotors, directly driven by individual electric disc motors, resulting in the highest possible efficiency, and zero-emission by design. Due to its layout, Flike is fully controllable by solely adjusting the rotation speed of individual rotors. Its airborne behaviour is comparable to any helicopter: it can hover, roll, bank, drift, spin, yaw, climb, turn, sidle, dive… just as well as it is also capable of various things yet to be named. Flight stability, lateral position and altitude are taken care of by its full-authority flight management computer; therefore flying Flike is as easy as riding a bicycle."

During the first flight test in March, Flike could carry a weight of 210 kg and stayed in the air for several seconds. In April, the bike underwent another test where it supported a larger weight of 240kg and maintained a longer flight time.

The goal behind the experimental 3D-printing project is the eventual creation of an automatic construction site. According to Jan van de Ven, Heijmans' Manager of Business Development, an automatic construction site would not only be dependable and fully managed, but would also be environmentally friendly because of its energy-efficiency processes and minimization of construction waste. The use of 3D printing for construction purposes also has benefits in the design sector and, once popularized, can revolutionize the way we approach the design/build process.

"Construction and design are currently rather separate factors in construction – the architect designs something and the constructor interprets the design and builds what he thinks is needed," says Jurre van der Ven, Heijmans' Innovation Manager. "But using 3D printing for a bridge makes design and construction operate hand-in-hand. For instance, both activities are done at the same time, instead of first building the structure and then adding the design later. This means we will also have to start looking at design in a completely different manner."

The location of the bridge has not yet been determined but will be announced soon. The pedestrian bridge will span one of Amsterdam's old canals and has been described by designer Joris Laarman as a "fantastic metaphor for connecting the technology of the future with the city's historic past, in a way which would reveal the best aspects of both worlds." A visitor center will open in September 2015 and serve as an educational public space that will track the progress of the project.

In 2006, a patent was granted to a man named Paul Stamets. Though Paul is the world's leading mycologist, his patent has received very little attention and exposure. Why is that? Stated by executives in the pesticide industry, this patent represents "the most disruptive technology we have ever witnessed." And when the executives say disruptive, they are referring to it being disruptive to the chemical pesticides industry.

What has Paul discovered? The mycologist has figured out how to use mother nature's own creations to keep insects from destroying crops. It's what is being called SMART pesticides. These pesticides provide safe & nearly permanent solution for controlling over 200,000 species of insects - and all thanks to the 'magic' of mushrooms.

Paul does this by taking entomopathogenic Fungi (fungi that destroys insects) and morphs it so it does not produce spores. In turn, this actually attracts the insects who then eat and turn into fungi from the inside out!

This patent has potential to revolutionize the way humans grow crops - if it can be allowed to reach mass exposure. To tolerate the use of pesticides in modern agriculture is to deny evidence proving its detrimental effects against the environment. Such ignorance really can no longer be tolerated. For example, can you imagine a world without bees? Monsanto's chemical concoctions which are being sprayed all over farmers' fields around the world are attributed to the large-scale bee die off. While a growing number of countries are banning Monsanto, it's still being used in in nations who should be aware of its dangers. To say that new methods need to be implemented before it is too late is an understatement.

Monsanto presently generates $16 billion dollars per year (as reported in 2014), therefore you can be certain they do not want anything interrupting that flow of revenue. Such income gives them nearly limitless resources and abilities to suppress information that may be damaging their reputation.

But by becoming educated on the benefits of growing sustainable, organic, and bio-dynamic food, sharing articles like this, and boycotting GMO & herbicide-sprayed crops, the corporate demon may soon get the message.

Downsizing To Make Our Lives Bigger

Our house is sold, and we've bought another.

In the next few weeks I will pack, sort, store and toss 24 years of living. Fortunately I've always been good at purging, so much of the work has been done already.

But still.

There are baby toys that I've saved for my children's (future) children. There are boxes of precious, handwritten letters and birthday cards. There are thousands of photographs, many of them scanned to my computer or saved on a disc -- but how can I possibly throw away those original prints, faded and curling at the edges? Those photos are my history.

There's my wedding dress, carefully packed away almost 26 years ago. I will say goodbye to it.

There are delicate, fragile things, glass figurines and tiny boxes, gossamer-like linen napkins, that came to me from my grandmother when she died. There are too many pieces of costume jewelry, most of which I never wear. There are hundreds of novels, loved and with me for decades. There are dozens of cookbooks -- and I rarely cook anymore. There are 20 years of handwritten, color-coded calendars for my family, until my son went away to college. There are mixing bowls, cookie sheets galore, an abundance of Pyrex baking dishes, 13" x 9". There are two sets of stainless flatware, 12 place settings each. There are two sets of everyday dishes, one set of fine China, two sets of 12 place settings of sterling silver flatware, dozens of cloth napkins and at least 10 tablecloths.

We did a lot of entertaining over the past 24 years.

We are selling our formal dining room set, so the tablecloths have to go, along with most of the napkins. The problem is, no one wants a formal dining room anymore. But we are hopeful someone will take it home and celebrate Thanksgiving, Passover and more seated around it like we did for so many years.

We are selling a lot of things. Chairs and lamps and a big leather ottoman where we put our feet up at night while we watch TV. Bookshelves and crystal bowls, throw pillows and antique sconces, lovely and delicate and far too formal for our new home near the beach.

Our kitchen table and chairs where we ate thousands of meals with our children when they were growing up -- it has to go, because the chairs are uncomfortable and the wood is too dark for the new house. I imagine that table holds all the words we ever said to each other, mingled with Lemon Pledge and spilled spaghetti sauce.

We are unloading and brightening. The colors will be lighter, our possessions fewer, our home smaller. But even as we are lightening up, we are expanding our lives -- a new place, a new lifestyle, a new point of view. By downsizing we are increasing everything -- except square footage and stuff.

I am not feeling sad -- yet. The excitement and busyness of buying a new home and all that goes with it are keeping me from thinking about the fact that this house will, in just a few short weeks, no longer be our home. My children, all grown up, are having a harder time than I am. When we took my son to see the house and asked what he thought he said, "It's a great house, but it's not home."

And it will never be our home in the same way, for my husband and me. In our new home we will be on our own in a way we haven't ever been -- our children raised, the future about us. We'll create a new normal, with new memories of midlife. My husband will sit on the front porch and wave at the neighbors as they walk by, our dog Lambeau next to him. I will join him, sometimes. But not always.

Instead of getting in our car every time we want to go somewhere or do something, we can walk a few blocks and there are restaurants, boutiques, friends. Why this makes me so happy I'm not sure, but it does.

A half a block and across the street the other way is the ocean. That makes me happy too.

We will let so much go in the next few weeks -- sold or stored or recycled or donated -- but we are making room for so much new. And we need new. Because even at midlife, there's the desire for change, for different, for excitement, for challenge. Those are the things that keep us on our toes, keep us feeling energized and hopeful and alive.
