It has been proven that highly creative people's brains work quite differently than other brains. That special brain wiring that can create such wonderful art, music, and writing can often lead to strain in a relationship, because of those differences. If you've ever loved a highly creative person, you know that it can seem like they live in their own little word at times, and that thought isn't far from the truth. Here are some things to keep in mind when you are in love with a highly creative person:

1. Their Minds Don't Slow Down

The highly creative mind is one that is running at full speed all the time. Although it can be a source of crazy, spontaneous fun – it can also be a burden. Highly creative people rarely keep normal sleep cycles, and are often prone to bouncing from one task to another throughout the day. It can be exhausting to try to keep up.

2. They are Cyclical

The flow of creativity is a cycle, full of highs and lows. Some people may consider this "manic" behavior, but in reality, it is just how the creative process works. Keep this in mind as your partner goes through these natural ebbs and flows. The low periods aren't permanent.

3. They Need Time Alone

Creative minds need air to breathe. Whether it is their own little work space or an escape to somewhere quiet, they need a time and place to be alone with their thoughts. Being creative can be a serious internal struggle. Motivation, enthusiasm, direction, and drive can all be issues for creative people. Some days it is hard for them just to get out of bed, and other days you can't get them to slow down. Be patient in the lulls, because there is usually a burst of activity right around the corner.

Why crude oil prices keep falling and falling, in one simple chart

For the last two years, global crude oil prices have been in free-fall, and no one seems to know when the bungee cord will catch. In June 2014, you had to plunk down $110 to purchase a barrel of Brent crude. By early 2015, that had dropped to $60.

Today, it costs just $30 to buy a barrel of oil — a level not seen since 2004. It's a breathtaking decline.

I've written a longer history of the rise and fall of oil prices, but the crucial dynamic can be seen in the chart below, from the International Energy Agency's Oil Market Report. Since mid-2014, the world has been producing far more oil than anyone needs. Supply remains much higher than demand, with the excess getting stored for later, and that situation is expected to last for much of 2016. So prices have crashed:

A short history of the rise (and fall) of oil prices

This wasn't always the case. Between 2010 and 2014, as you can see above, oil demand was soaring around the world, as countries recovered from the financial crisis, but global production was struggling to keep up. Many older oil fields were stagnating. Conflicts in places like Libya and Iraq were restricting supply. Countries had to draw down their stockpiles, and prices soared to around $100 per barrel.

Those high prices, however, spurred more and more drillers in the United States to use innovative hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling techniques to unlock vast quantities of oil from shale formations in places like North Dakota and Texas. It's hard to overstate the impact of the fracking boom: US crude oil production has nearly doubled since 2010.

Eventually, supply caught up with demand — and then surpassed it. That's when the crash came.

By mid-2014, global demand was starting to slow down. Europe was still reeling from the eurozone mess. China's economy was starting to stumble. But the United States was still producing more and more oil. Iraq and Libya were also starting to bring back more production. So prices began sliding.

At that point, many people expected Saudi Arabia and other oil producers in OPEC to cut back on their own production to prop up prices, as they have in the past. (Conventional wisdom had held that Saudi Arabia needed $100 per barrel oil to balance its budget.)

Surprisingly, that didn't happen. Saudi Arabia decided to increase production in order to maintain market share, hoping that the subsequent fall in oil prices would crush US frackers, who require higher prices to stay profitable.

And that's when things got really interesting.

Ever since Saudi Arabia's decision to maintain output in late 2014, prices have kept tumbling and tumbling — largely because supply has stayed resilient and demand has been weaker than expected.

US drillers turned out to be far more adaptable to low oil prices than the Saudis thought — companies cut costs and boosted productivity in order to keep the oil flowing. (US production has stopped growing lately, but the decline has been far less severe than originally predicted.) Iraq has nearly doubled production since 2014 as it recovers from conflict. Thanks to the nuclear deal with the US, Iran is expected to start exporting more oil soon, further adding to the supply glut.

And in the meantime, major developing countries like China and Brazil have been mired in a slump, putting a damper on oil consumption. That's the basic dynamic. As long as supply far outstrips demand, oil prices will stay relatively low.

Those low prices are having all sorts of ripple effects around the world. Drivers in places like the United States, Europe, Japan, and elsewhere are suddenly paying way less for gasoline, which means they have more money to spend on other things. (Arguably, low prices have helped juice the US economy.) Oil producers like Saudi Arabia and Russia, meanwhile, are struggling to balance their budgets and seeing a major revenue hit. Oil companies themselves are watching profits evaporate. SUVs are coming back in style. And so on.

So when will oil prices rise again?

No one knows for sure. Or, if they do, they're laying bets in the financial markets rather than writing articles about it. Jad Mouawad of the New York Times recently took a look at various forecasts: Some banks project oil prices to keep plummeting down to $20 per barrel this year. Others expect a rebound to around $50 or $60 per barrel by year's end as the US shale boom tapers off and demand recovers.

Ultimately, the supply and demand dynamic is the thing to keep an eye on. And expectations matter a lot here. Whenever new data shows an unexpected boost in oil production or an unexpected drop in oil demand, prices tend to go down. Conversely, a surprise drop in supply or a surprise surge in demand will push prices back up.

So if, say, the cold war between Saudi Arabia and Iran heats up and somehow leads to disruptions that crimp production, prices could rise. (So far, that hasn't happened.) If low prices are harder for the US shale industry to handle than anyone thought, that could cause prices to rise even higher. If China's economy suddenly rebounds unexpectedly, that could have a similar effect. Or maybe Iran will do something that causes EU and US oil sanctions to snap back into place. Alternatively, perhaps the supply glut — and hence low prices — will persist indefinitely. It's a guessing game, and there are lots of plausible guesses.

USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine. The vessel was the first submarine to complete a submerged transit of the North Pole on 3 August 1958. Sharing names with Captain Nemo's fictional submarine in Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and named after another USS Nautilus (SS-168) that served with distinction in World War II, Nautilus was authorized in 1951 and launched in 1954. Because her nuclear propulsion allowed her to remain submerged far longer than diesel-electric submarines, she broke many records in her first years of operation, and traveled to locations previously beyond the limits of submarines. In operation, she revealed a number of limitations in her design and construction. This information was used to improve subsequent submarines.

Nautilus was decommissioned in 1980 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1982. The submarine has been preserved as a submarine museum in Groton, Connecticut, where the vessel receives some 250,000 visitors a year.

Haroutune Krikor Daghlian, Jr., (May 4, 1921 – September 15, 1945) was a physicist with the Manhattan Project, the effort to create atomic bombs during World War II. He accidentally irradiated himself on August 21, 1945, during a critical mass experiment at the remote Omega Site facility at the Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico, resulting in his death 25 days later.

Daghlian was irradiated as a result of a criticality accident that occurred when he accidentally dropped a tungsten carbide brick onto a 6.2 kg plutonium-gallium alloy bomb core. This core, subsequently nicknamed the "demon core", was also involved in the death of another physicist, Louis Slotin, in an accident the following year, before it was used in the Operation Crossroads series of nuclear weapon tests.

The 17 Commandments of Rowing - My Journey From Hate To Happiness

rowing, indoor rowing, concept 2, c2 rowing, josh crosbyYears ago when I first started training in CrossFit, I hated rowing. In actuality I just didn't know how to do it correctly, so I was horribly inefficient and therefore unhappy with both my experience of rowing and my performance.

After a couple years of whining I decided it was high time to get over myself and learn how to row. I started training with Josh Crosby in his indoor rowing classes and everything changed. I learned the technique inside and out, my conditioning went through the roof, and I was having a lot of fun. I actually, dare I say, fell in love with rowing.

For those of you still in the hate phase of your love-hate relationship with rowing, here is what I call The 17 Commandments of Rowing. Really, this is a list of tips that, if you follow, will have you be a more efficient, less injured, and happier rower.

The 17 Commandments of Rowing

1. Don't grip too hard – Don't hold on so hard to the handle. Keep enough grip to not lose the handle, but also not so much that you wear out your hands, have achy forearms, and tear up your palms.

2. Drive with your legs – Rowing is mostly about your legs. Despite your natural instincts, your legs are far stronger than your arms and should be doing the vast majority of the work. Your quads and booty should be toasted after a hard rowing workout.

3. Imagine you're doing a clean – If you don't know how to perform this lift properly, don't imagine this. Imagining doing a clean won't help in that case.

4. Legs, hips, arms, arms, hips, legs – This is the sequence of rowing. If you reorganize this list, it doesn't work.

5. Drive straight back – If you feel yourself lift off the seat, or tragically, you pop off the seat and land on the rail, it is because you are pushing UP instead of back. Push straight back.

6. Don't let your butt go solo – Don't shoot your butt back first. Keep your core engaged throughout the stroke; the angle of your back should not change as you drive with your legs. Said another way, the handle should travel in sync with your seat for the initial leg drive portion of the stroke.

7. Don't pull with your arms – Keep your elbows straight as you drive your legs. It's about your legs, not your arms. As soon as your arms bend, you've lost the ability to translate power from your legs.

8. Keep your elbows relaxed – Don't lift up your elbows at your sides. Don't artificially tuck them in, either. Keep them relaxed at a natural angle and don't make chicken wings.

9. Don't shrug your shoulders up – Don't pull your shoulders UP into your ears as you drive back in the stroke. Instead, imagine you are pulling your shoulder blades together behind you.

10. Pull the handle to the bottom of your ribs – For the ladies, you want to pull the handle to the bottom of your sports bra. For the men, pretend you're wearing a sports bra.

11. Sit up tall at all times – Hinge at the hips and keep good posture, like a good morning or a deadlift. Lift your chest up. Don't let your lower back or shoulders collapse. Be relaxed, but with good posture.

12. Imagine your upper body like a pendulum – Okay, maybe an upside down pendulum. More like a needle ticking back and forth between 11:00 and 1:00 on a clock face. At the "catch" or beginning of the stroke, right before you drive back, you should be leaned forward at the 1:00 position. At the "finish" or far end of the stroke, when your legs are fully extended, you should lean back to the 11:00 position.

13. Feel the connection through your feet – The whole way through the drive you should feel a solid connection between the balls of your feet and the footplates.

14. Don't re-bend your knees too soon – As you start to return forward in your stroke, your knees need to remain straight until the handle is above your mid-shin. Hinge at the hips, sit up tall, and wait (just like with a deadlift) until the bar has passed your knees to re-bend them.

15. Don't slam the seat into your heels – As you continue to move forward and return to the start of the stroke, you should stop when your shins are perpendicular to the ground and your heels are curled up off the footplates, but your seat should never run into your feet.

16. Breathe properly – Exhale as you drive back; inhale as you recover forward.

17. Focus on consistent steady movement – You are the master of the numbers on the computer screen, not the victim of them. Steady consistent movement will be more efficient. Remember you are on the "water" – smooth movement is rewarded. Smooth movement is fast and efficient. Jerky movements make waves and flip boats.

The truth is, when you increase your proficiency and technique at rowing; when you pump up the music, close your eyes, and drive off hard, imagining your boat lifting up out of the water, and that the air from the fan is the ocean breeze; when you imagine yourself in sync with a boatful of unstoppable forces, and you are the master of the moment…well, when that happens, rowing is pretty awesome. Hopefully these tips help YOU find that moment.

'Zombie' Bacteria Resistant To ALL Drugs Shows Up In Denmark

'ZOMBIE' BACTERIA RESISTANT TO ALL DRUGS SHOWS UP IN DENMARK

Bacteria resistant to ALL antibiotics have arrived in Europe, and experts fear it could be the start of a global epidemic of untreatable infections.

Last month, we reported on a gene mutation called MCR-1 that had shown up in bacteria in China. The mutation is resistant to all antibiotics, including colistin, a last-resort drug used to tackle tough bacteria when all other antibiotics have failed.

The superbugs were found in 15% of raw meat samples in China, as well as a fifth of the animals tested. Colistin had also failed in 16 patients infected with drug-resistant infections.

Now a patient in Denmark has been diagnosed with an untreatable form of salmonella, scientists from George Washington University (GWU) and the Statens Serum Institute (SSI) and National Food Institute (NFI) in Denmark announced Friday. In addition, they also found untreatable bacteria in 5 samples of chicken imported from China through Germany.

The Antibiotic Resistance Action Center in the Milken Institute School of Public Health at GWU, said in a statement to National Geographic:

"The news that the dangerous colistin resistance gene has been found in Denmark is alarming. This newly identified gene, called MCR-1, is on a mobile piece of DNA that can make copies of itself and then jump to from bacterium to bacterium, spreading resistance. History shows that these mobile resistance genes can spread around the world quickly, silently riding in people, animals, and food. The news that MCR-1 has been discovered in Denmark suggests that this scenario is playing out in real time."

The Danish researchers said that when they learned of the new resistance factor, they immediately took a look at the stored genomes they held at their institutions to look for it:

"The approximately 3,000 Gram-negative (E. coli or Salmonella) bacteria, which have previously been mapped using whole genome sequencing, have been reexamined to see whether MCR-1 is present. Results show that MCR-1 was found in one patient, who suffered from a blood infection in 2015 and in five food samples that have been imported from 2012-2014. All the bacteria are multi-resistant ESBL bacteria containing the MCR-1 gene, which can further complicate treatment."

The Chinese researchers who discovered the untreatable pathogens warned that it could spread globally, but experts are shocked at how quickly they're making their way around the globe, saying the situation is extremely serious.

And bacteria affected by the MCR-1 gene are especially frightening because they can be transferred to other types of bacteria, which means they could spread quickly between animals and humans.

Professor Frank Møller Aarestrup, a microbiologist at the Technical University of Denmark, said today: "This is a very alarming discovery.

Aarestrup said he wouldn't be surprised if the powerful bugs had already migrated to the U.K. Scientists in New Zealand said the same.

Colistin is widely used in farming, particularly in China, where farmers feed it to pigs and chickens en masse to fatten them up. In the U.S., approximately 70% of antibiotics considered vitally important to human health are used in farm animals.

Drug resistance hasn't become enough of a problem in the U.S. to start using colistin, but it's only a matter of time until it's needed. And then, surely, it will only be a matter of time until colistin stops working for Americans.

The GWU ended its statement by saying this:

"We must act swiftly to contain the spread of colistin-resistant bacteria, or we will face increasing numbers of untreatable infections. Leaders from every nation should immediately implement a ban on the use of colistin in animal agriculture. While China appears to be the biggest user of the drug, it is approved for use in the European Union and many other countries. It also is approved for use in food animals in the U.S., but drug companies holding those approvals are not actively marketing the drugs. Drug companies with these approvals should immediately withdraw these label claims to ensure that colistin is never used in U.S. animal agriculture, otherwise our livestock production facilities could become breeding grounds for untreatable superbugs ( via myscienceacademy.org ).

In addition, we need to remember why colistin is the last drug available for treating these dangerous infections. We turned to it because the preferred drug class – carbapenems – became powerless against some superbugs due to overuse. Carbapenems are still effective against many bacteria, but for how long? While carbapenems are not approved for use in animal agriculture in many parts of the world, their use is not explicitly banned. World leaders should call for an immediate ban on carbapenems to protect them for future generations."

As we talked about last week, the beginning of a new year is the perfect time to learn a new skill. Motivation tends to be high, and it's nice to distract yourself from the realization that the holidays are officially an entire year away.

While now is a great time to start learning more about the various 3D modeling software programs out there, we know it can feel like too much information to start with. However, one of the best ways to start learning is to…just start modeling!

Luckily for beginners, 3D printing is now accessible to everyone through easy-to-use 3D modeling tools and creator apps. If you are just beginning and haven't started playing around with any 3D software, try using an image you already love or a drawing you've created and convert it to a 3D model using 2D to 3D. Using an app like this is a great way to learn some of the basics of 3D printing, before really diving into the specifics.

In this post, you'll learn:

Let's get started!

Pick an image:

There are a couple of images you can upload to 2D to 3D. If you want to create a doodle-style design, draw it yourself on white paper or a white dry erase board. You can also use an image that has already been created, including fonts, shapes, patterns, "pop art" inspired original photos and more. For best results you'll want to use a simple black and white drawing. Either way, make sure your image follows the following criteria:

  • Simple black and white: The black portions will "pop" and be thickened into your 3D product, while the white represents empty space
  • Cropped to the edges: The viewer measures the width of the image you upload, not the design itself, so make sure to crop your image before uploading

Here's an example of a drawing that won't work. Notice how the letters aren't connected? If you tried to upload this version, you would receive your part in pieces as opposed to one solid product:

Another one that will be hard to make work because the grey pencil does not stand out enough against the white background:

(Note: It is possible to make pencil work, but you'll need to make sure you press firmly and don't have any gaps in your design.)

Upload your design:

Once you've picked your image, you're ready to upload! To start, go to Shapeways.com and click "Make" in the top navigation bar. You'll see "Easy Creator Apps" in the drop down menu – click into it and then find 2D to 3D under "Easy 3D Model Editors."

When you're in the app, click "Choose File."

You'll quickly see your image come up on the viewer and you'll be able to play around with the thickness and width of the product.

As you change the thickness and width of your design, be sure to hit "Update View" so that you can preview your final product. When you're happy with the design, hit the "Buy Now" button to go to your Model page.

Scale your design and pick your material:

To scale your design, click "Scale"

Put in your desired measurements when the new box pops up. Scaling your design will impact the size of your design, as well as the cost depending on the material you choose.

At this point, you'll also learn which materials your product can be printed in. The entire Shapeways material portfolio will be listed, and each will be indicated if it can be printed or not.

With 54 materials to choose from, it can be a little overwhelming to decide what you want your product to be printed in. If you want to test your product and get a basic idea of what your design will look like in 3D, we'd suggest sticking with our White Strong & Flexible Plastic. For something a little more fun, choose any one of our dyed plastics or even Metallic Plastic.

If you're planning on creating a pendant or other type of jewelry, we have plenty of metals to choose from. Try Steel, Plated Brass or even Gold! For this design, we chose to go with Polished Brass.
