From the U-2 Dragon Lady and A-12 Oxcart, to the SR-71 Blackbird and D-12 Ramjet Drone, there's been no shortage of exotic aircraft (and UFO sightings) in the skies over Nevada's Area 51. But among the most extreme examples of bleeding-edge avionic design tested was the otherworldly Boeing Bird of Prey.
One of the most intriguing products of the Phantom Works that really was a denizen of Area 51 on George Muellner's watch was the Bird of Prey. Visually, this aircraft possessed the strange, but sleek design characteristics that are appreciated by those in the world of extraterrestrial buffs. It was even named after an alien spaceship. According to James Wallace, writing in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer of October 18, 2002, it is named for a class of Klingon starships first seen in the 1984 motion picture Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
The Bird of Prey project began at the Phantom Works in 1992, and the aircraft made its first flight eight months earlier than the X-36 on September 11, 1996. Unlike the publicly acknowledged NASA X-36, the Bird of Prey was a classified program, funded by the contractor but apparently managed by the US Air Force. Like Tacit Blue, it was successfully obscured from public view until its flight test program concluded in April 1999 after forty successful flights.
The Bird of Prey program, like many of the projects that have come out of the Phantom Works, utilized rapid prototyping techniques to cut both costs and development time. According to the company, the program "pioneered breakthrough low-observable technologies and revolutionized aircraft design, development and production." The Bird of Prey was also one of the first aircraft programs to "initiate the use of large, single-piece composite structures; low-cost, disposable tooling; and 3D virtual reality design and assembly processes to ensure the aircraft was affordable to build as well as high-performing."
The aircraft was not, however, one to push the edge of the performance envelope. The Bird of Prey had a reported cruising speed of 300 mph and a modest service ceiling of 20,000 feet. The aircraft was 47 feet long and had a wingspan of about 23 feet. It weighed about 7,400 pounds and was powered by an off-the-shelf Pratt & Whitney JT15D-5C turbofan engine.
The man who is considered to have been the "father of the Bird of Prey" was Alan Wiechman, the director of signature design and applications for the Phantom Works whose career in LO design had begun at the Lockheed Skunk Works where he worked on Have Blue and the F-117 program, as well as the Sea Shadow, Lockheed's stealth warship.
In April 2002, six months before the Bird of Prey was officially declassified, Wiechman received the 2001 Technical Achievement Award from the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) for his work in LO aircraft design. The
NDIA called him "a giant whose work to date has given the United States a legacy of improved survivability and influenced an entire generation of combat vehicles," adding that "because of Wiechman's work, the United States gained a 15-year lead over potential adversaries that it has not relinquished, and the effectiveness of his designs and products has been thoroughly proven in combat operations."
On October 18, 2002, the Bird of Prey was made public. According to Boeing, the reason was that "the technologies and capabilities developed [in the program] have become industry standards, and it is no longer necessary to conceal the aircraft's existence."
Jim Albaugh, president of Boeing Integrated Defense Systems, proudly bragged that with the Bird of Prey, the Phantom Works "changed the rules on how to design and build an aircraft."
George Muellner, a man with two decades of experience in black world airplanes and now an executive with Integrated Defense Systems, added that the Bird of Prey program "is one of many that we are using to define the future of aerospace."
The fact that Boeing itself funded the project to the tune of $67 million hints that "the future of aerospace" involves secrets more intriguing than the Bird of Prey that have been in the sky over Area 51 since before 2002.
They may be revealed tomorrow, or they may remain mysteries indefinitely.

Along with an alphabet soup of medical jargon and mnemonics — from CPR and EKGs, to ABGs, OPQRST, PMH, HTN, T-bili, BUN, and the ASIS — healthcare providers have invented creative slang terms for drug combinations they use commonly in the hospital or the clinic.
I informally polled a few of my medical and pharmacy colleagues. Here are some of our favorites:
- Mirtazipine plus venlafaxine, a powerful combination that boosts serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine levels to combat treatment-resistant depression.
- A hodge-podge of topical anesthetics, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatories to swish around in your mouth if have mucositis. That's soreness and inflammation of the mucosa (soggy tissue) that lines your mouth and esophagus, which is highly sensitive to the DNA damage caused by chemo and radiation therapy.
- Important vitamins and minerals, including folic acid, thiamine, and magnesium, mixed into a bag of IV fluids, giving it a yellow appearance. Doctors use Banana Bags in the hospital and emergency room to correct nutritional deficiencies and electrolyte imbalances in alcoholic patients and others who are extremely malnourished–and therefore at risk of a particular kind of psychosis and brain damage. It's also known as a good cure for the common hangover.
- A sip of thick liquid, including antacid and topical anesthetic, that alleviates indigestion. Interestingly, emergency room doctors used to prescribe the GI cocktail to rule out a heart attack, as symptoms of indigestion can be similar in nature and location. Don't worry, it's not your heart — just indigestion. Until reports came in of patients who felt 100% better after a GI cocktail and were released, but turned out to have real angina and full-on heart attacks. Doctors still use it to treat indigestion, just not to make a diagnosis.
- With possibly the biggest impact on patients' lives, the Triple Cocktail is the combination of drugs that attack HIV from multiple angles, halting viral replication and making HIV-positive individuals effectively non-infectious (when taken consistently as prescribed). Some companies now manufacture combination pills, making the "cocktail" term somewhat anachronistic.
SHANGHAI — The China Poly Group Corporation, a state-run conglomerate that got its start selling weapons to the People's Liberation Army, has over the past few decades successfully branched into developing real estate, selling sports cars and producing television sitcoms. Now the company's huge arts and culture division — Poly Culture Group Corporation — is planning an initial public stock offering that could raise up to $330 million and bolster the prospects of the company in the world's biggest and fastest-growing art and auction market.
By filing this week to sell shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Poly Culture hopes to become an international brand. It already manages dozens of Chinese cinemas, theaters and performance halls, and it competes with the world's largest auction houses, Christie's and Sotheby's, in art sales.
"We are very big in the art auction market in mainland China but still have a long way to go to become the biggest auction house worldwide," the company's chief executive, Jiang Yingchun, said at a news conference last week, according to Chinese news media.
Beijing Poly International Auction, a division of Poly Culture, is already the world's third largest auction house, with about $1 billion in reported sales in 2012.
Christie's and Sotheby's were, until recently, restricted from doing business in mainland China and operated mostly from Hong Kong. Now, Christie's operates independently in China, and Sotheby's has a joint-venture partner here. Still, both can deal only in watches, wine, jewelry and contemporary art, not the more lucrative markets of cultural relics, calligraphy and ancient works.
The initial public offering for a division of Poly is a sign of China's transformation into a market economy, and the government's eagerness to develop its cultural organizations to protect and promote Chinese culture at home and abroad. Several other divisions of Poly are already publicly listed, including Poly Real Estate Group. According to the new filing, the Beijing-based Poly Group, which has longstanding ties to the military and the family of the former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, will retain 67 percent of Poly Culture's shares.
In the prospectus filed last week, investors were cautioned about the potential risks of investing in Poly Culture, which was formed around 2000.
It, for example, has suffered, as other Chinese auction houses have, from a problem that has plagued the nation's art market: buyers who bid up prices but then fail to pay for the items after the auction. According to the prospectus, settlement rates on its auctions have declined in recent years. "Although we actively review the outstanding fees and liaise with relevant parties to speed up the collection process," the company wrote, "there is no assurance we could settle all the amounts from relevant buyers in due course, or at all."
Also, last year the United States imposed sanctions on Poly Technologies, a defense equipment division that American authorities accused of violating the nonproliferation policy that controls weapons traffic with Iran, Syria and North Korea. (The Chinese government has opposed the sanctions and insisted they be lifted.)

Your next step is to get your stress under control.
Start by looking at the people and events that cause the most stress for you.

We have all experienced that appalling sense of having far too much work to do and too little time to do it in. We can choose to ignore this, and work unreasonably long hours to stay on top of our workload. The alternative is to work more intelligently, by focusing on the things that are important for job success and reducing the time we spend on low priority tasks.
Job Analysis is the first step in doing this, and it's a key technique for managing job overload – an important source of stress.
To do an excellent job, you need to understand fully what is expected of you. While this may seem obvious, in the hurly-burly of a new, fast-moving, high-pressure role, it is oftentimes something that is easy to overlook.
By understanding the priorities in your job, and what constitutes success within it, you can focus on these activities and minimize work on other tasks as much as possible. This helps you get the greatest return from the work you do, and keep your workload under control.
Job Analysis is a useful technique for getting a firm grip on what really is important in your job so that you are able to perform excellently. It helps you to cut through clutter and distraction to get to the heart of what you need to do.
Note that this tool takes two forms – the short-form we discuss here assumes that your organization is already well organized and that its job descriptions, review criteria and incentives are well-aligned and correct. The long-form (discussed within our Stress Management Masterclass), helps you to deal with jobs where this is not the case – here, inconsistent job design can cause enormous stress.
To conduct a job analysis, go through the following steps:
Your job exists for a reason – this will ultimately be determined by the strategy of the organizational unit you work for. This strategy is often expressed in a mission statement. In some way, what you do should help the organization achieve its mission (if it does not, you have to ask yourself how secure the job is!). Make sure you understand and perform well the tasks that contribute to the strategy.
Similarly, every organization has its own culture – its own, historically developed values, rights and wrongs, and things that it considers to be important. If you are new to an organization, talk through with established, respected members of staff to understand these values.
Make sure that you understand this culture. Make sure that your actions reinforce the company's culture, or at least do not go against it. Looked at through the lens of culture, will the company value what you do?
Check that your priorities are consistent with this mission statement and the company culture.
Inside or outside the organization, there may be people in a similar role to you who are seen as highly successful. Find out how they work, and what they do to generate this success. Look at what they do, and learn from them. Understand what skills make them successful, and learn those skills.
The next step is to check that you have the staff support, resources and training needed to do an excellent job. If you do not, start work on obtaining them.
By this stage, you should have a thorough understanding of what your job entails, and what your key objectives are. You should also have a good idea of the resources that you need, and any additional training you may need to do the best you can.
This is the time to talk the job through with your boss, and confirm that you share an understanding of what constitutes good performance in the role.
It is also worth talking through serious inconsistencies, and agreeing how these can be managed.
You should now know what you have to do to be successful in your job. You should have a good idea of the most important things that you have to do, and also the least important.
Where you can drop the less-important tasks, do so. Where you can de-prioritize them, do so.
Where you need more resource or training to do your job, negotiate for this.
Remember to be a little sensitive in the way you do this: Good teamwork often means helping other people out with jobs that do not benefit you. However, do not let people take advantage of you: Be assertive in explaining that you have your own work to do. If you cannot drop tasks, delegate them or negotiate longer time scales.

Reproductive technologies that marry DNA from three individuals will receive a trial in the court of public opinion this week. Such technologies may hold promise for averting certain genetically inherited diseases passed down via mutations to mitochondria, the cell's battery pack.
Scientists have already had successes with this type of reproductive approach in monkeys and in human embryos, and are now eager to launch human clinical trials. First, however, they must get the green light from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which will convene a public hearing before an advisory committee on February 25.
The technology, called oocyte modification (but sometimes nicknamed "three-parent IVF"), involves scooping out potentially mutated mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from a woman's egg and replacing it with the mtDNA of an unaffected donor woman. The process is designed to prevent the transmission of some debilitating inherited mitochondrial diseases, which can result in vision loss, seizures and other maladies. Such inherited diseases, often unfortunately known by acronyms for complex medical names that include LHON, for Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy, along with MELAS, MERRF and NARP, occur in about one in every 5,000 live births and are incurable.
Once the mtDNA has been swapped out, the egg could be fertilized in the lab by the father's sperm and the embryo would be implanted back into mom where pregnancy would proceed. The resulting child would be the genetic offspring of the intended mother but would carry healthy mitochondrial genes from the donor.
Although the mitochondrial genome is quite small, the genes themselves are avid reproducers, so that an individual cell contains hundreds or thousands of copies of its DNA. The mutation rate of mtDNA is much higher than that of nuclear DNA and such miscodes can cause severe damage to any part of the body.
Scientists already have evidence for the promise of this type of oocyte modification. Shoukhrat Mitalipov of the Oregon Health & Science University and his colleagues created human embryos in this way, although they did not implant those embryos to make babies. Their findings were published in October 2012 in Nature. Other work from that same team also found that in monkeys the process could lead to the birth of healthy offspring that remained free of complications into adulthood. A human clinical trial would be the next frontier, and Mitalipov says he has already proposed conducting one to the FDA, although its details remain confidential. At a two-day hearing starting today the FDA advisory committee will broadly discuss the state of oocyte modification science and what clinical trials should look like for procedures designed to modify human eggs.
But wading into this type of approach is also fraught with ethical issues. Marcy Darnovsky, executive director of the Center for Genetics and Society, fears that this reproductive approach could soon lead to tampering with other traits, such as intelligence or sports ability. "Life is full of slippery slopes and we need brakes," she says. "This is described as saving lives but it is not aimed at people who are sick," she adds. The FDA advisory committee does not plan to consider ethical issues at this meeting. Instead it will focus on the scientific aspects of future clinical trial considerations, including long-term risk of carryover of abnormal mtDNA, the potential benefits and harm to mothers and future children, and the need for multigenerational follow-up in any trials (because female children could pass on mitochondrial disease to future offspring). "Our job will be purely to air the issue and bring it out into the open," says Evan Snyder, chair of the committee and director of the Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology Program at Sanford–Burnham Medical Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif. "We're not going to come out at the end of the meeting and say we are advocating for clinical trials or any particular technique. This is educational," he says.
Without oocyte manipulation, the main current approach to try to circumvent mutations involves a process called preimplantation genetic diagnosis, which hinges on closely examining embryo cells early on. But it can be a poor predictor of mtDNA mutations. "The problem is the mutation load in one cell is not predictive of what is in the other cells," Mitalipov says. Although one cell could look relatively mutation free, the others may still have higher mutation loads because the mutation was not eliminated and the cells are often not uniform.
The U.K. is also grappling with these questions as they consider how to proceed with therapeutic applications of oocyte modification. Its Parliament is expected to take up the question this year. The London-based Nuffield Council on Bioethics did consider the ethical ramifications of this approach and concluded that if it proved safe and effective, and as long as proper information and support were offered, it would be ethical for families to use these techniques as treatment to block transmission of inherited mitochondrial disease.
Meanwhile researchers are also interested in exploring how—or if—oocyte modification approaches could help some women overcome infertility issues. There is no current scientific consensus regarding whether the quality and quantity of mtDNA impacts fertility, but some researchers wonder if a strong link exists between the two. The theory is that perhaps accumulation of mutations throughout a woman's lifetime could contribute to the age-related fertility decline. "I don't think it's conclusive that this is mitochondria at work and not something else. I think the science has some way to go to make the link between fertility and mitochondrial function," says Dieter Egli, a senior research fellow at the New York Stem Cell Foundation, adding it would need to be tried in mice or monkeys before moving into human trials.
When it comes to the more established research for oocyte modification and genetic inheritance, "We're focusing on if the field is ready for clinical trials to alleviate this real horrible human suffering," Snyder says.
