The idea of mind control has been portrayed in the media for some time, although controlling the human brain to the extent often portrayed in the media has until recently proven impossible.

What is the US patent 6506148 B2 all about?

A report has come to light however which suggests that not only is it now possible, but that entire bodily functions can be controlled as U.S patent 6506148 B2 and the related research paper "Nervous system manipulation by electromagnetic fields from monitors" have discovered.

The brief of the paper states:

"Physiological effects have been observed in a human subject in response to stimulation of the skin with weak electromagnetic fields that are pulsed with certain frequencies near ½ Hz or 2.4 Hz, such as to excite a sensory resonance.

Many computer monitors and TV tubes, when displaying pulsed images, emit pulsed electromagnetic fields of sufficient amplitudes to cause such excitation. It is, therefore, possible to manipulate the nervous system of a subject by pulsing images displayed on a nearby computer monitor or TV set.

For the latter, the image pulsing may be imbedded in the program material, or it may be overlaid by modulating a video stream, either as an RF signal or as a video signal. The image displayed on a computer monitor may be pulsed effectively by a simple computer program. For certain monitors, pulsed electromagnetic fields capable of exciting sensory resonances in nearby subjects may be generated even as the displayed images are pulsed with subliminal intensity."

To put that into less scientific terms basically, any bodily system can be affected and manipulated through the use of magnetic fields emitted by monitors.

If this is as effective as the report suggests then there are almost certainly numerous agencies and governments around the world who will have been working on developing this into a means of controlling and affecting people remotely to further their own agendas.

The recent WikiLeaks vault 7 in revealed that the CIA had been using smart TVs to spy on people and that more worryingly numerous other groups had the capacity to do exactly the same. It wouldn't be a huge leap to imagine that they had also developed the capacity to remotely control people through their televisions as well as spy on them.

One thing is for certain if the agencies and governments of the world have adopted this technology for their own use they are almost certainly already using it. On a small scale, this could be useful to them to control dissidents or terrorists, or even track down and neutralize dangerous criminals. Taken too far however and the general populace could be turned into mindless drones blindly accepting whatever the government tells them to and that is a scary thought.

During the cold war, both the Soviets and the United States conducted a lot of research into mind control, much of which later came to light through the declassification of less successful experiments and the like. Similarly, the Nazis researched mind control as well as numerous other horrific avenues of science best forgotten. None of these experiments seemed to produce any significant results at least ones that came to light, and the projects were forgotten.

Full mind control was until recently dismissed as an impossibility with current levels of technology. Lesser ways of controlling the minds of individuals have been well documented, however, although not the same degree is as often shown in film and TV. Certain drugs can make people more suggestible for example, although at a greatly reduced intellectual capacity than they normally operate. Similarly, the idea of voodoo zombies often relies on the victim or zombie being in an altered state of mind due to a combination of poison and possibly brain damage leaving them open to following simple commands.

More commonly experienced are the ideas of thought conditioning, which things such as propaganda would be an example of. Advertisement networks have also tried a variety of methods to condition the way people think in order to sell their products over the years with varying degrees of success. Subliminal messaging, for example, was at one point widely used, as were techniques known as framing and agenda setting.

It is well known that a high salt diet leads to high blood pressure, a risk factor for an array of health problems, including heart disease and stroke. But over the last decade, studies across human populations have reported the association between salt intake and stroke irrespective of high blood pressure and risk of heart disease, suggesting a missing link between salt intake and brain health.

Interestingly, there is a growing body of work showing that there is communication between the gut and brain, now commonly dubbed the gut–brain axis. The disruption of the gut–brain axis contributes to a diverse range of diseases, including Parkinson's disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Consequently, the developing field of gut–brain axis research is rapidly growing and evolving. Five years ago, a couple of studies showed that high salt intake leads to profound immune changes in the gut, resulting in increased vulnerability of the brain to autoimmunity—when the immune system attacks its own healthy cells and tissues by mistake, suggesting that perhaps the gut can communicate with the brain via immune signaling.

Now, new research shows another connection: immune signals sent from the gut can compromise the brain's blood vessels, leading to deteriorated brain heath and cognitive impairment. Surprisingly, the research unveils a previously undescribed gut–brain connection mediated by the immune system and indicates that excessive salt might negatively impact brain health in humans through impairing the brain's blood vessels regardless of its effect on blood pressure.

This research proposes new therapeutic targets for countering stroke—the second leading cause of death worldwide—and cognitive dysfunction. Reducing salt intake is applicable to people around the globe, as nearly every adult consumes too much salt: on average 9–12 grams per day or around twice the recommended maximum level of intake (5 grams) by the World Health Organization.

The researchers used mice, and found that immune responses in the small intestines set off a cascade of chemical responses reaching the brain's blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the cortex and hippocampus, two brain regions crucial for learning and memory. This, in turn, brought a decline in tests of cognitive performance. The impairment in learning and memory was clear even in the absence of high blood pressure; they observed that the gut is reacting to the salt overload and directing immune signals that lay the basis for deterioration throughout the brain's vital vascular complex and compromise cognitive function. While this study has only been carried out on research animals so far, the scientists believe it's likely that much of the same applies to people.

Lowering salt intake has been shown to have beneficial effects to overall health, so the researchers wanted to know whether these effects extend to this newly identified signaling cascade that begins in the gut and targets the brain's blood vessels to, ultimately, affect cognitive function. When the mice were returned to a normal diet after being on a high salt diet, the detrimental health effects caused by excess salt intake were erased. A pharmacological intervention that disrupted the immune signals also reversed the effects.

The implications of this newly identified gut–brain connection extend to several autoimmune disorders, including multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease, that have been shown to activate the same immune signaling pathway implicated in this study. These autoimmune disorders have a high stroke risk and are linked to poorly functioning blood vessels in the nervous system. This research is also a demonstration that what we eat affects how we think, and that seemingly isolated parts of the body can play vital roles in brain health. These results motivate research on how everyday stressors to our digestive systems and blood vessels might change the brain and, consequently, how we see, and experience, the world.

Why do people prepare to survive dire emergencies when the odds – for most of us, at least – that something on the order of Oh-My-Freaking-Gourd! are so unlikely? The answer is simple:

Failing to plan is planning to fail.

Although the phrase is attributed to American Founding Father Benjamin Franklin, the words still ring true today. If you don't get your sh*t together now, Bad Things are bound to happen in a SHTF scenario when the world as you know it flies apart.

In this push-button era of modern convenience, it is almost inconceivable for most of us to imagine life without electricity, the life spark of household furnaces, stoves and ranges, and lighting fixtures.

Yet, a recent disaster, Hurricane Florence, had the force to shut off power to large residential areas in the Carolina states. As of Sunday, September 16, 2018, after Flo was downgraded to a tropical storm, "670,000 people remained without power in North Carolina," according to Newsweek.

The reality is that any number of events could turn off the electrical juice with little to no warning: flood, fire, or mass coronal ejection (solar flare), to name but three. Would you be able to cope on a daily basis if you had to produce your own heat sources to cook food, stay warm, and provide light?

For those whose answer was not an enthusiastic "You bet I could!" here are some creative ideas to solve the perennial problem of creating useful fire.

For starters – so to speak – the intelligent prepper stocks up on extra cigarette lighters and permanent and/or Everstryke matches. Heck, even restaurant matches are better than nothing. Get in the habit of picking up free matches whenever you see them. Keep them in waterproof containers.

Add extra lighters to your shopping list and gradually build up a good supply. I recommend you put your faith in the superior quality of Bic products:

"Full sized Bic lighters are supposed to burn for an hour, though not continuously. Mini Bic lighters contain less fuel and generally burn for around twenty minutes. However, if you light it and keep it lit, your lighter has around ten minutes before the top starts to deform from the heat."

Although Bic claims that their larger lighters, when full, can be flicked to make a flame 3,000 times, survivalists should have some mini Bic lighters as well since they can operate upside down. Their worn flints are easier to replace, too – assuming you remembered to get some replacement flints.

It takes more than a small open flame to start a fire, as anyone who has gone camping or lit a fireplace knows. Highly flammable tinder is also required. So what, exactly, is tinder, you ask?

"Tinder is a finely divided, open material which will begin to glow under a shower of sparks. Air is gently wafted over the glowing tinder until it bursts into flame. The flaming tinder is used to ignite kindling, which in turn is used to ignite the bulk material, to produce a fire."

Following are some flame and tinder sources you may have overlooked, even if you are a well-seasoned prepper:

1. Pair up a butane lighter with the frayed end of some ordinary twine.
2. Use an Everstryke Pro lighter to ignite a clean tampon that has been teased apart to expose more fiber.
3. Light a candle with an ordinary match.
4. Get some stormproof matches and set fire to a wad of steel wool. Seriously, the metallic threads burn great!
5. Take a double-A (AA) sized battery and a gum wrapper. With scissors, cut the wrapper into strips that are wider at the ends than in the middle. Hold each end of the thin, foiled-paper strip to the opposite ends of the battery. The middle of the strip will begin to smoke and catch fire. Alternatively, substitute some thin wire for the gum wrapper strips. (You may not want to share this tip with the kids. Just sayin'.)
6. Light a small pile of charcoal with an Everstryke match.
7. Buy a FireKable paracord bracelet. Dip several cotton balls in Vaseline (petroleum jelly) to coat them thoroughly, one at a time. Cluster them together and torch 'em.
8. Walmart sells 8-packs of ferrocerium rods, which produce sparks of 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit or hotter when scraped with a rough edge like a rock, or a sharp edge like a knife. Pile up a handful of dry leaves. Hold a single rod in one hand and strike it away from you (duh) with the other to set the leaves aflame.
9. Use an optic fire starter – also called a magnifying glass fire starter to focus a beam of light (from the sun or a high-wattage bulb) on a handful of wood shavings to ignite them.
10. Take an ordinary pencil and remove the eraser, leaving only the exterior wood and graphite center. Scrape or whittle the pencil in half with a knife or sharp rock to expose the graphite core. Pop the hood on a car or truck and attach one end of a battery cable (black to negative and red to positive) to the charged battery. Attach the other two battery cable clips to the split pencil, one on each end. Make sure that the copper teeth on the battery cable clips make contact (touch) the pencil graphite. Within seconds, the pencil will begin to smoke and within a minute or two the half-pencil will burst into flames. (Again, you may not want to share this tip with small children.)
11. These everyday items make great tinder, believe it or not:
Doritos snack chips
Alcohol swabs that come in little foil-lined packets

Remember, in a true emergency, creative thinking "outside the box" is one of your greatest strengths. Renowned psychologist Abraham Maslow said, "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail."

How to Survive Being Snowbound in Your Car

The New Year brings with it a time for renewals and resolutions. But also, for many parts of the country, the New Year means we are entering the worst of the winter storm season.

Snowstorms can be dangerous if you are caught unprepared for them, particularly on the road. Nearly 800 people die every year in the US, in winter storm related accidents, and many of those, by being snowbound on an impassible road. And do not think such a thing can only happen out in rural mountain country. In 2016 a mother and her young son died in Passaic, NJ, a large city, when they were stuck snowbound in a car in the aftermath of blizzard. The mother foolishly kept the car running to keep the heater going, not realizing that the tailpipe was clogged by snow, and the two quietly died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The first thing you need to know about safe winter travel, is to never ever venture out during the winter months, even when the sky is clear, without your Go Bag in your vehicle. Remember in addition to the Basic Go Bag items we have discussed in previous columns, your Winter Emergency Road Hazard Kit should also contain:

  • A warm blanket or two
  • Extra antifreeze and windshield wiper fluid
  • Jumper cables
  • A snow scraper
  • A tow chain
  • An extra hat, scarf and set of gloves
  • Road salt or sand

If you intend to, or need to do any kind of driving on mountain roads or back roads during snowstorm season, you should also consider taking a long a hand winch to pull your vehicle back onto the roadway, should it skid off. If you normally keep your go bag in the trunk – bring it, and any other emergency supplies you may need into the passenger compartment. If you get snowed in, you may not be able to reach the trunk for days or more.

If You Must Drive During a Snow Storm:

  • Wear sunglasses. You might want to keep a pair in the car just in case the sun is reflecting off the snow.
  • Be aware of blind spots created by snow banks.
  • Be extra cautious of pedestrians and other vehicles in intersections.
  • Allow extra time for braking and increase the distance between you and the car ahead of you.
  • Reduce your speed and don't exceed the posted limit.
  • If you start to lose traction, don't panic. Take your foot off the gas and gradually reduce your speed. Accelerate again slowly once you feel traction is regained.
  • If you start to skid, steer in the direction of the skid. Remember, steering can be more important than braking on slippery roads.

If you are traveling by road during the winter, or need to take roads or mountain passes that are known to become impassable during winter – always tell someone your ultimate destination and when you are expected to arrive.

NOTE: Four-wheel drive DOES NOT improve braking! It is easy in a good powerful 4WD vehicle to start driving faster than is safe.  4WD is great for forward traction and controlling steering, but when it comes to braking, you are no better off than in a regular car.  When driving a 4WD on a snowy road, you may not even be aware of how slippery it really is because of your improved traction, until you try the brakes! 

If You Become Trapped in Your Car During a Blizzard

Should you become snowbound in your car or truck, the first thing to do is STOP and assess the situation. Calm down, use your head and try the simplest solutions first. If you have a cell phone or CB radio in your vehicle, call for help. The sooner you can make contact with the outside world, the faster you'll be rescued.  Your next priority has to be to take steps to prevent hypothermia and frostbite. Do everything you can to prevent losing heat from your body. If you have extra clothes along, put them on. Then:

  • Turn on hazard lights and hang a distress flag from the radio antenna or window.
  • Remain in your vehicle where rescuers are most likely to find you. Do not set out on foot unless you can see a building close by where you know you can take shelter. Be careful; distances are distorted by blowing snow. A building may seem close, but be too far to walk to in deep snow.
  • You may be tempted to keep the engine ruining to run the heater for warmth. DO NOT DO THIS. You will consume too much fuel. Instead, run the engine and heater about 10 minutes each hour to keep warm. When the engine is running, open a downwind window slightly for ventilation and periodically clear snow from the exhaust pipe. This will protect you from possible carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Exercise to maintain body heat, but avoid overexertion. In extreme cold, if you do not have enough blankets for everyone in the vehicle, use road maps, seat covers, and floor mats for insulation. Huddle with passengers and use your coat for a blanket.
  • Take turns sleeping. One person should be awake at all times to look for rescue crews.
  • Eat regularly and drink ample fluids to avoid dehydration, but avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  • Be careful not to waste battery power. Balance electrical energy needs – the use of lights, heat, and radio – with supply.
  • Turn on the inside light at night periodically so work crews or rescuers can see you.
  • If stranded in a remote area, stomp large block letters in an open area spelling out HELP or SOS and line with rocks or tree limbs to attract the attention of rescue personnel who may be surveying the area by airplane.
  • Leave the car and proceed on foot, only if necessary – once the blizzard passes. If you are forced to move, make sure you clearly mark a trail from the vehicle.  Leave a note in your vehicle stating your intention, the time you left, the direction you set out in and where you were headed. Be realistic about your ability to hike out of a heavy snow — what sounds like a good idea may become deadly if you don't make your destination by nightfall.

NOTE:  You can use snow as a source of water – but always remember do not eat snow to prevent dehydration. Eating snow will lower you body temperature, and it uses your body's energy to melt it, which can speed hypothermia. Melt snow in a cup, water bottle, or other container, and then drink it.

Be prepared to leave the vehicle for short periods to accomplish certain tasks. For example, you should clear off some snow to reveal paint or reflective surfaces so your vehicle can be seen from a search aircraft. You might need to leave to collect some snow to melt for drinking water or to take a bathroom break.

Otherwise, just be patient—in most cases you're not going to be able to shovel your way back to civilization or hike out safely – but you are likely being looked for. It is always best to stay with the vehicle. Think you can't last too long stuck in the snow in your car? In February of 2012 a Swedish man was discovered and rescued. He had been trapped in his car for TWO MONTHS since December 19th, when the vehicle became snowbound on a remote forest road.

Final Thoughts

As with a lot of the disasters discussed on these pages – the best way to survive being snowbound in your vehicle is to avoid the situation, by staying off of the roads during, and when a blizzard or severe winter storm is predicted.

Most people who wind up stranded, do so because they have miscalculated the severity of a storm, or their ability to drive through it or get ahead of it.

The world, and we as individuals are getting more enlightened, moving away from simple materialistic pleasure and actually questioning ourselves in what brings us joy. And as the world evolves, designing for this world needs to evolve. It is time for us to sit down and reimagine the future of product design and what values would play a major role in this field. It's a world where we own fewer, smarter, more thoughtful things, and expect more from them — except for the things we've abandoned entirely in favor of a service that replaces it. We potentially live richer, healthier lives with fewer distractions, and although we're getting more out of our technology, we actually interact with it less.

It's an exciting future, and also a demanding one since it relies on products and services that haven't been invented yet, but which customers have already come to expect. If you're planning on being a part of this future, it's worth putting some serious thought into how these trends will change the things you design, and how your customers are going to use them:

1. Pursuit of Exclusivity

Brands have always offered mass-market and premium offerings but never has the line dividing them been so blurred. Today's luxury customers are often comfortable with lower-cost products if they're perceived as unique or timeless (witness Sharon Stone's then jaw-dropping decision to wear Gap to the 1998 Oscars), while mainstream consumers accessorize their lives with occasional high-end purchases, whether it's a smartphone, a pair of shoes, or a yoga retreat.

But where hi-brow/low-brow blending was once a DIY effort, now companies themselves are embracing the trend. Increasingly, their product ranges offer broad, overlapping levels of luxury within a single, all-embracing brand. "Affordable luxury" is a common refrain, as is high-end inconspicuous consumption, where organic produce and designer bags can demand significant markups despite being almost indistinguishable from their mainstream peers. The data back up this observation, too, with premium and entry-to-luxury now the fastest growing segments in many categories.

What's driving this trend?

  • Sustained economic growth means more consumers with the financial means to seek out premium offerings.
  • At the same time, traditional displays of ostentatious wealth are becoming less socially acceptable.
  • More product offerings in every price range means that finding something "exclusive" is no longer just an option for the very rich.
  • Social media provides more windows into the range of what's available, making connoisseurs of us all.

What does this imply for design?

  • Differentiation & uniqueness are now a huge part of "premium." So seek opportunities to create unique experiences at scale — as Airbnb did with its "Airbnb Plus" initiative, leveraging the creativity of its hosts to offer well-vetted alternatives to luxury hotels, with far more variety.
  • When expanding a product line, consider adding a higher-end offering or variant on a familiar product, especially if it can offer some sense of a luxury experience at a relatively low cost.
  • Present higher-end options in terms of personal benefit: less "impress the neighbors" and more "do something kind for yourself."

2. Experience More

Services are now seen as indispensable, in a way few physical goods are. In the last economic downturn, people often did without a new car or a bigger house but hung on to their mobile service, broadband, gym membership, and Netflix subscriptions. In part, this is because services are more durable: they can't be lost, they automatically update, and they can be modified and expanded to fit changing life circumstances.

But it's also because services offer multi-dimensional experiences that can be ultimately more fulfilling than owning something physical. Given the choice, many consumers (especially Millennials) will opt to spend on a trip, a class, or a professional consultation over splurging on a car or piece of furniture. In daily life, they'll often seek out a service first, only settling on a physical product if there's no other option. And if a product comes with a service component bundled in, so much the better.

What's driving this trend?

  • The constant connectivity afforded by mobile devices, social media, and ubiquitous wireless often makes services more accessible and convenient than goods.
  • The Access (or Sharing) Economy has introduced innumerable services that replace products with an interface that makes existing resources more accessible: Uber, Car2Go, Airbnb, Amazon, etc.
  • People are more likely to share experiences (travel, dining, physical activity, etc.) on social media than physical goods, leading to greater awareness of what's out there, and a certain amount of FOMO.
  • Consumers are recognizing that experiences often deliver more happiness and satisfaction than physical products.

What does this imply for design?

  • Look for the root causes of consumer desires. Do people really want better lamps, or just better light?
  • Seek opportunities for adding a service component to an existing product: an app that enhances it, a subscription service that keeps it in optimal condition, etc. Design physical and service elements hand-in-hand, so they combine to offer a seamless, more satisfying experience.
  • Build on the brand equity of physical products with a service offering.

3. Quest for Convenience

Time: it's the only thing you can't earn more of. In the past decade, more and more consumers are answering "yes" to the question of whether it's worth spending money to free up time. In part, it's not just because we seem to be more time-strapped than ever, but it's also because of technology, which has created a rich ecosystem of services and devices ready to take on time-consuming tasks for a reasonable cost.

Alexa, Nest, and Apple (among many others) have made great strides in recent years at building a coherent network of devices that share data and draw on deep wells of processing power and predictive capability. They've gotten so good at it, in fact, that many consumers barely notice them, working them seamlessly into their daily routines. Just a few years ago, connecting a device to the internet or giving it rudimentary sensory and predictive capabilities was a novelty — something to delight users and stand out in a crowded field. Today this kind of intelligence is seen as utilitarian.

At every income level, people no longer feel obligated to do boring or unpleasant tasks, and the idea of paying for help is no longer limited to those wealthy enough to hire servants. Companies like Framebridge and Warby-Parker have built huge followings by taking inconvenient, expensive tasks and making them faster, cheaper, and more enjoyable. Apps, subscription services, home delivery — even in-house robots — are allowing us to reduce the time spent on the mundane, and focus more on the meaningful and delightful.

What's driving this trend?

  • We increasingly understand that reducing stress and freeing up time is crucial to the quality of life.
  • High-quality apps and services are reducing people's tolerance for complicated processes with numerous steps.
  • AI and predictive algorithms are improving, offering more ways to "skip to the end" of interaction and making instant personalization far more effective.
  • Technology is making it far easier to add intelligence to almost any product or interaction: smart buttons, smart cameras, smart thermostats, etc. As connected intelligence stops being remarkable, their real impact is ready to be felt.

What does this imply for design?

  • Look for opportunities to automate. What common, mundane task could be simplified or taken over completely by a smarter product or service?
  • Simplify, simplify, simplify. A pared-down aesthetic implies lower effort, less fuss, less wasted time.
  • If you add intelligence to a product, do it in a way that demands less effort on the part of the user, not more. Take advantage of the improved standardization in IoT and connectivity, to create intelligent devices that plug into customers' existing ecosystems and work with their expectations.

4. Everyday Wellness

"Wellness" is the new watchword. Where our relationship to our bodies used to be primarily reactive and corrective, today a growing fraction of people see health as something that happens every day, through the decisions we make and the things we eat, think, and do. Affluent consumers, in particular, are more likely than ever to put self-care at the top of their list of priorities — a marked shift from a decade or two ago.

For companies, this opens up opportunities in two directions. Products and services that were once the sole domain of health professionals are becoming available to consumers — 23andMe offers genetic analysis, Fitbit tracks your physical activity, numerous apps help monitor and improve your sleep, nutrition, and even behavior and mood. At the same time, consumer offerings are being enhanced with wellness-enhancing features, from copper-infused sheets to fight bacteria, to hotel rooms and bathrooms with fine-tuned lighting, sound, and furnishings — all oriented toward enabling and improving well-being.

What's driving this trend?

  • A steady stream of research points to the important lifestyle choices have in maintaining good health — from physical activity and diet to stress management.
  • Online research and personal health tracking provide consumers with far more information about their own health than ever before.
  • A backlash to the traditional, paternalistic view of medicine has convinced many consumers to take health into their own hands.
  • The rise of "inconspicuous consumption" makes wellness-oriented purchases and experiences a key marker of exclusivity and sophistication.

What does this imply for design?

  • Many companies already have an existing product or service that enhances wellness in some way: stress reduction, self-tracking, time savings, etc. Look at the user experience through that lens and find ways to build on it.
  • Partnerships between consumer product manufacturers and wellness-focused companies can bring benefits for both.
  • For medical device companies, in particular, there's an abundant opportunity in simplifying existing products in order to expand their audience into either consumer or parallel professional markets.

5. Ethical Living

It's no longer enough for a company to talk about doing good; today you have to actually be good. Even more than governments and nonprofits, today's consumers see companies like the ones responsible for protecting the environment and human rights, and it's never been easier to find out when their actions don't match their rhetoric.

This is all part of a larger trend, of trying to live more in harmony with the world, and it takes many forms. Companies like Tom's, Everlane, and LuckyNelly have seen rapid growth by being overtly ethical and transparent about their business practices, and major brands like Whirlpool and Salesforce are rolling out new products and buildings specifically designed to make sustainable living easier.

On a personal level, many consumers are embracing a "less is more" philosophy, opting to live with fewer possessions, but perhaps spending more on an individual purchase if it holds the promise of greater longevity or utility.

What's driving this trend?

  • Constant global media coverage is making us more aware than ever of issues of inequality and environmental damage — and consumerism's role in them.
  • A wide range of ethically driven companies and products exist in almost any category imaginable, from sustainable shoes and dish soap to energy neutral hotels and culturally sensitive vacations.
  • Many of these options are relatively affordable, giving everyday consumers the ability to feel like philanthropists.

What does this imply for design?

  • Design for longevity, repairability, and multi-functionality. Consumers are increasingly looking for the last [insert word here] they'll ever need, and are willing to pay a premium for it.
  • Lean toward aesthetic cues that imply simplicity and honesty.
  • Look for ways to be better as a company, in terms of energy use, environmental impact, ethical sourcing, worker treatment, and overall transparency. Giving consumers a clear glimpse into your actions is more convincing than a PR campaign.

You Don't Want to Know What They Do to Oranges (And It's About to Get Even Worse)

Something is happening to oranges. The solution may be worse than the problem and there's about to be a lot more solution.

Oranges are cast as the pinnacle of American wholesomeness. Orange juice is a marketing empire in its own right. The "OJ" industry has successfully made its product synonymous with life-giving vitamin C and a complete breakfast. But is that really the case?

The truth is, you don't know what they do to oranges.

You probably think I'm talking about swaths of pesticides being sprayed on orange groves, but no, no, no. That's only the tip of the iceberg.

Did you know that oranges are routinely sprayed with antibiotics? 

Yeah, how odd, right?

The same antibiotics that are used to treat humans and animals for bacterial infections. We already ingest many antibiotics through our food if we are not careful, because of the antibiotics given to livestock, meat especially, but also eggs, farmed fish, milk, and cheese.

Now we ingest antibiotics from oranges?

Doesn't that make the problem of antibiotic resistance much, much worse?

Yes, it does. And the problem isn't just what we eat, it's also the runoff of antibiotics into our waterways.

But how did that happen?

America's orange groves have been facing a major problem with a widespread disease called citrus greening that has reportedly ripped through the citrus industry.

If you think that sounds bad, the Trump administration reportedly gave approval for an unprecedented amount of antibiotic use. Agricultural operations are allowed to spray two kinds of antibiotics on nearly a half-million acres of Florida citrus fruits.

Florida Phoenix Journal reports:

Federal officials are allowing greatly expanded use of streptomycin and oxytetracycline –  antibiotics often used on people — as a pesticide on commercially grown citrus. Agricultural operations plan to use the antibiotic sprays to combat the widespread disease called citrus greening, which has devastated the citrus industry. The antibiotics won't cure the disease, and will have to be sprayed repeatedly over years just to keep the trees alive and producing fruit until they succumb to citrus greening.

Allowing so much antibiotic residue in Florida soils, runoff, and air is unprecedented. It's unclear how much of the antibiotics – sprayed on leaves and taken up into the plant's vascular system – will end up in fruit; it's never been sprayed on this scale before. Test results the citrus industry provided to federal officials reported low antibiotic residues. (source)

The EPA expressed concerns for potential harm to the environment, people, and wildlife, but ultimately decided the economic benefits "outweighed" the risks.

The USDA reasons that the amount of antibiotics people will ingest from citrus will be far less than those ingested during prescription use.

Despite the outcry from various environmental and antibiotics interest groups, Florida's Department of Agriculture and many citrus growers made the request to use more antibiotics.

Antibiotic resistance affects more than just humans.

The Journal continues:

…One EPA analysis notes that "uncertainty exists regarding the potential for development of resistance, or cross-resistance with other antibiotics, that could result from pesticide applications."

Both the European Union and Brazil have banned the use of oxytetracycline and streptomycin for use as a pesticide on agricultural plants.

…The concern is that the antibiotics which now work on human problems like pneumonia, tuberculosis and other deadly infections will become ineffective. Another concern is that the antibiotics will affect bees, which pollinate citrus flowers, as well as small mammals like rabbits. In the environment, antibiotics can change the chemistry of soil and water, knocking ecosystems out of balance.

For citrus growers, the last 10 years have been a nightmare as citrus greening spread from South Florida north, affecting groves in dozens of counties. They spray pesticides to kill the imported insect that carries the disease, but it hasn't stopped citrus greening's forward march up the peninsula. They are also working to develop new strains of citrus that resist the disease. The antibiotics, they argued in numerous comment letters to federal officials, are the only known way to stay in business. The press office of the Florida Department of Agriculture did not respond to requests for comment. So, as you can see, farmers are in a hard place and they argue that a proposed solution of "cycling" between the two antibiotics may not work. But the short term fix may lead to either antibiotic resistance or… the development of even more genetically engineered crops.

You don't want to know what they do to oranges

Did you know that orange juice is fake news?

In my article, "3 TOTALLY FAKE Foods in Just About Everybody's Kitchen," I reported on how orange juice is really made.

As Gizmodo explained a while back, OJ is anything but natural:

Once the juice is squeezed and stored in gigantic vats, they start removing oxygen. Why? Because removing oxygen from the juice allows the liquid to keep for up to a year without spoiling. But! Removing that oxygen also removes the natural flavors of oranges. Yeah, it's all backwards. So in order to have OJ actually taste like oranges, drink companies hire flavor and fragrance companies, the same ones that make perfumes for Dior, to create these "flavor packs" to make juice taste like, well, juice again. This is why nearly all orange juice tastes exactly the same, no matter which carton you open. Some companies add pulp-dissolving enzymes to the mix.

Here's an article with a photo of an orange juice factory that shows whole oranges sitting right in the juice.

If that's a typical occurrence, then it stands to reason there are pesticides and antibiotics floating around in that glass of juice.

Don't want the yuck that comes from conventional oranges?

Here are some ways you can mitigate some of these problems:

  • Choose organic oranges when possible
  • Reduce how often you handle citrus with your hands
  • Wash hands immediately after handling
  • If you have time, gently scrub oranges with baking soda and veggie wash before putting them in the fruit bowl
  • Only buy organic orange juice or brands from this list
  • Make your own fresh squeezed juice.
  • Simply eat oranges instead of drinking orange juice.

Are citrus antibiotics going to cause more (genetically engineered) mosquitoes?

One more weird aspect to this news: genetically engineered mosquitoes have been released in testing trials in parts of Florida, the state that's known for having the best oranges.

At first, the company pushing the mosquitoes argued that it would reduce scary diseases like Dengue fever and Chikungunya. But those haven't occurred in Florida for years… Oh, look! here comes Zika, what a coincidence.

Anyway, these mosquitoes were developed by private biotech companies to mate with Florida mosquitoes so that the offspring will all die off.

But wait? Couldn't that eventually kill off the entire mosquito population and cause a negative domino effect in the animal kingdom?

Here is something most people don't know about these modified mosquitoes.

They can only be rescued from their genetically engineered die-off by being fed tetracycline

Yes, the same family of antibiotics that oxytetracycline belongs!

Is this not a crazy situation, or what?

We now face a future where we must either keep feeding antibiotics to citrus groves to eat and face antibiotic resistance or use a similar antibiotic if something goes terribly wrong by the release of engineered pests into the wild…

Amazon Just Broke Into Health Care. Is Energy Next?

Technology is omnipresent, but there are still a few apps and services that would be missed if they disappeared. If you could no longer order shampoo, toothpaste or a television for delivery within a day or two, you would notice. The same for no longer being able to watch almost any movie ever made with the click of a button. So if Amazon evaporated into thin air, life would be very different.

Last year, the tech retail giant announced it would partner with Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase to create a new venture aimed at using big data to lower the rapidly growing costs of U.S. health care. Amazon's foray into the health sector, an essential industry, raised the obvious question: What would happen if Jeff Bezos' behemoth made a play for other essential industries?

Austin Whitman, vice president of energy markets at FirstFuel Software, speculates that the utility industry could be next. After working in the clean energy space for over a decade, Whitman believes the world needs more analytics and intelligence when it comes to energy consumption. To get ahead of an Amazon disruption, energy stakeholders should consider how this would affect the industry. Whitman shared his thoughts with OZY.

Which utility sectors is Amazon most likely to get involved with?

It's interesting to think about what Amazon is doing for health care. It's a slow-moving, very regulated sector and they're thinking about how to improve it. There are a lot of parallels between health care and utility. There are a lot of things you can do to provide energy that don't necessarily mean you own power plants, or the transmission lines and heavy infrastructure. There's a lot of focus right now on the retail aspect of energy provision, and if I had to guess, I would say Amazon would be more involved in retail innovations. They have a history of operational and logistics innovations — being able to bring you a gallon of milk in two hours, for example — so I think there's a lot they could do on the retail side.

Which utility providers would do well to avoid an Amazon takeover?

Well, it's a question of whether Amazon would take over an established provider or become an energy provider on its own. I don't see any likely takeover targets unless they were to look at what's called a competitive energy retailer — companies that buy energy from generators and sell it to customers but don't actually own any of the infrastructure. We're starting to see more of a split. For example, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) in California wouldn't send you the bill, it would be sent by another company. So PG&E becomes the logistics provider that gets you the energy but someone else actually works out the deal, sends you the bill, determines prices and manages your relationship. Many regulators see this as a way of introducing more innovation to customers.

What would an Amazon-owned utility company look like?

It's about pricing and understanding how you pay for energy and what you pay. If you ask anyone about their utility bill, they generally don't know the difference between transmission and distribution, transition charges and energy efficiency charges. And the way the pricing is done is pretty arcane. Amazon could certainly help us get better at how we price energy, but they could also elevate customer trust — Amazon is really good at understanding the customer and matching products to customers. They also could make things simpler to understand and potentially bundle services … It would change the way people understand energy and how they pay for it.

Would Amazon address customer concerns in a better fashion than current providers?

There are two aspects of energy services: There's what's on my bill — how I'm using energy — and then there's how I could use energy better. Amazon operates a marketplace, and it does focus on reviews and ratings. If I were to try to find someone to install solar panels today, it's a terrible process. I could never get a sense of who does a good job, who does a bad job and so on. We're going to see a lot more energy services like solar panels and batteries soon, so Amazon could easily apply that history of providing ratings to make it easier for people to buy energy services.

Should we be worried about Amazon taking over everything from an ethical standpoint? What are the risks?

To the extent that energy is a monopoly service, the big question is, can everybody get access to the basic energy service they need? If I can't find a power drill on Amazon, I can go to the hardware store. I have plenty of options, and if I don't get the power drill at all, that's OK. But electricity and other utilities like water and gas are essential services, which is why the energy industry is so heavily regulated. They're fundamental! When the power goes out, your life grinds to a halt. With every evolution in the utility sector, the question is, will it benefit us without jeopardizing the security of everyone having access to affordable service?

But having said that, there's a lot that Amazon could do. Maybe there's a PG&E that provides service but then an Amazon sits on top of them and provides a ton of innovative product options related to energy. More broadly, do we have a problem with Amazon getting too big and touching everything? I think that ship has sailed.

CVS Health reveals plans for Health Hub stores - Business Insider


CVS Health just revealed a key piece of its plan to change how Americans get healthcare

  • CVS Health and Aetna have officially combined to create an entirely new kind of healthcare company.
  • In a presentation Tuesday at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco, CVS CEO Larry Merlo laid out the first steps the combined company is taking to change healthcare.
  • CVS is opening a test store in Houston with more healthcare services, and also plans to test programs to treat chronic diseases and keep patients out of the hospital.

CVS Health and Aetna officially merged at the end of 2018.

The $70 billion merger combines a chain of nearly 10,000 pharmacies that also owns a drug benefits business with one of the biggest US health insurers. The result is an entirely new healthcare company that can wield a tremendous amount of power over how healthcare gets paid for and provided to patients.

In a presentation on Tuesday at the JPMorgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco, CVS CEO Larry Merlo outlined for the first time how the combined company will provide healthcare differently. The main goals are: keeping patients healthier and out of the hospital, caring for patients at less-costly locations (such as CVS's clinics instead of emergency rooms), and pioneering new methods of caring for devastating chronic diseases like cancer and heart failure.

Achieving those goals will help CVS boost its profits. Since it now owns is a health insurer, the company will spend less on medical care if it can keep customers healthier, or care for them at clinics instead of hospitals.

A big component of the strategy is providing more healthcare in CVS stores, both at the pharmacy counter and via the company's MinuteClinics. To make space, CVS is removing some products from the front of the stores where it's piloting the new approach.

"We can open a new front door to health that is both easier to use and less expensive, while at the same time, providing convenient access to high-quality health care," Merlo said during the presentation.

The strategy also helps CVS find new use for the floor space in its 9,800 locations, as customers increasingly shop for everyday goods on Amazon. And providing more care in stores can help CVS counter forays by rivals like Amazon into healthcare. Amazon, for its part, acquired the pharmacy startup PillPack last year, marking its entry into the drug-delivery business.

To start, CVS is opening up its first "health hub" in a redesigned store in Houston in February. On Tuesday, the company revealed what that store will look like. You can see that there's a lot more store space devoted to providing healthcare, including at the clinic and pharmacy.

The MinuteClinics in the pilot stores will offer more services, including disease screenings and blood draws. CVS already has about 1,100 MinuteClinics across its stores. They're usually staffed by nurse practitioners or physicians' assistants, and now provide basic checkups and care for minor illnesses and ailments.

The stores will also have a "care concierge," who might help individuals understand how their health insurance works, or help them use health and wellness devices and technology.

CVS is also testing several other initiatives to improve how its customers get healthcare, using the resources of the combined company.

In one program, CVS pharmacists will call Aetna members who the company thinks could be at high risk of a negative health event, and counsel them on how to improve their health. A second outreach program will focus specifically on Aetna members with heart disease.

Another focuses on Aetna customers who've been in the hospital. To make sure they get the care they need after leaving the hospital and prevent them from having to go back, Aetna care managers will schedule followup visits for them at MinuteClinics, if they can't get in to see their usual doctor.

At the MinuteClinic, healthcare providers can make sure the patients understand their disease and how to manage it. They'll also check that patients have the right prescription drugs and know how to take them.

"Helping people on their path to better health has been a cornerstone of our purpose at CVS," Merlo said. "As we zoom out and look at the broader health care market and the savings that can be achieved by more effectively managing chronic conditions, the opportunity here is massive"
