End the Export of Canadian Cancer!

Canada is the only G8 country still mining and selling asbestos

This website collects examples of leading national and international scientific and popular opinions calling on the Canadian government to stop the mining and export of Canadian chrysotile asbestos to unprotected developing nations.
In every stage of its life cycle, asbestos promiscuously sheds tiny dust fibers. Once inhaled, the fibres become tangled in lung tissues, where they wreak a cancerous havoc - typically lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma, the latter a rare, painful and terminal cancer of the lining of the chest wall.
The World Health Organization estimates that asbestos kills at least 90,000 people a year - about half of all occupational cancer deaths. Strict occupational health and safety rules in Canada protect Canadian workers’ exposure to the mineral. The federal government spends millions to rid Parliament, under the strictest protective guidelines, of its remaining asbestos. In the summer of 2009, the Canadian Medical Association voted 95% to stop Canadian mining and export of asbestos.

However, the Canadian government continues to see nothing wrong with the continued mining and export of deadly Canadian asbestos to unprotected developing nations.

it's about time....

Make a Wish. | elephant journal

I still wish on stars, sometimes.

When one is not enough I wish on constellations;

(I wish on entire galaxies.)

You can have my wish tonight. I’ll wish it for you.

I wish you passion that slips in through your skin and wakes you, before you’re ready.

I wish you hope that surrounds you and tucks you in at night.

I wish you quiet when you don’t seek it, and noisy when you need it. I wish you a song that slides inside your hips and won’t be still. I wish you a laugh that throws your head back and refuses to be contained.

I wish you your eight-year-old smile, escaping, in the middle of your important, grown-up day.

(I saw it once peeking out, before you put it away. I know it’s in there.)

I wish you wistful wanting that goes unfulfilled...for awhile.

I wish all your jagged edges washed smooth by tears that come from laughing too hard and too long; from beauty that makes them spill out without your permission.

I wish you forgetting. I wish the ink of your old hurts faded, weathered by the sun, until you can’t read them anymore.

I wish you a dream that sinks its teeth into you and won’t let go. That interrupts your plans. That keeps you up at night.

I wish you a heart that aches from stretching in undiscovered places.

I wish you more, and again more, and yes still more: love.

exohuman | Denver Airport’s Secret Underground Base
Who Knew? You have to listen to Jesse Ventura investigate this. I even remember Obama being in Denver that weekend, right after the bunker thing. W.T.F?
Have to admit that I got the creeps when i went through there this summer, meeting up to drive back again. Arrived at noon, left at 1pm and was out of state by 4pm. Still, I had that hour, and I had followed the construction project as a sideline, I thought it was too ugly and insensitive to represent Denver and the over-runs drove me nuts as a project manager. In August I felt like I was in a desert fortress. Surrounding skirts of endless auto lanes without barriers disappeared into the horizon of more highways and vacant landing area. hmm. It is not your Detroit or Miami kind of airport.

Perfect Gift for Enemies, Strangers, Friends and More

perfect gift

The Perfect Gift for Children
The Perfect Gift for Enemies, Strangers, Friends and
All Deserving People
(A Revelation in a Shopping Mall)

by Brian Vaszily, founder of IntenseExperiences.com

“The Perfect Gift for Him!” “The Perfect Gift for Grandma!” “The Perfect Gift for That Person Who Thinks They’re Perfect!”
Whether it’s on TV, the radio, the newspaper, in stores, or in your email inbox, by now you’ve likely witnessed – and perhaps tried to ignore -- dozens or hundreds of ads along these lines.

What follows is not another diatribe against the materialistic excesses of the holidays; most people already are aware that the holidays are too materialistic, and in the U.S. at least, 3 in 4 wish it weren’t so according to a recent study*. Nonetheless, most people still tend to go overboard on holiday gifts, and at least there is something to be said for the fun of exchanging those gifts.

Instead what follows is my own guide to what I believe you will agree are truly perfect gifts to try your best to give ... during the holiday season and all year long.

I wish I could claim to have been inspired to create this while taking a solitary walk in the snowy woods beneath the moonlight or something similarly romantic. But the truth is I was inspired to create this when I got frustrated while shopping at a mega-mall where I couldn’t find a decent gift, much less the perfect one, for several people in my life.

I took a step back from my frustration, inhaled a few deep breaths, and then ended up really taking in all the people and activity going on around me. The throng of zigzagging strangers of all races and many different cultures on their shopping missions. The Salvation Army bell ringer with uncombed hair and dirty fingernails ringing his bell. The Santa with a yellow beard and smoker’s rasp ho-ho-hoing in the center of the mall, a long line of children wiggling and squealing in fear and delight before him.

Long story short, removing myself from the bustle and instead observing it, I was reminded that while worrying about the perfect material gift was just silly, doing my best to give the following perfect gifts now and all year long is as worthwhile as it gets.

My children, and the world’s children, are watching me. They will not learn from what I tell them to do; instead they will learn from what I actually do. If I practice intolerance for those with different viewpoints or physical features, I accept the world our children will run will be an even more intolerant place. If I practice tolerance, forgiveness and love, I expect the world they will run will be a more tolerant, forgiving and loving place. That is the perfect gift for my own children and the world’s children: my example.

The Perfect Gift for “Enemies”
Whether they trespassed against me intentionally or not, and even if they are aware of their trespasses against me but still cannot or will not alter their course, I will not allow hatred to take hold in my heart for anyone. Hatred only destroys, including destroying my dreams, peace and happiness and therefore destroying those around me who love me and depend on me. Even if I must take action to pursue what is right with those who have violated me in some way, I will take noble action with a loving heart, and even as I must act I will do so with forgiveness in my heart. That is the perfect gift for my “enemies” and all the lives they touch, which means my life and all lives: forgiveness.

The Perfect Gift for Friends
A true friend is someone who feels the same about me as I do about them: I don’t seek to take from them but instead thrive by giving of myself to them. The time, energy, and most of all the understanding I can provide them make me better, and I am at peace that they feel the same toward me. That is the perfect gift for my friends: my commitment to their heart.

The Perfect Gift for Strangers
Strangers are not threats to my way of life, they are potential for an even greater life. Though my ego may fear strangers and want to barricade me from the different perspectives they may offer, I will not let my ego confine me away from the greater happiness that can be mine. Every person of positive significance in my life was once a stranger to me too, and therefore strangers are gifts. Therefore, the perfect gift I can give to strangers is my embrace of them.

The Perfect Gift for Those in Need
I do not need to agree with any of the choices that may have led them there, nor do I even need to know or understand those choices, to give to those in need. I am not a flawless being equipped to make others in my image and therefore judge them when they are not, but I am a loving being equipped to make the world a better place by putting that love into action.

The 23 Most Powerful Secrets to Be Happy

If I practice indifference to anyone in need, or they must pass my judgment before I extend my hand, I accept that I will be treated the same if I am ever in need, and that others I care about will be treated the same if they ever are. If I practice unconditional love, I accept that the world will become more of an unconditionally loving place. Attentive conversations with lonely elderly people, serving meals to the homeless, generous donations to the destitute, visiting the sick and forgotten in hospitals, long and genuine hugs for those down on their luck who hold a different political or religious view from my own… the perfect gift for those in need, and for anyone, is my love in the form of action.

It is the gift that keeps on giving.

It is the spirit of the holidays.

This love in action, I remembered while watching all those shoppers rush by with their treasures, is the only gift that has ever kept our world merry and bright.

It turned out to be the most worthwhile experience I ever had at a shopping mall.

Happy Holidays, and may your healthy perspective and loving heart bring you the gift of a wonderful New Year.

Earthjustice - Historic Victory for Clean Air |:

Historic Victory for Clean Air

On December 21st, the Obama administration committed to cleaning up the unrivaled amounts of mercury, arsenic and other toxic air pollution emitted by coal-fired power plants—the nation's worst toxic air polluters. Earthjustice has worked tirelessly for more than a decade to achieve this outcome, which will improve the lives and health of Americans across the country who now suffer from tremendous pollution.

"It's like hell. Living in hell," says Marti Blake as she describes what it's like to be the neighbor of a coal-fired power plant. "It's filthy, it's dirty, it's noisy."

For 21 years, Marti has lived in the shadow of massive smokestacks that rain down pollution on her community. Thanks to this recent action, relief is on the horizon for Marti's community and hundreds of other communities across the country.

Edward Burtynsky [ Photographic Works ]

Exploring the Residual Landscape

"Nature transformed through industry is a predominant theme in my work. I set course to intersect with a contemporary view of the great ages of man; from stone, to minerals, oil, transportation, silicon, and so on. To make these ideas visible I search for subjects that are rich in detail and scale yet open in their meaning. Recycling yards, mine tailings, quarries and refineries are all places that are outside of our normal experience, yet we partake of their output on a daily basis.

These images are meant as metaphors to the dilemma of our modern existence; they search for a dialogue between attraction and repulsion, seduction and fear. We are drawn by desire - a chance at good living, yet we are consciously or unconsciously aware that the world is suffering for our success. Our dependence on nature to provide the materials for our consumption and our concern for the health of our planet sets us into an uneasy contradiction. For me, these images function as reflecting pools of our times."

The Hijacking of Jesus

The Hijacking of Jesus
"...The hijacking of Jesus

What is so interesting is about all this is not only the fact that this movement is changing the global conversation but also how the Christian church is finally, rather belatedly, reclaiming the rightful moral stance of Jesus Christ.

Since the rise of the religious right in America, Jesus began to stand for prosperity and American military – what noted theologian Karl Barth once called the ‘criminal arrogance of religion.’ Having money and military might was a sign that God was blessing you, and being deprived of either in some way was a sign that God had turned his back on you. In short, we created a spirituality of capitalism and a religion of Western – particularly American - imperialism.

Jesus’ name was invoked and hijacked by the likes of George Bush and Tony Blair, to justify unpopular political or economic decisions, including the invasion of Iraq. Goldman Sachs’ CEO Lloyd Blankfein claimed that he was doing ‘God’s work.’ And through all this the various denominations of Christianity have kept conspicuously silent.

Although the Archbishop of Canterbury has supported the Occupy movement, yesterday, Jackson lambasted St. Paul’s cathedral for its ambivalent attitude toward the protesters. The church reversed its original decision to join action by the Corporation of London to evict the campers, but has now placing barriers in front of the cathedral steps. "The church should be the headquarters for the Occupy movement,’ he said. ‘In a sense, the occupiers represent the conscience of the church.’

In response to St. Paul’s fence-sitting Occupiers have been holding up signs that read: ‘What would Jesus have done?’

Unlike George Bush, I don’t pretend to speak for God, but just looking at Jesus’ track record I have a decent idea what he might have done. He certainly wouldn’t be trying to take the occupiers to court, and he wouldn’t have simply joined them in a tent. To my mind, Jesus would be marching into investment banks on Wall Street and chucking computers out the window.

Jesus, it’s important to remember, was a revolutionary, and much of what he preached was challenging and extraordinarily radical for his day. Jesus’ single act of vandalism and violence occurred in the Herod’s Temple, in the courtyard of which livestock were up for sale and the ‘money changers’ exchanged Greek and Roman money for Jewish and Tyrian currency.

After overturning the tables and chairs, he fashioned a whip from some cords, and drove all the moneychangers and the livestock out the door, dumped their money on the floor, and shouted after them, ‘It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.’

Jackson made reference to the Cleansing of the Temple story, when announcing to the occupiers, ‘You represent Jesus standing outside the temple,’ and Tutu invoked ‘the higher calling of Our Lord Jesus Christ,’ when asking for an end to ‘injustice, unfairness, and the stranglehold of greed which has beset humanity in our times’.

Belatedly as it may be, the Christian church is finally wrenching Christ away from the politicos and the moneychangers, and reclaiming Him as both radical reformer and a symbol of universal connection, love and justice."

(you Intended that, didn't you, Lynne?!)

Startup redefines the to-go coffee cup | SmartPlanet

Startup redefines the to-go coffee cup | SmartPlanet

Peter Herman, whose day job is an architect at the Ellenzweig firm in Cambridge, Massachusetts, spent two years of his free time to construct a cup that he calls “Compleat.”
The all-paper, disposable cup  folds like a takeout container to form a sipping spout. The cup is made of just one piece of (waterproofed) paper glued to a round base. Herman said that ideally the waterproofing would be done with cellulose-based plastic so that the cups would be compostable.
Herman estimated that Complete would also eventually save retailers money since the cup is only one part and can be sourced through one supplier, also giving them incentive to use the cups. However, Herman admitted to Co.Designthat figuring out the actual cost benefits would require direct collaboration with both retailers and manufacturers.
Herman thinks that shape alone of Complete is iconic enough to perform “priceless PR,” that would tell consumers that a retailer was committed to do their part in reducing plastic waste.
It is still unclear when Compleat will be available, though Herman said he is in negotiations with producers, distributors and retailers. A complete redesign of a paper cup doesn’t solve the problem of to-go cup waste, but it does show that there are ways to subtly tweak the current model that could potentially have a big impact.

Is Consciousness the Unified Field? A Field Theorist's Perspective - John Hagelin, SAND11 - YouTube

I REALLY appreciated this...
Is Consciousness the Unified Field? A Field Theorist's Perspective - John Hagelin, SAND11 - YouTube

John Hagelin, Director of the Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy Director of the Board of Advisors for the David Lynch Foundation

Progress in theoretical physics during the past decade has led to a progressively more unified understanding of the laws of nature, culminating in the recent discovery of completely unified field theories based on the superstring. These theories identify a single universal, unified field at the basis of all forms and phenomena in the universe. At the same time, cutting-edge research in the field of neuroscience has revealed the existence of a unified field of consciousness‚ a fourth major state of human consciousness, which is physiologically and subjectively distinct from waking, dreaming and deep sleep. In this meditative state, the threefold structure of waking experience‚ the observer, the observed and the process of observation‚ are united in one indivisible wholeness of pure consciousness.

These parallel discoveries of a unified field of physics and a unified field of consciousness raise fundamental questions concerning the relationship between the two. We present compelling theoretical and experimental evidence that the unified field of physics and the unified field of consciousness are identical‚ i.e. that during the meditative state, human awareness directly experiences the unified field at the foundation of the universe.

We show that the proposed identity between consciousness and the unified field may indeed be required to account for experimentally observed field effects of consciousness. We present the findings of a National Demonstration Project‚ the largest controlled sociological experiment in history‚ in which 4,000 advanced meditators markedly reduced violent crime in Washington, DC. We briefly explore the practical applications of proven meditative procedures for developing total brain functioning, higher states of consciousness‚ preventing social conflict and promoting peace on a national and global scale.

AMERICA’S TOP POWER PLANT TOXIC AIR POLLUTERS
Please take a look at these two reports outlining the state of coal power ground and water pollution in the U.S. These are brand new reports and reveal the significant ongoing need to improve the conditions at these sites!

(I'm pleased that none of the projects I worked on is in this group)
NEW REPORT: Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Texas are Top States in Terms of Toxic Power Plant Air Pollution
December 7, 2011
The dirtiest power plants in the nation continue to generate a disproportionate amount of toxic pollutants – including arsenic, chromium, hydrochloric acid, lead, mercury, nickel, and selenium – tracked in a new analysis by the Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) released today by EIP, Earthjustice, and the Sierra Club.
According to the new EIP report, the dozen dirtiest power plants in the U.S. in terms of sheer pounds of emissions of four highly toxic heavy metals – arsenic, chromium, lead, and mercury – are: (1) Plum Point Station, AR; (2) TVA’s Paradise Plant, KY; (3) Genon’s Shawville Station, PA; (4) Basin Electric’s Laramie River Station, WY; (5) Consumers Energy’s JH Campbell Plant, MI; (6) AES Puerto Rico LP, PR; (7) Edison International’s Homer City Plant, PA; (8) Consumers Energy’s De Karn/JC Weadock Generating Plant, MI; (9) FirstEnergy’s Bruce Mansfield Power Plant, PA; (10) Southern Company’s Bowen Plant, GA; (11) Basin Electric’s Antelope Valley Station, ND; and (12) Luminant’s Monticello Power Plant, TX.
Based on overall rankings for the toxic pollutants reviewed in the EIP report, the five worst states identified are (starting with the bottom-ranked states):
  • Pennsylvania (#1 rankings for arsenic and lead)
  • Ohio (#2 rankings for mercury and selenium)
  • Indiana (#4 rankings for chromium and nickel)
  • Kentucky (#2 for arsenic); and
  • Texas (#1 rankings for mercury and selenium).followed by this report which is just as important, and we need to support action to prevent any kind of ground/freshwater/ WATER pollution:

NEW REPORT: 20 Additional Toxic Coal Ash Contamination Sites Found in 10 States - "The more we look, the more we find..."
December 13, 2011
EIP has identified a total of 20 additional coal ash dump sites causing groundwater and soil contamination in 10 states – Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. These include 19 sites where coal ash appears to have contaminated groundwater with arsenic or other pollutants at levels above Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL). All but two have also measured concentrations of other pollutants – such as boron, molybdenum, and manganese – above EPA-recommended Health Advisories for children or adults. In addition, our report includes new information about 7 previously recognized damage cases, including stunning evidence of groundwater more toxic than hazardous waste leachate. Finally, we have identified soil contamination at an Indiana site where coal ash was used to fill in a rail bed. These structural fills account for most “recycling” of coal combustion waste, and are largely unregulated.
Today EIP also released a letter to Congress from thousands of residents near coal ash dump sites in 27 states pleading for proper federal oversight – even as some in Congress are urging that federal oversight to clean up toxic coal ash pollution be relaxed and authority to enforce meaningful standards be eliminated.
The Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) has been collecting evidence of groundwater contamination near coal ash ponds and landfills for several years, and the more we look, the more we find. After EPA documented 67 proven or potential ‘damage cases’ in 2007, we found groundwater or surface water contamination at 70 additional sites, and submitted our analysis to EPA in two reports released in February and August of 2010. The current report brings the total number of damage cases identified by EPA and other groups to 157.
