Harvesting H20 From Air | Earthtechling

Self-Filling Water Bottle Concept Harvests H20 From Air

by

Did you know that there are more than three quadrillion gallons of water just floating around in the air? Climate change has made it abundantly clear that water will become an even more precious resource in the coming decades. Although the freshwater rivers and lakes from which we source drinking water may dry up, scientists hope that advanced technology will allow them to harvest this atmospheric water as a new supply.
We’ve already reported on a wind turbine concept that plucks water from desert air, but that’s hardly a practical investment for your average individual. Now, new developments from a company called NBD Nano suggests this technology may be in our hands sooner than previously thought. The company has pioneered a water bottle that can refill itself with drinkable water harvested from the air.

Like many of the most innovative clean tech companies, NBD Nano’s amazing water bottle concept was inspired by Mother Nature. The company’s founders noticed that the Namib Desert Beetle is able to thrive in the extremely dry environments because it’s capable of absorbing water from the air.
“Every morning this beetle climbs to the top of a sand dune, sticks its back to the wind, and drinks 12 percent of its weight in water,” said NBD cofounder Deckard Sorensen in an interview with PRI. “We use nanotechnology to mimic this beetle’s back so that we too can pull water from the air.” In the novel design, the water bottle’s surface is coated with hydrophilic and hydrophobic coatings, and then a fan is used to pass air over the surface. The water condenses on the surface and, eventually, the water bottle refills itself. The design could operate using a rechargeable battery or solar cell to speed-up accumulation and filter the water.
Obviously, this technology could have a huge impact, especially in developing nations where other types of water filtration are hampered by a lack of infrastructure. NBD hopes to bring this off-grid water bottle to market by 2014.

Wind Turbine Plucks Clean Water From Desert Air

As climate change continues to become more apparent, scientists say we are in for lots more hot, very dry weather in some regions of the world. Since it’s highly likely that many fresh water supplies will continue to disappear, it’s essential that new water producing technologies are developed—and quickly.
Plants and animals living in the desert have evolved to utilize even tiny bits of moisture in their quest for survival. The ability to capitalize on natural condensation inspired a French technology startup to develop a wind turbine with similar traits. Eole Water is working on a wind turbine that can produce hundreds of liters of water every day, using nothing but dry desert air.

The Eole WMS 1000 wind turbine features a 13-meter diameter rotor with a 12-metric-ton nacelle housing a direct-drive permanent-magnet generator protected by sand-shutters. It starts by drawing wind through air regulators. The moisture in the air is then transformed into steam by heat from the turbine’s generator. The steam is then compressed, the moisture condenses, and the resulting water droplets flow down pipes within the turbine and into stainless steel tanks for purification. According to one report, Eole CEO Marc Parent, an engineer, got the idea for this amazing turbine back in the 1990s, when he began reducing his bottled water costs by siphoning the condensation from his air conditioner.
Early tests show that the device is capable of creating 500-800 liters of clean water every day through the process of condensation. And that’s in the arid climate of the United Arab Emirates where the prototype is being tested. Eole hopes that installing the turbine offshore or near the coast where there are higher humidity and wind conditions could produce even more

When Floodwaters Rise, Floating Solar Boats School Kids | Earthtechling

When Floodwaters Rise, Floating Solar Boats School Kids by  In most parts of the world, flooding is a rare natural disaster. But in Bangladesh, it’s an annual occurrence, as monsoon rains typically bring on such a deluge that hundreds of schools are forced to shut down. How to keep kids on track with their studies when the world is a wet, muddy mess? Non-profit organization Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha has created a solution withsolar-powered boat schools that provide education for kids year round, rain or shine.

Inhabitat reports that the organization was in fact founded for that purpose back in 2002, and now, when floodwaters inundate schools (often up to four months out of the year), children can continue their studies via these solar-powered boats, which can serve around 30 students. Of course, the model only works if kids make it to class, which we imagine can be more of a challenge during the annual deluge. To meet that challenge, the non-profit developed a unique incentive program.

Poorer Bangledeshi families tend to lack electricity, so for those students who attend class on a regular basis, Shidhulai provides small solar lanterns. These lanterns are available free of charge, and can serve the household not only by only by allowing the student to study after dark, but by allowing the adults in the household to develop crafts that will contribute to the household economy. Further family favor is curried for the non-profit’s floating classroom model by making these solar-powered boats available as workshop space for parents, with classes in agriculture, finance, health and hygiene available after school hours.

Constructed simply out of  locally-sourced natural materials, each boat is equipped with rooftop solar panels, a small library with electronic resources, and a laptop with internet connectivity.  These floating classrooms are equipped to provide for the educational needs of students up to the fourth grade level.

...such a great solution.

Finger control your gloves for touch screens...

Turn Your Favorite Mitts Into Gadget-Compatible Manipulators
Four steps to texting without freezing.

Magic Touch Greg Maxson
Winter gloves and gadgets don’t mix. Most touchscreens use capacitive sensing to complete a weak electrical circuit through skin and locate our tapping. And while wool, cotton, and leather gloves insulate hands from the cold, they block the body’s ability to shuttle electrons. Strategic stitching with conductive thread, however, can prevent essential electronics from becoming unresponsive bricks the moment you bundle up.
1. Order silver-plated nylon thread (silver conducts electricity). This can be difficult to find in stores, but major online retailers carry it.
2. Pick a pair of gloves to modify. Although leather works, it’s harder to push a needle through.
3. Stitch the figure of a star or other solid shape onto the glove’s index finger with the thread, making sure it will contact both the touchscreen and your skin.
4. Bundle up and tap away.

Re: Change is the Order of my Universe...
"I believe that the key to changing any problem (situation) is to change the beliefs that caused it originally. I am constantly learning more about beliefs and how they affect my own life – this is an ongoing process which will continue throughout my life. Using our minds to heal ourselves requires mental focus that supports, facilitates, and in some cases, activates healing. Our thoughts have been shown to alter our neurochemistry.

The placebo effect (positive outcomes from positive expectations) and nocebo effect (negative outcomes from negative expectations) are well-documented, and in some cases, have even shown more dramatic results than the so-called "active" drugs.

So with that, here are seven ways to heal with the mind:

1. Dream

I believe all change starts with a dream.

Dreaming our way to health may sound unrealistic, yet the realm of the subconscious is accessed by dreaming, and that's where a lot of our bodily functions reside.

The dreaming phase is mind-expanding, and your special way of accessing a world of imagination and possibility.

Dream your way to wellness.

2. Intention

Create a vision of healing for yourself in your mind's eye.

Visualization (guided imagery) techniques work because the mind thinks in pictures.
Intend for the healing to manifest in your life. Intention is powerful – it propels you forward in your journey, and creates a clear and powerful goal. Intention stimulates desire.

3. Desire

Sustained positive emotions are integral to healing. Desire is an emotional trigger to keep you on your journey. The stronger the desire, the more potent is the force of will that will keep you going even when times get tough.

4. Mindfulness

Mental focus removes other barriers that distract you. It brings the fullness of your energy into the present moment. Focusing your attention on one thing will enable you to bring all your resources to its achievement.

Meditate on transforming yourself via sacred healing.

To learn how to master some of the most powerful mind-healing meditation exercises, click here.

5. Believe

You can change any aspect of your health through changing your belief about it.

To stimulate healing, it helps to believe you are worthy of being healed. It's essential to believe you can be healed. What other beliefs can you create to help you to heal?

6. Hope

Hope sustains you even in the darkest hour. When it seems all is lost, we cling to hope.

7. Tap into the soul

Healing is accessing our spiritual nature, nurturing grace, and the deepest aspect of surrendering within our souls. Healing engenders peace no matter our situation – a pure acceptance of our challenges with our blessings.

Surrender to a Higher Love. Relax away all stressful thoughts and doubts.

Tap into the Universe ask it to assist you in your healing.

Call on your angels to protect you.

When we heal, a dimension is activated beyond what we can see with the eyes. It requires us to surrender what we wish to become. Our ability to heal is far beyond what most people believe. Reprogramming beliefs is a deep, constant, and mystical path requiring full immersion, dedication and commitment."

What You Don't Know About Commercial Egg Farming

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/11/21/truth-about-commercial-egg-farming.aspx

Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms is a pioneer in sustainable agriculture and has mastered the art of raising healthy, happy chickens that produce outstanding eggs. I recently visited Joel Salatin at his farm in Virginia. He practices the local, sustainable model of food production, which is in stark contrast to the more prevalent model of large-scale mass food production that's seen today. The "bigger is better" food system has reached a point where its fundamental weaknesses are becoming apparent, and foodborne disease and loss of nutrient content are just two of the most obvious consequences.    Total Video Length: 48:03

The REAL new tax table...

Dave Weigel complains today that too many rich people have no idea how income taxes work. They've heard that Obama wants to raise tax rates on people who make more than $250,000, so they're working on ways to keep their income right at $249,000. After all, if they go over the threshold, they'd suddenly have to pay the higher rate, and it would be a net loss.
This isn't true, of course. Obama is only proposing to raise tax rates on income over $250,000, so if your income goes up to $251,000, you only pay the higher rate on the extra $1,000. The tax bill on your first $250,000 stays exactly the same.
But that's hard to explain, and we're all about solutions here, not petty griping. So I have the answer: an EZ-to-Read table that compares total taxes paid under the old Bush rates and the proposed Obama rates. It starts at $241,900 because that's $250,000 minus the standard deduction, and it's for married couples filing jointly.
Example: under the current Bush tax rates, a couple making $300,000 pays $75,802, or 25.27% of their total income. Under Obama's plan, the rate goes up on the amount over $241,900, so they pay a whopping $2,000 more, or 25.85% of total income. Millionaires will pay $32,000 more. Raw data here. Share this with all your rich friends!

How To Prepare A Non-GMO Thanksgiving Feast [Infographic] | Care2 Healthy Living

How To Prepare A Non-GMO Thanksgiving Feast [Infographic]

Thanksgiving holiday is almost here. Although eating an enormous amount of food seems to be the tradition no matter what holiday we’re celebrating, Thanksgiving certainly earns the award for most food-centric of all our seasonal soirees.
The problem is that many of the traditional Thanksgiving foods are no longer the innocent treats they once were. Almost every crop and brand has been infiltrated by genetically modified organism (GMOs). Things are more complicated because, thanks to the lobbying efforts of biotech companies like Monsanto, GMOs remain completely unlabeled in America. Buying certified organic alternatives can help reduce the chance that you’ll serve up unwanted GMOs, but it’s not always a budget-friendly option.
This handy infographic, created by the Non-GMO Project, helps spotlight traditional dishes that present a high risk for GMO contamination. Use your grocery dollars wisely by choosing organic or locally-produced alternatives for these ingredients, and save on conventional versions that present a low GMO risk.

Benefits of drinking Tea..... so ooooolong!

An Ancient Powerful Beverage for Daily Health

For thousands of years, many cultures have used the health benefits of tea in all aspects of their daily life.
Produced from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis, tea is one of the most popular beverages on the planet – second only to water in consumption. Every country in the world drinks tea in one form or another.
Skin care companies tout the anti-aging qualities of tea, adding extracts of various teas to skin creams, soaps and moisturizers.
It has been used as an effective home health remedy for generations to soothe indigestion and calm diarrhea.
health benefits of tea
Tea fosters a calm mood while simultaneously revitalizing your brain’s ability to focus and think clearly.
Drinking tea daily can provide a myriad of health benefits and protect you against some of the most debilitating diseases known.

Common Types of Teas Which Provide Uncommon Health Benefits

Green Tea (Most popular: Japanese, Chinese, Ceylon and Kahwah) has far more proven health benefits than other teas do because it has garnered the most research. It is the most popular tea consumed in Japan and China.
Harvard Women’s Health Watch published their findings on the powerful antioxidant benefits of the flavonoids – primarily catechins, also known as ECGC – found in green tea.
They found that these compounds aid in weight loss, prevent DNA damage, lessen brain damage after a stroke and reduce the risk of cancer.
Black Tea (Most popular: Assam, Nepal, Darjeeling and Nilgiri ) is the most common tea, accounting for 75% of all tea consumed around the world.
The Journal of Food Science noted that black tea has the highest concentration of polysaccharides – carbohydrates that prevent glucose absorption; making it the most effective for diabetics.
White Tea (Most popular: Silver Needle, White Peony, Long Life Eyebrow and Tribute Eyebrow ) has a milder taste than green or black tea, has less adverse effects – even when you drink as many as five cups a day – and is now widely available.
A staple in Eastern households for more than a thousand years, white tea is gaining popularity in the Western world. A study by Beiersdorf AG found that white tea extracts not only prevented fat absorption, but also broke down the fat of lab-created human fat cells.
Because white tea is rare and more expensive than other teas, it may not be a first choice for avid tea drinkers.
Additionally, research is limited on this variety of tea but initial results show it may just surpass the recognized cancer-fighting benefits of green tea.
Oolong Tea (Most popular: Darjeeling, Assam, Vietnamese and Thai ) is processed differently than green or black tea.
It’s less oxidized than black tea, which gives it an increased concentration of polyphenols, that can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and help lower blood sugar levels.
Oolong tea has even proven effective in preventing oral bacteria according to the Department of Dentistry at Osaka University in Japan.

Top 7 Health Benefits of Tea

1.Fights Cancer: The antioxidants in tea kill cancer without damaging the surrounding cells. The polyphenols found in all tea varieties have some of the highest free radical scavenging ability, (free radicals promote oxidation, which scientists now believe causes cancer). Studies have focused on black and green tea as the most prolific teas consumed.
2. Accelerates Weight Loss: High concentrations of the aflavins and the arubigins fight the absorption of fat in rats fed a diet high in fat. Green and Oolong teas also boost your metabolism and naturally increase your energy levels.
3. Boosts Immunity: Tea is both antiviral and antibacterial due to compounds known as alkylamines. These antigens “prime” the immune system, which boosts the body’s immune response 5-fold.
4. Prevents Heart Disease: Tea reduces your risk of high blood pressure, prevents blood clots and keeps blood vessels relaxed. One study in Europe showed that one cup of tea each day could reduce the risk of heart attack by 50%!
5. Strengthen Nervous System: Tea polyphenols stimulate the nervous system and increase brain alertness. They also protect brain cells and slow deterioration caused by neuro-degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Unlike higher caffeine beverages, tea stimulates brain function without causing stress to the heart.
6. Lowers Diabetes: Research compiled by the Leibniz Center for Diabetes Research at Heinrich Heine University Duesseldorf, Germany found that consuming four cups of tea each day reduces your risk of developing type II diabetes by 20%. Tea also regulates glucose levels, allowing the body to absorb sugar more slowly.
7. Increases Bone Density: Scientific studies done at the University of Cambridge School of Medicine showed that tea drinkers have 5% stronger bones than non-tea drinkers. While coffee seems to weaken bone density, the flavonoids in tea counteract the caffeine and strengthen it.

Which Is Better? Bottled Tea vs Fresh Tea

The American Chemical Society (ACS) found that bottled teas boasting “antioxidant protection” on their labels may contain less polyphenols than a cup of green or black tea brewed at home.
Enjoy the health benefits of a cup of tea daily
The antioxidant power of a single, 8 ounce cup of home-brewed tea can range from 50-150mg. The six bottled brands studied ranged from 3mg to 81mg of polyphenols per 16-ounce bottle.
Shiming Li, Ph.D., explained, “There is a huge gap between the perception that tea consumption is healthy and the actual amount of the healthful nutrients — polyphenols — found in bottled tea beverages. Our analysis of tea beverages found that the polyphenol content is extremely low.”
Adding in high amounts of sugar and other additives further reduces the health benefits of bottled tea.
Tea made at home costs just a few cents, compared to bottled teas that can cost two dollars or more. In the United States, bottled beverages generate approximately one billion dollars in sales annually.
Tea sales – both bottled and fresh – have risen in recent years due to promising research in the scientific community. Polyphenol-abundant tea has been linked to reducing the risks of heart disease and obesity.
The health benefits of tea are not new. However, as more extensive research is done, we will likely find ever more reason to relax with a cup of tea.

"Veggie" burgers....don't do That!

  • Neurotoxins & Carcinogens – The majority of store-bought veggie burgers contain some form of soy. Non organic soy is extracted using hexane, a chemical byproduct of petroleum refining. The food industry uses the hexane extraction method because it is cheap. Several studies have been published about the neurotoxicity of exposure of humans and animals to hexane, but the most alarming ones link exposure to brain tumors. Currently the FDA sets no limit to the amount of hexane that can be used in non-organic soy products and no one knows for sure how much residue is being consumed by the American public. If you want more info on this – the Cornucopia Institute released an excellent report about several popular veggie burger brands that use hexane. To quote top researcher Charlotte Valleys, “The bigger picture here is that hexane is being released into the atmosphere—since it’s an air pollutant. It leads to smog, which is ground-level ozone, which leads to a whole bunch of health problems, like asthma in kids. These effects are very real.”
I don’t want this in my body or in the air I breathe – do you?
Table meat v11
*Image taken from Cornucopia Institute’s report on hexane in soy
  • Cheap Oils – If you see the words “canola oil, soy oil, corn oil, sunflower, and/or safflower oil” it is likely extracted with hexane too. But what further complicates this matter (if having a neurotoxin byproduct in your burger is not enough) is that the overconsumption of these cheap oils are causing an abundance of Omega 6 fatty acids in our diets. The imbalance of Omega 6 fatty acids increases the risk of inflammation, heart disease, obesity, and prostate and bone cancer.Traderjoes
  • Textured Vegetable Protein, aka “TVP” – Several frozen veggie burgers available are developed using soy products and Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP). TVP is one of those foods I avoid at all costs and no one will ever convince me to eat something this processed. TVP is extracted from soy at a super high heat and made into a powder before it is “reshaped” into strips, chunks and granules and put back into food. The processing can also add artificial and natural flavors, MSG, colorings, emulsifiers and thickening agents, including nitrosamine, which is a carcinogen no one should be consuming. Does this picture of TVP look like nutritious nuggets of real food to you?
Textured Vegetable Protein TVP YL03
  • Chemically Altered Flavorings & MSG – There are several hidden sources of MSG found in vegetarian meat substitutes. The food industry uses MSG to make processed food that is low in nutrition taste good, tricking your taste buds into liking something that isn’t real food. Futhermore, MSG increases your insulin response, tricking your body into thinking you can eat more than you actually should. And this is exactly how scientists make rats obese, by feeding them MSG laced food. I don’t know about you, but knowing there is a potential substance that can trick me into eating more food is reason enough to avoid this at all costs. But MSG is linked to all sorts of terrible reactions in humans like migraines, toxicity, and autoimmune disorders that you can read about in this tell all book about MSG.
Screen Shot 2012 02 06 at 1 05 40 PM
  • Full of Genetically Modified Ingredients (GMOs) – If the burger contains anything derived from corn or soy, you can almost guarantee it comes from genetically modified seeds unless it is certified 100% organic. Genetically modified foods have been linked to toxicity, allergic reactions and fertility issues and have not been studied for their long term effects on our health. Unfortunately, here in the US, companies can get away with including GMOs in our foods without us knowing it. If you want to know if GMO’s are in your food – support theJust Label It.org by signing their petition to the FDA
MorningStarFarmsSpicyBlackBeanVeggieBurgers 345Screen Shot 2012 06 28 at 8 28 21 AM
The Morningstar Farms Black Bean Burger, along with several other brands are guilty of every one of these points above. This burger is marketed as “healthy” and has even more questionable ingredients like caramel coloring (which is linked to cancer) and a slew of other chemical based preservatives. Knowing that I used to eat this particular brand many years ago on a weekly basis, absolutely disgusts me now. I don’t know about you, but I am tired of processed and convenience foods making a fool out of me…share this info with all your veggie burger buying friends and spread the word.

Housing.....LosingGround

the problem is getting worse. Housing and transportation costs rose faster than income during the 2000s, increasing the burden that these costs placed on already stretched budgets. This held true for each of the 25 largest metropolitan areas, though the disparity was greater

in some areas than others. For all households, including homeowners who have paid off their mortgage, housing and transportation together consumed an average of 48 percent of the median household's income by decade's end.

Moderate-income households pay a disproportionate share.

For households earning 50 to 100 percent of the median income of their metropolitan area, nearly three-fifths (59 percent) of income goes to housing and transportation costs. For these households, the growing costs of place1 are particularly burdensome, leaving relatively little

left over for expenses such as food, education, and health care, not to mention savings.

the combined burden of housing and transportation costs is greatest where costs are out of sync with local incomes; these are not always the places with the highest absolute costs.
In some metro areas, such as Washington, DC, Boston, and San Francisco, high costs are matched by relatively high incomes, helping moderate- income households better afford their housing and transportation costs. But other regions, such as Riverside-San Bernardino, CA, Miami, and Los Angeles, have moderate or even high housing and transportation costs in spite of relatively low median incomes. In these metro areas, combined cost burdens for moderate-income households are very high, with average burdens ranging from 65 to 72 percent of household income.
