Your Life in a Backpack: What to Pack For 6 Months Traveling Abroad | Norm Schriever

Your Life in a Backpack: What to Pack For 6 Months Traveling Abroad

Think back to your last vacation. I bet your suitcases were so stuffed you had to sit on them just to get the zipper closed, and that was just for one week! Now imagine if you had to pack absolutely everything you needed for six months on the road, or even a year, and it all had to fit into one big backpack! That's the challenge I face every time I head overseas for a live-in excursion to places like Costa Rica, Nicaragua, or even on a walkabout around the world for a year. Hell no, I'm not complaining -- I get live in the tropics like a beach bum and write my heart out, but packing every single possession I'll need in a bag no bigger than a laundry sack becomes a Divinci-esque feat of science.

In a few weeks I'll be at the airport once again, this time with a one-way ticket to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand for an undetermined amount of time, where I'll write, volunteer, and attempt to surf as I go. So after painstaking consideration, this is what I packed:

2013-08-01-images.jpgThe North Face Base Camp duffel bag/backpack.
It's hard to find a backpack big enough to accommodate everything you need for a prolonged stay. Most mountaineering and hiking bags are only in the 3,500-4,500 cubic inch range, but the North Face makes an oversized duffel bag/backpack that holds about 8,000 cubic inches. It's super durable and very roomy, with padded shoulder straps so I can throw it on like a backpack when needed. I haul it around bus stations and airports a lot more than actual wilderness excursions, so that works great.

Day pack.
I bring a regular-sized backpack to carry my laptop around, head to the beach, or take plenty of day trips. I use this smaller pack all day, every day so for this trip I chose a O'Neill Suburbia backpack because it has a laptop compartment, water bottle holder, and comfortable shoulder straps.

Clothing:

1 Pair lightweight jeans.

Flip flops.
I bring one good pair and one pair that can get wet for the beach. Reef makes some cool new flip flops that have a compartment in the sole so you can hide money or your room key. Genius!

1 Pair slip-on shoes:
Something light, breathable, and easy to slip on is fantastic in hot, beachy climates. I like my classic Vans, and Crocs makes some cool new waterproof shoes in funky designs that are much cleaner and safer because of their plastic soles.

Running sneakers.
A pair of running sneaks for working out, hiking, or if I have a big day sight seeing.

7 Tank tops.
When I first started traveling I brought too many t-shirts, but soon realized I wanted something as light and airy as possible in tropical climates, so now I load up on tank tops.

7 T-shirts.
I try to find the ones that aren't pure cotton, which is heavier and doesn't breathe when you sweat. One by one I cut the sleeves off my t-shirts, anyway!

3 Collared shirts.
I fit in a few short sleeve button-up shirt for those nights on the town or nicer dinners.

2013-08-01-935333100.jpg3 O'Neill Hybrid shorts/swim suits.
I used to pack several swim shorts and also bring a few pairs of normal cotton shorts, but Hybrid shorts changed that. They're made of comfortable, breathable quick-drying material that can get wet, but look like nice dress shorts. They're the best invention for travelers because you only have to pack half as much but can throw them on no matter if you're going to work out, sweat, jump in the ocean, or just walk around town. I love the ones by O'Neill, which fit great and come in plenty of cool patterns.

4 Athletic shorts.

1 Baseball hat.
(Philadelphia Phillies, of course!)

1 Fisherman hat.
I look goofy as Gilligan in it, but a big hat is your best friend on the beach at midday or in direct sun, where it's easy to get heat stroke.

Socks and underwear.
(Not that I'm going to wear either of them.)

Sunglasses.
I wear sunglasses most of the day when I'm outdoors, but I always seem to break or lose them, so I get a decent pair only in the $25 range. The good news is you can buy cheap sunglasses anywhere you go on the beach. I also bring a little cord to keep them on my head in case I'm kayaking or zip lining or doing something where they might fly off.

1 Comfy hooded sweatshirt.
A warm hoodie is essential for cold airplane rides, early morning trips on the water, or some nights as your only pillow and blanket!

Lycra long sleeve shirt.

Technology:

2013-08-01-photo.JPGMacBook laptop.
I live on my MacBook as I travel, using it to write, work, stay in touch with family and friends, and even watch TV and movies. I wish I had a MacBook Air, which is super lightweight, but mine works fine for now. I put a cheap plastic cover on it to protect it from moisture and scratches, and throw up cool stickers of places I've been and brands I love, badges of identity to other travelers.

Kindle.
I love the feel of a real book, but while on the road it's almost impossible to buy books and I definitely don't want to carry them around, so any eBook reader is convenient.

Travel adapter.
I bought one for $20 that lets me plug in my electronics in almost any country, and also acts as a surge protector for those frequent power outages.

2013-08-01-ScreenShot20130731at7.14.21PM.pngGoPro Hero 3 Black camera.
I recently converted from my jenky digital camera to a super fun Go Pro. It's smaller than a deck of cards, has huge storage capacity and battery life, and fits into a shockproof case so I can take it over rough terrain or underwater. I can strap it to a surfboard, bicycle handlebars, or on a headgear clip while I'm getting my ass kicked in the boxing gym. I have a wifi remote so I can document the wonderment of traveling abroad in movie quality without holding a camera up to my eyes all the time, and I plan to expand my travel bog to a more-entertaining video blog.

iPhone.
Whenever I hit the road I suspend my US cell service for $10 a month, forwarding my number to Skype or GoogleVoice, but I still use my iPhone as a mini computer via local wifi, accessing apps that allow me to make calls, use GPS, a compass, translate languages on the fly, and serve as a killer flashlight.

Flash drives.
I'm paranoid about getting my laptop ruined or stolen and losing all of my data, so I back up daily on high-memory flash drives and hide them someplace safe.

2013-08-01-opplanetgoalzeroswitch8solarrechargingkit.jpg
GoalZero portable solar charger.
GoalZero, one of my new favorite companies, makes the Nomad 7, a portable solar charger that's no bigger than a notebook. It unfolds into two panels that catch the sun and recharge my phone, GPS, camera, or MP3 player with a simple USB hookup. A separate recharger battery the size of a tube of toothpaste, the Switch 8, can be thrown into my backpack and gives my devices plenty of juice in case of an emergency or if I'm stuck out in the jungle. When that happens, and it will happen, a quick solar charge can literally be a life saver.

GoalZero portable speaker.
I listen to music 24/7 and the speakers on my laptop don't cut it. But most mini speakers sounded like trash until I finally found a good one that is affordable and durable, with 20 hours of battery life, the RockOut 2 speaker by GoalZero. They come with a built in durable case and you can power them via your laptop, charge their internal battery, or even go solar.

2 Headphones.
One pair of earbuds and one over-the-head pair for jogging.

I bring a Tupperwear container to store my electronic accessories and twist ties to organize their cords and cables.

Work out:
I get back to basics on the road: pushups, burpees, etc., but I do bring a jump rope and a stretchy fitness band, which take up almost no room but are versatile for any-time workouts. Gymnastic rings also are easy to hook up anywhere for strength and balance conditioning.

I have an incredible trainer, Trevor Gibbs at Health Behaviors, who sets my workout plan virtually based on my natural elements, no matter where I am in the world!

Swim goggles.

Brita filtered water bottle.
I hate plastic water bottles, and you should too!

Small gym towels.
I carry a little towel around with me everywhere I go to wipe the sweat away, dash through a rain storm, or even dry off after a dip in the ocean. These are great because it's always super hot in the tropics and I sweat like... well, like a gringo in the tropics. I used to "borrow them permanently" from hotels, but I've since reformed and now I buy a pack.

Security:

Combo lock.
Once I settle down and get an apartment overseas I bolt a solid combo lock onto a railing or post near my front door and put my house key in it. That way I never have to carry around my key (a pain if you're living near the beach) but I can get in any time.

I should use a laptop cable lock, but I prefer just to hide it in a ceiling panel or the bottom of the garbage can when I leave my hotel or apartment.

Likewise, instead of fancy false-bottom containers and security devices, I just hide my important stuff -- passport, credit cards, flash drive, etc. in the bottom of a cereal box or hollowed-out can of peanuts.

Instead of wearing those dorky tourist money belts I just put money in the sole of my shoe.

Copies of travel papers.
I make copies of my passport, drivers license, and medical immunization card and keep them in a safe place. I also email photos of those to myself, along with credit card and bank information.

Toiletries and Medical:

Sanitizing toothbrush case.
Sanitation is always a question mark in third-world hotel bathrooms and hot, humid climates, a breeding ground for bacteria, so I bring the million germ eliminating travel toothbrush sanitizer by Violight. The case sanitizes 99 percent of germs and the battery lasts 2,000 hours! I found it in Hammacher & Schlemmer's catalog on the airplane.

I carry around a Z Pack of antibiotics in case of severe stomach sickness, and a course of anti-malarial meds if I'm going deep into the jungle.

A few packs of Emergen-C's come with me to so I don't get sick with all that nasty fake air on the plane or when I'm fighting off exotic germs in my new locale.

I bring travel size toiletries on the plane to last a few days, but deodorant, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc. I buy when I get there.

Other:

5 Copies of my own books.
Even though they are heavy, I schlep a few copies of the books I've written. Not only is it cool to lend them to fellow travelers, but I've traded copies for meals or even a night's stay in a hostel in a pinch!

Compression bags.
I found a cheap set that I stuffed my clothes into then rolled the air out of vents on the other side and sealed shut. These bags reduce the volume of my clothes by 30 percent and keep everything dry.

Dryer sheets.
Stuffed into my bag keep everything smelling fresh.

Twine.
It's easy to set up a drying line anywhere I go.

Deck of cards.

Small notebook.
That I can fit in my back pocket and write whenever inspiration hits. Some times you have to go old school!

Canadian flag patch.
I sew that onto my backpack so foreigners don't assume I'm from the U.S. and target me for political admonishment, theft... or worse.

Neck pillow:
For long flights (it's 18 hours to Vietnam from California) a neck pillow is essential, though I usually give it away once I get there so I don't have to carry it around.

Hair clippers:
A haircut might only cost $2, but finding a barber shop in every little beach town and rural hamlet is problematic. I keep my hair shaved short so I just bring my own cheap clippers.

Honey Eaters Beware! | John Douillard's LifeSpa

Honey Eaters Beware!

honey eaters beware plastic honey bear imageAccording to a recent report from the Food Safety News group, more than three-fourths of the honey sold in U.S. grocery stores isn't honey.

Here's the deal: standard processing of honey involves removing the pollen, meaning that most commercial sources have had all of the pollen removed.

In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration states that any product that's been ultra-filtered and no longer contains pollen isn't honey.

Ultra-filtering is a process whereby the honey is heated, watered down and then forced through a very small filter under high pressure to remove the pollen. Who knows what happens to the good microbes in honey during this process.

Food Safety News purchased more than 60 jars, jugs and plastic bears of honey in 10 states and the District of Columbia and tested them for pollen.

They found that:

  • 76% of the samples bought at big-name groceries had all the pollen removed. These were stores like TOP Food & Drug, Safeway, Giant Eagle, QFC, Kroger, Metro Market, Harris Teeter, A&P, Stop & Shop and King Soopers.
  • 100% of the samples from drugstores like Walgreens, Rite-Aid and CVS Pharmacy had no pollen.
  • 77% of the samples from big box stores like Costco, Sam's Club, Walmart, Target and H-E-B had the pollen filtered out.
  • 100% of the samples from small individual service portions from Smucker's, McDonald's and KFC had the pollen removed.

Ayurvedic Honey

Ayurveda suggests to eat only raw, unfiltered, uncooked honey. It is said that if honey is raw it can scrub impurities from the body. Once it is heated, it changes its properties and becomes an indigestible, toxic substance Ayurveda calls ama.

Beekeepers routinely spray diluted raw honey on the hive to calm the bees before managing the hive. Interestingly, in one report, when bee keepers sprayed cooked and filtered honey on the hive within 20 minutes a significant number of the bees sprayed were dead. While this was not a scientific study, it does allude to the drastic alteration that occurs in the processing of honey and concurrent removing of pollen.

How to Find Your Purpose and Do What You Love | Brain Pickings

How to Find Your Purpose and Do What You Love

by

Why prestige is the enemy of passion, or how to master the balance of setting boundaries and making friends.

"Find something more important than you are," philosopher Dan Dennett once said in discussing the secret of happiness, "and dedicate your life to it." But how, exactly, do we find that? Surely, it isn't by luck. I myself am a firm believer in the power of curiosity and choice as the engine of fulfillment, but precisely how you arrive at your true calling is an intricate and highly individual dance of discovery. Still, there are certain factors — certain choices — that make it easier. Gathered here are insights from seven thinkers who have contemplated the art-science of making your life's calling a living.

PAUL GRAHAM ON HOW TO DO WHAT YOU LOVE

Every few months, I rediscover and redevour Y-Combinator founder Paul Graham's fantastic 2006 article, How to Do What You Love. It's brilliant in its entirety, but the part I find of especial importance and urgency is his meditation on social validation and the false merit metric of "prestige":

What you should not do, I think, is worry about the opinion of anyone beyond your friends. You shouldn't worry about prestige. Prestige is the opinion of the rest of the world.

Prestige is like a powerful magnet that warps even your beliefs about what you enjoy. It causes you to work not on what you like, but what you'd like to like.

Prestige is just fossilized inspiration. If you do anything well enough, you'll make it prestigious. Plenty of things we now consider prestigious were anything but at first. Jazz comes to mind—though almost any established art form would do. So just do what you like, and let prestige take care of itself.

Prestige is especially dangerous to the ambitious. If you want to make ambitious people waste their time on errands, the way to do it is to bait the hook with prestige. That's the recipe for getting people to give talks, write forewords, serve on committees, be department heads, and so on. It might be a good rule simply to avoid any prestigious task. If it didn't suck, they wouldn't have had to make it prestigious."

More of Graham's wisdom on how to find meaning and make wealth can be found in Hackers & Painters: Big Ideas from the Computer Age.

ALAIN DE BOTTON ON SUCCESS

Alain de Botton, modern philosopher and creator of the "literary self-help genre", is a keen observer of the paradoxes and delusions of our cultural conceits.

In The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work, he takes his singular lens of wit and wisdom to the modern workplace and the ideological fallacies of "success."

His terrific 2009 TED talk offers a taste:

One of the interesting things about success is that we think we know what it means. A lot of the time our ideas about what it would mean to live successfully are not our own. They're sucked in from other people. And we also suck in messages from everything from the television to advertising to marketing, etcetera. These are hugely powerful forces that define what we want and how we view ourselves. What I want to argue for is not that we should give up on our ideas of success, but that we should make sure that they are our own. We should focus in on our ideas and make sure that we own them, that we're truly the authors of our own ambitions. Because it's bad enough not getting what you want, but it's even worse to have an idea of what it is you want and find out at the end of the journey that it isn't, in fact, what you wanted all along."

HUGH MACLEOD ON SETTING BOUNDARIES

Cartoonist Hugh MacLeod is as well-known for his irreverent doodles as he is for his opinionated musings on creativity, culture, and the meaning of life. In Ignore Everybody: and 39 Other Keys to Creativity, he gathers his most astute advice on the creative life. Particularly resonant with my own beliefs about the importance of choices is this insight about setting boundaries:

16. The most important thing a creative person can learn professionally is where to draw the red line that separates what you are willing to do, and what you are not.

Art suffers the moment other people start paying for it. The more you need the money, the more people will tell you what to do. The less control you will have. The more bullshit you will have to swallow. The less joy it will bring. Know this and plan accordingly."

Later, MacLeod echoes Graham's point about prestige above:

28. The best way to get approval is not to need it.

This is equally true in art and business. And love. And sex. And just about everything else worth having."

LEWIS HYDE ON WORK VS. LABOR

After last year's omnibus of 5 timeless books on fear and the creative process, a number of readers rightfully suggested an addition: Lewis Hyde's 1979 classic, The Gift: Creativity and the Artist in the Modern World, of which David Foster Wallace famously said, "No one who is invested in any kind of art can read The Gift and remain unchanged."

In this excerpt, originally featured here in January, Hyde articulates the essential difference between work and creative labor, understanding which takes us a little closer to the holy grail of vocational fulfillment:

Work is what we do by the hour. It begins and, if possible, we do it for money. Welding car bodies on an assembly line is work; washing dishes, computing taxes, walking the rounds in a psychiatric ward, picking asparagus — these are work. Labor, on the other hand, sets its own pace. We may get paid for it, but it's harder to quantify… Writing a poem, raising a child, developing a new calculus, resolving a neurosis, invention in all forms — these are labors.

Work is an intended activity that is accomplished through the will. A labor can be intended but only to the extent of doing the groundwork, or of not doing things that would clearly prevent the labor. Beyond that, labor has its own schedule.

…

There is no technology, no time-saving device that can alter the rhythms of creative labor. When the worth of labor is expressed in terms of exchange value, therefore, creativity is automatically devalued every time there is an advance in the technology of work."

Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has a term for the quality that sets labor apart from work: flow — a kind of intense focus and crisp sense of clarity where you forget yourself, lose track of time, and feel like you're part of something larger. If you've ever pulled an all-nighter for a pet project, or even spent 20 consecutive hours composing a love letter, you've experienced flow and you know creative labor.

STEVE JOBS ON NOT SETTLING

In his now-legendary 2005 Stanford commencement address, an absolute treasure in its entirety, Steve Jobs makes an eloquent case for not settling in the quest for finding your calling — a case that rests largely on his insistence upon the power of intuition:

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle."

ROBERT KRULWICH ON FRIENDS

Robert Krulwich, co-producer of WNYC's fantastic Radiolab, author of the ever-illuminating Krulwich Wonders and winner of a Peabody Award for broadcast excellence, is one of the finest journalists working today. In another great commencement address, he articulates the infinitely important social aspect of loving what you do — a kind of social connectedness far more meaningful and genuine than those notions of prestige and peer validation.

You will build a body of work, but you will also build a body of affection, with the people you've helped who've helped you back. This is the era of Friends in Low Places. The ones you meet now, who will notice you, challenge you, work with you, and watch your back. Maybe they will be your strength.

…

If you can… fall in love, with the work, with people you work with, with your dreams and their dreams. Whatever it was that got you to this school, don't let it go. Whatever kept you here, don't let that go. Believe in your friends. Believe that what you and your friends have to say… that the way you're saying it — is something new in the world."

THE HOLSTEE MANIFESTO

You might recall The Holstee Manifesto as one of our 5 favorite manifestos for the creative life, an eloquent and beautifully written love letter to the life of purpose. (So beloved is the manifesto around here that it has earned itself a permanent spot in the Brain Pickings sidebar, a daily reminder to both myself and you, dear reader, of what matters most.)

This is your life. Do what you love, and do it often. If you don't like something, change it. If you don't like your job, quit. If you don't have enough time, stop watching TV. If you are looking for the love of your life, stop; they will be waiting for you when you start doing things you love."

The Holstee Manifesto is now available as a beautiful letterpress print, a 5×7 greeting card printed on handmade paper derived from 50% elephant poo and 50% recycled paper, and even a baby bib — because it's never too early to instill the values of living from passion.

The Blood Sugar Solution DVD - The 60-Minute Program For Losing Weight, Preventing Disease, and Feeling Great Now!

Turn the Tables on Diabesity—America's Epidemic Silent Killer—and… Melt Away the Pounds Like Your Life Depends On It!

Tick tick tick tick…

There's a hidden time bomb inside 1 of 2 Americans today, and most of these people, including you, won't know it until it explodes into full-blown diabetes or worse.

Are you one of them?

If you have weight problems… faltering energy … roller-coaster moods … poor resistance to illness … elevated blood sugar … — the answer is almost certainly "yes."

Let me explain — This condition is called diabesity, a term used to describe the full spectrum of metabolic dysfunction that begins with elevated blood sugar and mild insulin resistance. Over time it grows progressively worse until the day your doctor says, yes, you have full-blown diabetes.

But there's good news too. Keep reading and you'll learn about a simple, natural program that lets you defuse this life-threatening condition safely and completely.

It's so effective that I've actually reversed diabetes hundreds of times using the very same principles and steps. Now I'll share them with you on The Blood Sugar Solution DVD, so that you, too, can:

  • Lose pounds on top of pounds until you reach your ideal weight
  • Enjoy perfectly healthy blood sugar, now and for the rest of your life
  • Experience surging health and energy that make you feel younger by the day
  • Say goodbye to nagging illnesses caused by blood sugar disorders
  • And most important of all if you're overweight or fighting high blood sugar, you'll step off the deadly path to diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's, and cancer, and blaze a new trail to vibrant health instead.

I Want You to Be CEO of Your Health,
and I'll Show You How

Hi, my name is Dr. Mark Hyman. I'm Founder and Medical Director of The UltraWellness Center in Massachusetts and author of The Blood Sugar Solution, the #1 New York Times and Amazon.com bestseller.

If you struggle with weight, high blood sugar, or type 2 diabetes, then my simple program could make the difference between living a long, healthy life or suffering a tragically premature death.

The choice really can be yours. Don't let high blood sugar make the choice for you.

Fact is, we are in the grips of the worst unrecognized epidemic the world has ever known. It affects over 150 million Americans, and 90% of these people will go undiagnosed until their condition becomes grave.

The Disease is Called Diabesity,
and It's Exactly What it Sounds Like.

This metabolic disorder begins with mild insulin resistance that won't be detected by a typical blood sugar test. It then progresses to more obvious stages: elevated blood sugar, weight gain, prediabetes, and ultimately type 2 diabetes with all its deadly consequences.

Being anywhere on that spectrum means you already have diabesity, and believe me — it's the mother of all ticking time bombs.

Diabesity is the #1 cause of type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer, stroke, and dementia in the United States. Yet most doctors still don't know how to properly diagnose and treat it.

Incredibly, there are no national screening guidelines to catch diabesity in its early stages, even though insulin resistance is directly responsible for our skyrocketing diabetes rates and millions of premature deaths every year.

At Last, A Healthy Solution Has Arrived. No Drugs, No Shots!

In my DVD presentation, I'll show you how to diagnose and fix diabesity so that you'll feel better fast and maintain your good health for a lifetime. If you can spare 60 minutes, you'll learn everything you need to start your healthy new life.

It doesn't matter if diabetes runs in your family. You can beat it.

Truth is, the insulin resistance at the root of weight gain and diabetes is almost 100% preventable and curable no matter what your family history.

Your genes may load the gun, but it's the environment that pulls the trigger — and you have full control over that part of the equation. That means you can melt away the pounds and enjoy renewed vitality at any age with The Blood Sugar Solution:

… Even if you've been fighting weight and blood sugar problems for decades

… Even if you've tried every diet under the sun without success

… And even if you're already on insulin or drugs for high blood sugar, diabetes, cholesterol, high blood pressure, depression, and other diabesity-triggered conditions.

All it takes is your commitment to getting better with the knowledge you're about to learn. And here's more incentive to begin…

Success Comes Quickly,
In Days, Not Months

The secret to The Blood Sugar Solution lies with its breakthrough Functional Medicine approach to treating diabesity. This systems-based plan works by identifying and fixing the underlying causes of your blood sugar dysfunction, instead of treating the symptoms with prescription drugs that merely paper over the problem.

That's what makes The Blood Sugar Solution so different from any other approach you've tried before. It actually corrects the imbalances that are driving your runaway blood sugar and weight.

The rationale is simple: when you restore balance to the key areas of your biology, great health happens. Best of all, it doesn't take long for results to appear.

Blood sugar normalizes. Fat burns off. Energy returns. Illnesses fade. Spirits improve.

And it really works. As one patient said to me, "Dr. Hyman, I didn't know I felt so bad until I started to feel so good!" You could be the next!

I Expose the Myths
That Keep You Trapped in Diabesity's Grip

This one-hour Blood Sugar Solution presentation gives you the facts about diabesity together with the easy-to-follow steps and rules you'll need to turn your health around.

There's a lot of material to digest, but it all fits in one hour because the essentials of reversing blood sugar problems are really that simple.

First, I expose the biggest myths that keep you overweight and sick.

These misconceptions would make anyone feel powerless, so it's no wonder so many people just give up and accept their poor health, or get trapped on the pharmaceutical treadmill and keep getting worse.

I take these myths apart, one by one, because it's time you learned the truth: lifelong diabesity is NOT your destiny; you can readily and naturally beat it on your own.

Once you understand why diabesity has become such an epidemic, you can turn the tables on it. And your journey to health begins with…

The Four Building Blocks of Healthy Balance

You'll discover that it's not difficult to build a powerful foundation of health by following a few basic guidelines that I map out for you. These four key steps include:

  1. Boost Your Nutrition. What you put at the end of your fork is much more powerful than anything you'll find at the bottom of a pill bottle, because food triggers your genes into action, for good and for bad.

Unhealthy foods activate "bad" genes that make you grow fat and sick, while the right foods turn on "good" genes that will make you healthy again. This is a critical point to remember because the Standard American Diet (SAD) is by far the leading cause of diabesity, thanks to three huge dietary shifts that have literally "turned on" the obesity-driving genes in our bodies.

I identify these 3 disease-causing triggers and show you where they're hidden in your diet today. You'll learn what foods work like medicine to activate health-restoring genes, plus get advice on supplements to prevent deficiencies linked with diabesity.

  2. Boost Your Hormones. Diabesity is not just about insulin. Your full ensemble of hormones play a role in blood sugar metabolism, particularly sex hormones and stress hormones, and they all must work together in balance.

You'll learn the keys to keeping key hormones in balance with each other. This will promote healthier blood sugar metabolism and better overall health, too.

  3. Reduce Chronic Inflammation. Did you know that people with high inflammation are 17 times more likely to develop diabetes? Chronic inflammation is a smoldering fire that triggers insulin resistance, which in turn creates more inflammation. Ultimately the whole biological house burns down.

I tell you about the biggest and most ignored source of hidden inflammation and how you can eliminate it. It affects more than 20 million Americans, and you may be one of them.

  4. Lower Your Toxin Exposure. Toxic overload alone can trigger insulin resistance, make you fat, and cause diabetes, and it's far more common than you think. If your body is toxic, you can gain weight even without the extra calories.

I'll review simple yet effective ways to detoxify yourself without costly health spa treatments, and how to avoid the major hidden sources of toxins in your food and drink.

These four simple keys to health represent the core building blocks to a healthy life free of diabesity. Next, I map out The Blood Sugar Solution itself — the seven-step program that will help you reverse diabesity, lose significant weight, and feel absolutely great.

The 7-Step Blood Sugar Solution for Reversing Diabesity

You will discover the surprisingly few "ingredients" you'll need to grow healthy and brim with vitality. Here's just a brief outline:

Step 1: Testing. The easiest test for diabesity is the "mirror" test. Beyond that, there are two critical blood factors that you must get checked — and neither one of them is blood sugar. I'll tell you exactly what to ask for during your next doctor's visit.

Step 2. Eat Your Medicine! My 10 Simple Rules For Eating Safely will transform your health and energy beginning in just a matter of days. I'll also show you how to make the "perfect plate" for every meal … how to time your meals … and how you could trigger an amazing change in your health just by avoiding these two foods for two weeks. Try it!

Step 3: Get a Metabolic "Tune-Up" With Supplements. Widespread nutritional deficiencies play a huge role in diabesity because they slow down metabolism to the point where extra pounds start packing on. I name the supplements you should take, including the weight-loss "super fiber" that I recommend to each of my diabesity patients.

Step 4. Get Moving and Get Relaxed. You need to move — or you won't. Would you rather get your heart pumping one hour a day, or be dead 24 hours a day? Easy choice! I also talk about the critical need for you to find your "pause button." Stress makes you fat and relaxing makes you thin.

Step 5. Get Clean and Go Green. I'll show you the four easy habits that will help you flush away toxic overload on a daily basis. What's more, you'll learn the key to avoiding diabesity-triggering toxins in the first place.

Step 6. Get Personal. Functional Medicine is a personalized approach to health, so you must figure out what your body needs and where your imbalances lie. I'll provide you with advice that helps you make this program work best for you.

Step 7. Get Healthy Together. Getting support for your journey to health is a critical factor in your lasting success. Working together and supporting each other is strong medicine indeed, so I offer suggestions on building your own support network to ensure your success.

You'll Also See What Real-Life Success Looks Like

During this presentation, you'll also meet people who have experienced incredible health improvements by following this simple blueprint to health, even when conventional medicine had let them down.

You'll meet George, a 300-pound man whose entire biological system was in breakdown — obesity, inflammation, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, you name it. Most doctors would've treated his multiple symptoms with a cabinet full of pills, but the truth is, George only had ONE problem: diabesity.

We put him on The Blood Sugar Solution and the turnaround was amazing: he lost 140 pounds and today he feels great!

Then there's Parry. She underwent gastric bypass surgery and was still struggling with her health because the surgery didn't address her true problems. The foods she ate sent all the wrong "information" to her body. We needed to upgrade her biological software, and so we did.

She lost 80 pounds by following our program, and the safe, natural approach to health melted away the pounds faster than the gastric bypass!

They are just two of the thousands of people who are achieving perfect blood sugar, ideal weight, and energized health right now as you read this. Follow in their footsteps and I guarantee your health will be transformed as well.

Maggie Sergio: GMO & Pesticide Experiments in Hawaii: The Poisoning of Paradise

GMO & Pesticide Experiments in Hawaii: The Poisoning of Paradise

The tropical paradise of Hawaii is on the bucket list of many. Peaceful images of white sandy beaches, warm tropical waters and the welcoming spirit of Aloha is what draws tourists from around the globe. In 2012, Hawaiian tourism hit an all-time high. Visitors spent a record of $14.3 billion dollars and more tourists than ever before (close to 8 million people) visited the Hawaiian Islands last year.

Simultaneously, the vibrant ecosystems and biodiversity of the Hawaiian Islands are under serious attack by the unrestrained growth of the biotech industry. The average tourist coming to Hawaii to enjoy a vacation, get married or possibly invest in a time share isn't aware of the chemical contamination taking place due to unregulated GMO experiments and heavy pesticide use on the islands.

My intention with this article is to raise awareness and help shine a light on the environmental crisis that is happening right now, under our noses, in Hawaii. If action isn't taken quickly and soon, I am fearful of what the long term, unrestrained use of pesticides will do to the ecology of Hawaii. What the general public needs to know, is that GMO research in Hawaii requires the use of powerful restricted use pesticides.

A little over a month ago I was shocked to learn from a friend that Kauai and the rest of the Hawaiian Islands have become Ground Zero for open air testing of experimental pesticides and GMOs. After hearing this information I made my first visit to Kauai and researched what was happening on the island, and learned about the grassroots movement fighting back to stop the chemical trespass and assault on the environment.

This video, Molokai Mom, tells the story of one mother taking on Monsanto after her young son got sick from breathing in pesticide drift allegedly from Monsanto's fields near her home.

How did this happen? How the GMO industry snuck onto Kauai... and the rest of Hawaii

In the mid-1990s, the sugarcane industry collapsed and vacated much of the agricultural land on Kauai. That agricultural land is now either owned by the State of Hawaii or several private landholders. All of which lease the land out to the biotech industry. Specifically, the Big Six; Monsanto, Dow, Syngenta, BASF, Pioneer and Bayer.

What is taking place generally in GMO testing activities is research that involves the transferring of DNA from one species to another. This may include human genes introduced to crops such as corn, soy, rice and sugarcane and genetically engineered crops for use in the pharmaceutical industry. The end result is an organism (plant or animal) that would never occur in nature. For the farmers on Kauai that practice organic and sustainable agricultural practices, their crops are at risk for contamination. For the ecosystem(s) of the Hawaiian Islands, biodiversity is being threatened. For the people that live and work in the communities close to the GMO fields; their health and the health of their children is at risk from long term pesticide exposure.

The Garden Island of Kauai

On the west side of Kauai, in the town of Waimea, GMO test fields border on several communities and a school. In this small town, Atrazine has been detected in the water. Astonishingly, pesticide spraying is done without any buffer zones to public areas, schools or waterways. The spraying of undisclosed pesticides, often in combination with each other, can be done early in the morning, late afternoon or sometimes in the middle of the night. This practice of combining toxic pesticides, a process known as "Stacking," carries an enormous risk since the impact on the environment and human health is completely untested and unknown. Individually, some of the confirmed pesticides used; Atrazine, 2,4-D (a derivative of Agent Orange) Lorsban and Chlorpyrifos have proven to have serious impacts on health and the environment. One can only imagine the toxic pesticide cocktail that is created by this practice of "pesticide stacking" and other experiments.

Records obtained from the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture indicate that 22 different restricted use pesticides, totaling 3.5 tons, have been imported onto Kauai by five commercial agriculture entities and constitute approximately 99% of the restricted use pesticides utilized by agricultural operations on Kauai. The chemical companies on the Island of Kauai have refused to disclose this information to the public or to the co-sponsor of the pesticide ordinance mentioned later in this article, Kauai County Councilmember, Gary Hooser.

In my four years of serving on Marin County's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Commission, I have become familiar with reviewing lists of pesticides for approval and participating in open, public discussions about potential risks to people and the environment. I have grown accustomed to transparency with respect to pesticide use by my local government. It has been an honor to be part of a county wide citizen committee that passed an IPM Ordinance that incorporated pesticide buffer zones around schools and playgrounds, and listened to the demands of the public with respect to public disclosure about what pesticides are allowed to be used by the county. All in the interest of protecting public health, wildlife and the environment. (I do need to state that my comments in this blog post reflect my own as a private citizen, and are not meant to represent Marin County's IPM Commission in any way.)

After researching and learning about the GMO issue on Kauai, I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact that these companies can get away with nondisclosure and clandestine use of pesticides.

How on earth is this possible?

One day I took a drive to what I was told is one of most beautiful beaches in the state, Polihale State Park, on the western tip of Kauai. As I drove a little over 4 miles down a remote dirt road, past the Pacific Missile Range Facility, I came upon several GMO test fields. All of the fields had "No Trespassing Notices" like the one below. I never ventured onto private property, and took my photos from the road. The smaller signs (well out of my reach) within the fields contain information for the workers about recent spraying

2013-06-28-IMG_0657sm2.jpg

Driving slowly down the bumpy, red dirt road I couldn't help but notice the polarities around me. I stopped my car to get out and stand in awe of an ancient mountain range on the oldest island in Hawaii. I took in the majestic, sovereign hills that provided the backdrop to a valley that contains field after field of experimental GMO crops.

2013-06-28-IMG_0654sm2.jpg

I thought about the surrounding land, air, and the ocean just a short distance away. I then thought about these fields being saturated with experimental pesticides, and my heart broke wide open.

Lawsuits filed

On the west side of Kauai, people are getting sick, and two separate lawsuits have been filed by residents of the town of Waimea. One lawsuit that represents 150 people alleges that Pioneer, in its cultivation practices, has allowed pesticides and pesticide laden dust to escape and infiltrate into people's homes for the last 10 years.

Kids taken ill at School

The spraying of pesticides by Syngenta near Waimea Canyon Middle school has been suspected in causing children and teachers to become sick on several occasions between 2006 and 2008. In one incident at least 10 children collapsed and were sent to the hospital. An investigation was launched to find out why. Syngenta has denied that their spraying of pesticides was the culprit. Instead they claim that the plant "Stinkweed" was to blame for people becoming sick, not their GMO fields or use of pesticides that borders right up to the school. In speaking with some of the locals in Waimea, no one recalls stinkweed ever being an issue in the community.

Mystery of the Dead Heart Sea Urchins

In February 2012, between Waimea and Hanapepe on Kauai, a local dive company discovered a massive, sudden die off of heart sea urchins. It was estimated that approximately 52,000 sea urchins were dead on the ocean floor along the south side of island. Considering that the GMO fields are in abundance along the west and southwestern shores of Kauai, it is reasonable to look at GMO and pesticide run off as one possibility for the sudden die-off. An investigation was conducted by the State Department of Land and Natural Resources and USGS. However, testing the sea urchins for exposure to pesticides or GMOs was never done, and the results of the investigation were inconclusive for the sudden die-off.

An Ordinance is Introduced

On June 26 of this year, Kauai County Council Members Gary Hooser and Tim Bynum introduced Draft Bill 2491 If passed, this bill would give the County of Kauai the authority to regulate the commercial use of pesticides and GMOs. At the first public reading of this pesticide ordinance, it was estimated that 1000 people were in attendance. As I watched some of the public comments on a live streaming feed, I was aghast to listen to some of the testimony from Syngenta and Pioneer, when pressed by members of Kauai County Council to disclose what pesticides are being used, or for copies of experimental pesticide use permits issued by the EPA. To say these companies were dancing around the issue would be an understatement.

After reading the proposed ordinance it feels like an attempt at sanity. This ordinance requires that each of the GMO companies discloses what pesticides are being applied, and asks for public notifications from the companies. It requires that when spraying pesticides, buffer zones around schools, hospitals and other public places be put in place. It also calls for a temporary moratorium on the experimental use and commercial production of GMOs until the county has conducted an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on the health and environmental impact of the GMO industry. This is a necessary step in the right direction, and public comments are being accepted now by Kauai County Council.

What You Can Do for Kauai

If you are concerned about the alleged poisoning of paradise please share this article on social media sites, with the tourism industry and anyone you know that loves Hawaii and the spirit of Aloha. The world needs to know that Hawaii is ground zero for open air pesticide and GMO experiments.

On July 31, 2013 there will be a second public hearing on this issue, and possibly a vote. The Pesticide Action Network has been following this issue closely and has created the following website, Stop Poisoning Paradise.

Hey!? Why are Russians watching this blog???

Book review: Mindmelding: Consciousness, Neuroscience, and the Mind’s Privacy

Book review: Mindmelding: Consciousness, Neuroscience, and the Mind’s Privacy:
Mindmelding: Consciousness, Neuroscience, and the Mind’s Privacy. William Hirstein. Oxford University Press.
I found this book by accident, when somebody on Facebook happened to share a link to its Amazon page. I was intrigued to read the title, and even more intrigued to read the Amazon blurb:
William Hirstein argues that it is indeed possible for one person to directly experience the conscious states of another, by way of what he calls mindmelding. This would involve making just the right connections in two peoples’ brains, which he describes in detail. He then follows up the many other consequences of the possibility that what appeared to be a wall of privacy can actually be breached. Drawing on a range of research from neuroscience and psychology, and looking at executive functioning, mirror neuron work, as well as perceptual phenomena such as blind-sight and filling-in, this book presents a highly original new account of consciousness.

Terms of Participation (100,000 signatures, minimum required for action)

We invite you to participate in the We the People platform. You may use this platform on the White House website to create and sign petitions that call for the federal government to take action on a range of issues. For each topic included in We the People, you can petition the Administration to address a problem, support or oppose a proposal, or otherwise change or continue federal government policy or actions. As explained below, if a petition meets the signature goal within the designated period, the White House will respond to that petition in a timely fashion.

By participating in We the People, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms of Participation and to comply with all applicable laws and regulations.

We the People expands the options for contacting the White House and does not displace current official methods of communication, such as mailing or emailing the White House. If you are not willing to agree to We the People's Terms of Participation, but want to send a message, petition, or other form of communication to the White House, you may do so through the White House Office of Correspondence, which maintains a contact form and information about communicating with the White House at www.whitehouse.gov/contact.

In order to participate in We the People, you must create a WhiteHouse.gov User Account. You are required to use a valid email address when registering your account. Only one account per individual is allowed. You must be 13 or older in order to create an account and participate in We the People. You can always unsubscribe from future White House email by clicking on the "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of any WhiteHouse.gov email. Learn more about email subscriptions and updates.

You agree to only create petitions consistent with the limited purpose of the We the People platform, which is to allow individuals to petition the Administration to take action on a range of issues — to address a problem, support or oppose a proposal, or otherwise change or continue federal government policy or actions. To focus discussion, the platform is limited to a discrete set of topics, which may be adjusted over time.

You agree not to create petitions that fall outside this limited purpose—for example, petitions that advertise or call for the endorsement or purchase of commercial goods or services, petitions that expressly urge the support or opposition of candidates for elected office, petitions that do not address the current or potential actions or policies of the federal government, or petitions that address a topic not included in We the People at the time the petition was created.

You also agree not to post threats of unlawful violence or harm to any individual or group; obscene, vulgar, or lewd material; defamatory or fraudulent statements; terms commonly understood to constitute profanity or abusive or degrading slurs or epithets; information invading an individual's privacy; and information that if published would violate criminal law or give rise to civil liability. These categories of material are inconsistent with the limited purpose of We the People and the larger purpose and function of the White House's website.

Petitions that the moderator determines violate these Terms of Participation will be removed consistent with the We the People Moderation Policy; petitioners will be able to seek reconsideration of the removal. As part of the moderation system for We the People, participants will be able to flag a petition if they believe it violates these Terms. You agree to flag only those petitions you believe violate these Terms. You agree not to flag petitions for any other reasons, including your disagreement with the viewpoint reflected in a petition.

The White House will respond to petitions submitted through We the People that comply with these Terms of Participation and reach the second signature threshold listed below. Petitions on We the People must meet the first signature threshold in order to be publicly searchable on WhiteHouse.gov. Petitions that do not meet these signature thresholds will be removed from the site after the time limit has expired. The White House may elect to respond to petitions at any time, including those that have not crossed the first or second threshold.

To avoid the appearance of improper influence, the White House may decline to address certain procurement, law enforcement, adjudicatory, or similar matters properly within the jurisdiction of federal departments or agencies, federal courts, or state and local government in its response to a petition.

The White House reserves the right to change the time limits and signature thresholds and apply them to petitions created after the change has been published to this "Current thresholds" section:

AS OF JANUARY 15, 2013:

To cross the first threshold and be searchable within WhiteHouse.gov, a petition must reach 150 signatures within 30 days.

To cross the second threshold and require a response, a petition must reach 100,000 signatures within 30 days.

The Terms of Participation were updated on January 15, 2013. View our Terms of Participation Archive page to see the previous version
