http://www.epa.gov/radiation/docs/er/planning-guidance-for-response-to-nuclear-detonation-2-edition-final.pdf

INTRODUCTION

One of the most catastrophic incidents that could befall the United States (US), causing enormous loss of life and property and severely damaging economic viability, is a nuclear detonation in a US city. It is incumbent upon all levels of government, as well as public and private parties within the US, to prepare for this incident through focused nuclear attack response planning. Nuclear explosions present substantial and immediate radiological threats to life and a severely damaged response infrastructure. Local and State community preparedness to respond to a nuclear detonation could result in life-saving on the order of tens of thousands of lives.

The purpose of this guidance is to provide emergency planners with nuclear detonation- specific response recommendations to maximize the preservation of life in the event of an urban nuclear detonation. This guidance addresses the unique effects and impacts of a nuclear detonation such as scale of destruction, shelter and evacuation strategies, unparalleled medical demands, management of nuclear casualties, and radiation dose management concepts. The guidance is aimed at response activities in an environment with a severely compromised infrastructure for the first few days (i.e., 24 – 72 hours) when it is likely that many Federal resources will still be en route to the incident.

The target audiences for the guidance are response planners and their leadership.

Emergency responders should also benefit in understanding and applying this guidance. The target audiences include, but are not limited to, the following at the city, county, State, and Federal levels:

  • Emergency managers

  • Law enforcement authority planners

  • Fire response planners

  • Emergency medical service planners

  • Hazardous material (Hazmat) response planners

  • Utility services and public works emergency planners

  • Transportation planners

  • Medical receiver planners (e.g., hospitals)

  • Mass care providers (e.g., American Red Cross)

  • Other metropolitan emergency planners, planning organizations, and professional

organizations that represent the multiple disciplines that conduct emergency response activities

The planning guidance recommendations are focused on providing express consideration of the following topics relevant to emergency planners within the first few days of a nuclear detonation: 1) shelter and evacuation, 2) medical care, 3) population monitoring and decontamination, and 4) public preparedness – emergency public information.

Earthquakes, induced.

Tectonic Summary

Earthquakes in the Stable Continental Region

Natural Occurring Earthquake Activity

Most of North America east of the Rocky Mountains has infrequent earthquakes. Here and there earthquakes are more numerous, for example in the New Madrid seismic zone centered on southeastern Missouri, in the Charlevoix-Kamouraska seismic zone of eastern Quebec, in New England, in the New York - Philadelphia - Wilmington urban corridor, and elsewhere. However, most of the enormous region from the Rockies to the Atlantic can go years without an earthquake large enough to be felt, and several U.S. states have never reported a damaging earthquake.

Earthquakes east of the Rocky Mountains, although less frequent than in the West, are typically felt over a much broader region than earthquakes of similar magnitude in the west. East of the Rockies, an earthquake can be felt over an area as much as ten times larger than a similar magnitude earthquake on the west coast. A magnitude 4.0 earthquake in eastern or central North America can typically be felt at many places as far as 100 km (60 mi) from where it occurred, and it occasionally causes damage near its source. A magnitude 5.5 earthquake in eastern or central North America usually can be felt as far as 500 km (300 mi) from where it occurred, and often causes damage, sometimes as far away as 40 km (25 mi).

Most earthquakes in North America east of the Rockies occur as faulting within bedrock, usually miles deep. Few earthquakes east of the Rockies, however, have been definitely linked to mapped geologic faults, in contrast to the situation at plate boundaries such as California's San Andreas fault system, where scientists can commonly use geologic evidence to identify a fault that has produced a large earthquake and that is likely to produce large future earthquakes. Scientists who study eastern and central North America earthquakes often work from the hypothesis that modern earthquakes occur as the result of slip on preexisting faults that were formed in earlier geologic eras and that have been reactivated under the current stress conditions. The bedrock of Eastern North America is, however, laced with faults that were active in earlier geologic eras, and few of these faults are known to have been active in the current geologic era. In most areas east of the Rockies, the likelihood of future damaging earthquakes is currently estimated from the frequencies and sizes of instrumentally recorded earthquakes or earthquakes documented in historical records.

Induced Seismicity

As is the case elsewhere in the world, there is evidence that some central and eastern North America earthquakes have been triggered or caused by human activities that have altered the stress conditions in earth's crust sufficiently to induce faulting. Activities that have induced felt earthquakes in some geologic environments have included impoundment of water behind dams, injection of fluid into the earth's crust, extraction of fluid or gas, and removal of rock in mining or quarrying operations. In much of eastern and central North America, the number of earthquakes suspected of having been induced is much smaller than the number of natural earthquakes, but in some regions, such as the south-central states of the U.S., a significant majority of recent earthquakes are thought by many seismologists to have been human-induced. Even within areas with many human-induced earthquakes, however, the activity that seems to induce seismicity at one location may be taking place at many other locations without inducing felt earthquakes. In addition, regions with frequent induced earthquakes may also be subject to damaging earthquakes that would have occurred independently of human activity. Making a strong scientific case for a causative link between a particular human activity and a particular sequence of earthquakes typically involves special studies devoted specifically to the question. Such investigations usually address the process by which the suspected triggering activity might have significantly altered stresses in the bedrock at the earthquake source, and they commonly address the ways in which the characteristics of the suspected human-triggered earthquakes differ from the characteristics of natural earthquakes in the region.

And human induced seismic activity induces what? else? ...? Why are we rocking the world?

Monsanto to Acquire The Climate Corporation, Combination to Provide Farmers with Broad Suite of Tools Offering Greater On-Farm Insights | Monsanto Newsroom

Monsanto to Acquire The Climate Corporation, Combination to Provide Farmers with Broad Suite of Tools Offering Greater On-Farm Insights

ST. LOUIS

ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Monsanto Company (NYSE: MON) today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire The Climate Corporation for a cash purchase price of approximately $930 million. The acquisition will combine The Climate Corporation's expertise in agriculture analytics and risk-management with Monsanto's R&D capabilities, and will provide farmers access to more information about the many factors that affect the success of their crops. The companies' combined capabilities will support greater productivity while utilizing the planet's finite resources more precisely.

The acquisition is expected to expand on The Climate Corporation's leadership in the area of data science, which represents the agriculture sector's next major breakthrough, and will immediately expand both the near- and long-term growth opportunities for Monsanto's business and Integrated Farming Systems platform.

"The Climate Corporation is focused on unlocking new value for the farm through data science," said Hugh Grant, chairman and chief executive officer for Monsanto. "Everyone benefits when farmers are able to produce more with fewer resources. The Climate Corporation team brings leading expertise that will continue to greatly benefit farmers and their bottom-line, and we want to expand upon this tremendous work and broaden their reach to more crops and more world areas. We look forward to working closely with our distribution partners and others in the agricultural industry to bring this suite of information resources to the farm."

The Climate Corporation was founded in 2006 by a highly successful team of software engineers and data scientists formerly with Google and other leading Silicon Valley technology companies. Since that time, the company has built the agriculture industry's most advanced technology platform combining hyper-local weather monitoring, agronomic data modeling, and high-resolution weather simulations to deliver a complete suite of full-season monitoring, analytics and risk-management products.

"Farmers around the world are challenged to make key decisions for their farms in the face of increasingly volatile weather, as well as a proliferation of information sources," said David Friedberg, chief executive officer for The Climate Corporation. "Our team understands that the ability to turn data into actionable insight and farm management recommendations is vitally important for agriculture around the world and can greatly benefit farmers, regardless of farm size or their preferred farming methods. Monsanto shares this important vision for our business and we look forward to creating even greater experiences for our farmer customers."

The Climate Corporation has a core set of support tools to benefit farmers. These include products that help them boost yields on existing farmland and better manage risks that occur throughout a crop season. The Climate Corporation will continue to offer its current risk-management products including an online service that provides crop planning, monitoring, and recommendations, and insurance offerings through its network of independent agents.

The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the first quarter of Monsanto's 2014 fiscal year. Following the acquisition, The Climate Corporation will operate its business to retain its distinct brand identity and customer experience. The company will continue to maintain headquarters in Silicon Valley and all of its employees will be offered continued employment.

Combined Company to Be a Leader in Data Science, Acquisition Expected to Drive Near-and Long-Term Growth Potential

The acquisition of The Climate Corporation represents a natural extension of Monsanto's vision to increase crop productivity, conserve more of our planet's natural resources and improve the lives of people around the world. It will also greatly expand The Climate Corporation's capabilities in data science, agriculture's next major growth frontier, an area that represents a potential opportunity of $20 billion beyond Monsanto's core focus today. The companies estimate the majority of farmers have an untapped yield opportunity of up to 30 bushels to 50 bushels in their corn fields, and they believe that advancements in data science can help further unlock that additional value for the farm.

The combined capabilities will immediately expand both the near- and long-term growth opportunities of Monsanto's Integrated Farming Systems platform and research and development pipeline in the coming years.

Longer-term, the combination is expected to broaden the product choices available to farmers beyond Monsanto's current row crop and vegetable portfolio, both inside and outside of the United States. This includes the delivery of insight and decision-support tools that could increase agriculture productivity on a billion planted acres around the globe.

Monsanto and The Climate Corporation share a commitment to delivering innovation for farmers through a broad range of choices and service providers. Monsanto noted that, consistent with its broad-licensing and multi-channel approach to technology, it intends to deliver the value of The Climate Corporation's current and future applications through its distribution network.

Monsanto today also announced the company's financial results for its fiscal 2013 fourth quarter and full year, including the financial effect of The Climate Corporation acquisition. For more information about today's earnings announcement, see the press release and supporting resources available at www.monsanto.com.

Can I Reinstall Windows On My Computer Without the Bloatware?

Can I Reinstall Windows On My Computer Without the Bloatware?

Can I Reinstall Windows On My Computer Without the Bloatware?

Dear Lifehacker,
I recently got a new laptop that came with Windows pre-installed, but it came with a lot of extra bloatware I'd rather not have. Can I do a clean install of Windows over it, or will my product key not work with a vanilla install?P

Sincerely,
Bad BloatwareP

Dear Bad,
The short answer is yes—the product key that came with your computer will, in most cases, work with a vanilla installation of Windows. But first, we should mention that there is a simpler solution.P

Bloatware is always kind of a pain, but before you start running for the nuclear option, you might want to try uninstalling that bloatware yourself from the Add/Remove Programs menu. If you find bloatware that isn't listed in that menu, Revo Uninstaller might be able to help you. There are also programs like Decrap that will automatically uninstall all that bloatware for you—so I say try those first.P

That said, sometimes you still need to do a clean install for one reason or another. In that case, yes, it should be possible on most PCs. Here's the general process (though note that your mileage may vary, every PC may have its own little quirks).P

Step One: Find Your License KeyP

Can I Reinstall Windows On My Computer Without the Bloatware?

If your computer came with Windows pre-installed, you have a legit Windows license that you'll need to reinstall. First, check the bottom of your laptop or the back of your computer tower. There should be a sticker that has your Windows version and license key listed. Write both of those down before continuing.P

If you can't find a sticker, try running a utility like Magical Jelly Bean KeyFinder. It will scan your computer and find your license key for you.P

Lastly, many Windows 8 PCs come with the product key embedded in the BIOS. We haven't tried to reinstall Windows on one of these PCs, but a quick search reveals that they should automatically apply your product key when you reinstall with an ISO. Your mileage may vary, of course, and you may want to do a cursory search on your particular model to see if this works before you continue.P

Note: if there is any bloatware you want to keep—like a DVD playing program, or something of that nature—now would be a good time to open it up and see if you can find a product key in the "About" menu. Magical Jelly Bean KeyFinder may also be able to find other product keys for you.P

Step Two: Grab a Windows DiscP

Can I Reinstall Windows On My Computer Without the Bloatware?

If your laptop came with a recovery disc or partition, don't use it—it probably comes bundled with all the bloatware you're trying to avoid (and Windows 8's Refresh has the same issue). You'll need a vanilla installation disc, which is easy to get. You can either borrow one from a friend or download an ISO file straight from Digital River, Microsoft's official source for distributing installation discs. From there you can burn it to a DVD or USB drive.P

Update: it seems that within the past day or two, the Digital River links no longer work—apparently they were not intended for public use. For now, the best method is to borrow a CD from a friend or find it elsewhere. Sorry about the confusion.P

Note that this isn't piracy—you still need a valid license key to use these ISO files. That means when you get your disc, make sure it's for the same version of Windows as your license key. If your laptop comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, you'll need a Windows 7 Home Premium disc, and so on.P

If you borrow a disc from a friend that doesn't match—or if you need an ISO for Windows 7 Starter or Basic—download the Ei.cfg Removal Utility and run it on your ISO. Then, when you go to install Windows, it'll let you choose which edition you install. Remember, you have to install the version you have a key for, otherwise it won't activate (for obvious reasons).P

Step Three: Reinstall WindowsP

Can I Reinstall Windows On My Computer Without the Bloatware?

Now that you've got your Windows disc (or USB drive) ready, it's time to install Windows! You're probably familiar with this process, but just in case you aren't: insert your disc or drive and boot from it. If you're prompted to "press any key to boot from CD or DVD," do so, and you should enter the Windows installation.P

It's all pretty self-explanatory, except the partition screen. You may see a few different partitions on your disk, including one labeled "Recovery." This is the recovery partition that lets you restore Windows as it was when you bought your computer, bloatware and all. I usually delete the recovery partition and install Windows from scratch, but if you want to keep this recovery partition just in case—and have the hard drive space to spare—you can just highlight the "Windows" partition, click the Format button, and install Windows there.P

Run through the rest of the installation process according to the wizard and you should be all set. When you're prompted to activate Windows, type in your product key. Make sure you type in the correct key—those stickers are small and poorly printed, so its very easy to get the numbers and letters wrong the first time.P

If it doesn't work and you're sure it's the right key, tell it you'll wait to activate until later. You may have to click "Activate Over the Phone" and use Microsoft's automated system, which only takes a few minutes.P

Step Four: Install Your DriversP

Can I Reinstall Windows On My Computer Without the Bloatware?

Once Windows is ready to go, your last task is to install the necessary drivers for your computer. Head to your computer manufacturer's web site (e.g. Dell, Asus, or HP) and go to their Support section. You should be able to find your model of laptop or desktop, and find a list of available drivers.P

You'll almost certainly need drivers for the chipset, LAN, Wi-Fi, graphics, and audio. If you have a laptop, you may also need touchpad drivers for specific features, Bluetooth drivers, USB 3.0, or anything else that your computer may require. This varies from model to model, so be sure to check through the entire list and download whatever you think you might need.P

Once you've installed all your drivers, you may also want to head to Windows Update and download the necessary updates. You may have to restart and check for updates again a number of times to get them all.P

After that, you're all set to start using your computer! Check out our Lifehacker Pack to download other essential apps (like web browsers, antivirus software, and productivity tools) all in one package. Enjoy!P

Sincerely,
LifehackerP

We all need some help....

National Trust for Historic Preservation: 10 sites saved, 10 lost in 2013

The National Trust for Historic Preservation compiled a list of 10 historic preservation saves and losses from 2013.

10 Sites Saved:

1. Peavey Plaza, Minneapolis, Minn. — Preservationists persuaded the Minneapolis City Council to drop a demolition plan and undertake a rehabilitation plan instead.

2. Jensen-Byrd, Spokane, Wash. — Preservationists persuaded Washington State University to restore and reuse this 104-year-old former warehouse, rather than sell and demolish the structure.

3. Fort Monroe, Hampton, Va. — Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell approved a master plan to restore and revitalize this former military base.

4. Stamford Post Office, Stamford, Conn. — A federal court ruled against the sale and demolition plan for this historic post office. The ruling could help preservationists save historic post offices nationwide.

5. Montana's Upper Missouri River Breaks, Central Montana — The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled the Bureau of Land Management violated laws protecting historic sites along this national monument.

6. Terminal Island, Port of Los Angeles — Vacant historic buildings at this former shipbuilding center from World War I and World War II could be saved under a plan approved by the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners.

7. Wrigley Field, Chicago — Earlier plans for massive renovations of this historic ballpark have been amended to address the concerns of preservationists.

8. Five National Monuments designated by President Barack Obama — Each site represents a diverse chapter in American history from the Native American and Latino communities of Rio Grande del Norte to the Underground Railroad and the Buffalo Soldiers of the Civil War.

9. New Orleans' Saenger Theatre — This historic 1920s movie house and performing arts space was severely damaged in Hurricane Katrina but reopened to the public in October after rehabilitation.

10. Waterfront, Charleston, S.C. — A federal court found the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers violated preservation laws when it approved the construction of new cruise ship terminals on the waterfront.

10 Sites Lost:

1. Prentice Women's Hospital, Chicago — After a long battle during which advocates urged preservation of the building, the way was cleared for the structure's demolition.

2. Cyclorama Center, Gettysburg, Pa. — The removal of the Cyclorama Center from the Gettysburg National Park is a loss for advocates of 20th century architecture, though it was supported by some preservationists under the grounds that it would improve the interpretation of the battlefield's history.

3. Chinese Hospital, San Francisco — Once the only medical facility available to the local Chinese community, the historic hospital was marked for demolition to make room for a new hospital center.

4. The Pagoda Palace Theater, San Francisco — The historic vaudeville theater and movie house was razed in 2013 after 20 years of vacancy and failed proposals for redevelopment.

5. World Port Terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York — Was listed among the 11 most-endangered historic sites. Delta Airlines began demolishing the jet-age structure and plans to turn it into an aircraft parking zone.

6. Univision Building, San Antonio, Texas — Demolition began in November of this 1955 site known as the birthplace of Spanish-language broadcasting, to make way for new apartments.

7. St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church, Pittsburgh, Pa. — The first Croatian parish in the Western Hemisphere was demolished after the diocese closed its doors in 2000.

8. Charleston County Public Library, Charleston, S.C. — A court case allowed demolition to proceed on this first racially integrated library, built with an open, contemporary design.

9. Hojack Swing Bridge, Rochester, N.Y. — The historic railroad bridge was demolished after a 10-year fight by preservationists.

10. Pompey's Pillar Vandalism and Government Shutdown — Nine days after the U.S. government shutdown began, this sandstone pillar marking the expedition of Lewis and Clark was vandalized with a new signature carved into the stone while no rangers were guarding the site.

10 Mind Blowing Documentaries

10 MIND BLOWING DOCUMENTARIES

10 Mind Blowing Documentaries
January 26, 2014 - Compiling just 10 is difficult so weve created a full list of recommended documentaries with summarised ratings here. There will be weekly additions to our documentary and film page so keep an eye out and if you have any films youd like to recommend, please comment with them below and we will get round to replying and watching them all where time permits.

Belief is the death of intelligence. Robert A Wilson

These documentaries are not listed as being 100% fact, theyve been chosen for their thought provoking content and many discuss new ideas and concepts that are either currently impossible to be scientifically explored or have yet to be explored enough. As a note, Einsteins special relativity theory was published in 1905 but wasnt actually fully accepted into the physics community until 1920. So, I prefer not to dismiss the exploration of new ideas just because they do not adhere to the status quo, for that is the only way we make progress. So, onto the mind blowing documentaries:

1. CENTURY OF THE SELF

The Century of the Self is a thought provoking, four part documentary describing how Freudian and post-Freudian ideas about human nature were adopted by corporations and politicians to manipulate society and public values in the 20th Century. There is a particular focus on the influence of Edward Bernays, the inventor of public relations, on American culture, business, and politics. This is a well crafted, engagingly paced, and consistently interesting documentary, which has since developed a bit of a cult following.

The Century Of Self: Happiness Machines (Episode1) from Roses of Time on Vimeo.

2. COSMOS WITH CARL SAGAN

Often referred to as the greatest educational series of all-time. Carl Sagans ability to clearly communicate complex concepts in simple language without washing down the content of his explanations is such a rare approach. If you have the slightest curiosity about how the Universe works, this is the ultimate documentary series, taking you on a complete 13 hour ride through the Cosmos. The entire series is available on Youtube:

3. LOVE, REALITY AND THE TIME OF TRANSITION

Hold your presumptions on this one, its probably not what you think. This documentary approaches the new age and all you need is love mindsets to question the over embracing of love and denial of negative reality. Id be very interested to hear the opinions of Live Learn Evolve readers on this one, please comment below if youve seen it.

4. 2012: TIME FOR CHANGE

Once again hold any presumptions, this documentary is not advocating the end of the world. Led by Daniel Pinchbeck this film covers topics like sustainability, mind and consciousness expansion, permaculture, energy, spirituality, tribal rituals, psychedelic experiences, economy, social relationships and more. It explores the ever growing problems we face as a culture and surprisingly offers thoughtful solutions which can all be put in place with todays technology.

The corporation as a psychopath. Our daily lives are dominated by corporations, most goods, services, information and entertainment now flow from huge multinationals. But what if this dominant player in our existence is certifiably insane? This film is a compelling story of the evil that can be and is done by and in the name of corporations. Piles of detailed examples on top of interviews on top of documentary film clips, highly recommended.

A powerful visual masterpiece that takes you on a tour of the globe. If man sends another Voyager to the distant stars and it can carry only one film on board, that film might be Baraka. It uses no language, so needs no translation. It speaks in magnificent images, natural sounds, and music both composed and discovered. It regards our planet and the life upon it and stands outside of historical time. Highly recommend its follow up film Samsara too, which can be found here

Collaborative documentary piecing together some of the most thought provoking clips from some of the most recent internationally renowned philosophical icons including Alan Watts, Terrence Mckenna and Stephen Fry. Other themes include our creativity, our power as individuals and the power as a collective to manifest our own reality.

8. ZERO POINT: VOLUME 2 - THE STRUCTURE OF INFINITY

The Structure of Infinity takes a more focused look at the fractal nature of the Universe. Through examination of The Mandelbrot set and Fractal Geometry, the second volume takes us on a journey through the Fractal Universe culminating in a paradigm shifting view on the nature of reality itself. I recommend watching the first volume if you are unfamiliar with Graham Hancocks work, as for the other volumes, they are still on my watch list.

9. THE TERRENCE MCKENNA EXPERIENCE

An experimental digital montage film created by filmmaker Ken Adams, a neighbourhood friend and collaborator of Terence McKenna. It features never before seen, unscripted monologues that look for new ways of explaining the psychedelic experience. The film kindly offers a pay what you want approach, which weve linked to below:

10. DMT: THE SPIRIT MOLECULE

DMT The Spirit Molecule takes you on a journey to explore the possibilities of what this molecule, DMT could mean to man kind. Although flawed in places if youre unaware of DMT this documentary does an amazing job of explaining both the experiences of the substance and the science of the mind. Medical doctors, physical scientists, artists, and spiritual seekers work together to explore and quantify the effects of potentially the worlds most powerful psychotropic substance.

Public Enemy Number 1: Stress – A Connection to Space Weather's Daily Impacts

Our biological bodies are responding to stress in many different ways and it can be a trigger in sudden death through heart attacks and strokes, or even in diseases like cancer. Stress factors are individual, however, there are some biological stressors all humans have in common.

People generally refer to it as sensitivity to changes in the weather, and most of us have experienced it or know someone who has, be it family or friends. Of those who claim to feel changes in weather or seasons, the most common examples are spring fever and winter depression.

So what? Why is this happening and what is causing it?

It is important to pay attention to the fact that we live in an environment where everything is in constant change, even though we are not aware of many of these changes taking place.

The geomagnetic field is creating a underlying a set of frequencies that are also steering the 24 hour day and night rhythm, via the Pineal Gland which is located in the middle of a vertebrate's brain. Studies have shown that, periods with geomagnetic disturbances, add an additional stress factor to our environment and to our state of health, well being.

Hans Selye, was a Hungarian who pioneered endocrinologist and introduced his work about the General Adaptation Syndrome in 1936 with a model that shows in three phases what the alleged effects of stress have on the body.

The paper 'On the Nature of People's Reaction to Space Weather and Meteorological Weather Changes' from Khabarova and Dimitrova (2009) make a connection to space weather and Selyes work. The research team summarized:

"He showed that the human organism's response to any permanent stressors is always the same (this means nonspecific reaction of the organism). From this point of view, there is no difference which factor affects the people – sharp meteo-weather changes or space weather changes, the medical devices register the same picture for any detectable health status characteristic."

So any permenant stress will invoke the same response in the body; the body does not categorize sensational changes. Furthermore, in Khabarova and Dimitrova work:

"In spite of relatively not too high linear correlation between long time series of weather (or space weather) parameters and human health characteristics, the sharp changes of weather and space weather definitely stimulate a sharp response of the human organism. We have proved that these changes are identical for human reaction to any "weather" type. There is no difference for an organism - which stressor affects it. Its response is typical demonstration of the General Adaptation Syndrome by Hanz Selye."

In Selyes General Adaption Syndrom Model, he shows three stages of stress: Reaction, Resistance, and Exhaustion. The stage of Exhaustion is most dangerous because the body becomes susceptible to any diseases.

Khabarova and Dimitrova were determining an increase in the number of cardiac and infectious diseases, traffic and industrial accidents, heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths, cellular changes, etc. during short-period variations of space weather and geomagnetic field. In their paper, Khabarova and Dimitrova  also observed bio-effects during quiet space weather periods without geomagnetic disturbances, which leads to the conclusion that it's not the intensity of an event that matters, but that it can just be the fact that there is a "small" change or "low" variation in activity which disrupts the established pattern, Earth's resonance frequency.

Why is this more important than ever?

Earths environment is in a constant state of change and at the moment we are going through a period in which the magnetic poles are moving a tad rapidly and the Earth's magnetic field is weakening. As a result, less strength of the magnetic field means less shields around the planet and so any and all space weather events have a bigger impact on the Earth.

NASA's Article 'Earth's Inconstant Magnetic Field' points this out:

"Earth's magnetic field is changing in other ways, too: Compass needles in Africa, for instance, are drifting about 1 degree per decade. And globally the magnetic field has weakened 10% since the 19th century."

So, knowing all of that, what can be done in times of change?

In times of stress, calming down is essential so there are different techniques to help the body handling stressors. Even short, deep-breathing and meditation exercises will change conciousness if done on a regular basis.

Just 10 minutes of breathing exercises will lead to calmer reactions in stressful situations and this effort will snowball over time, which can lead to a healthier lifestyle and prolonged life span.

Here is an excellent PDF on a few Kundalini Meditation Techniques proven to alleviate stress, addiction:

Pull Quote:

"In modern culture, the imbalance is pandemic. If we are not addicted to smoking, eating, drinking, or drugs, then we are addicted subconsciously to acceptance, advancement, rejection, emotional love, etc. All these lead us to insecure and neurotic behavior patterns. The imbalance in this pineal area upsets the radiance of the pineal gland itself. It is this pulsating radiance that regulates the pituitary gland. Since the pituitary regulates the rest of the glandular system, the entire body and mind go out of balance. This meditation corrects the problem (Yogi Bhajan cited in Khalsa, 1988).

Meditation to balance the Jupiter and Saturn energies: A technique useful for treating depression, focusing the mind, and eliminating self-destructive behavior Description of technique.

Sit with a straight spine. The hands are facing forward with the ends of the Jupiter (index) and Saturn (middle) fingers pointing straight up near the sides of the body at the level of the eye. Close the ring and little fingers down to the palm using the thumbs. The Jupiter finger and the Saturn finger are spread open in a "V" shape (or closed). The eyes are closed. For 8 minutes open and close the Jupiter and Saturn fingers approximately once per second or two."

Wow.
