Fwd: Friday Q&A: Bluetooth Classes & Apple AirPods

Subject: Friday Q&A: Bluetooth Classes & Apple AirPods

Happy Friday!

I received this question a few weeks back:

"Nick, what Bluetooth Class are Apple AirPods?"

Before I answer, let's review what a Bluetooth class is in the first place.

As I first learned from EMF activist Lloyd Burrell (1) back when I wrote The Non-Tinfoil Guide to EMFs, there are 3 kinds of Bluetooth classes. The Class 1 devices, Class 2, and Class 3.

The lower the class number, the higher the range, and generally the more radiation the device emits.

(The Non-Tinfoil Guide to EMFs, page 155. I later learned that there is a 4th Bluetooth Class, the Class 1.5. (2))

Most new devices these days use a Bluetooth Class 1 chip, which offers higher power, better connectivity, etc. This includes the latest "H1" chip included in the 2nd generation of Apple AirPods, which now fall under the Bluetooth Class 1. (3)

What does that mean? It means that the 2nd generation of Apple AirPods emit more EMFs than the previous generation.

What does that mean for you? If you want to actively reduce your EMF exposure, using Bluetooth earbuds or headphones simply doesn't make sense.

Some argue that the SAR (specific absorption rate) of these AirPods is lower than most cell phones, and that's true.

However, the "SAR" rating of a device only looks at thermal effects, a mostly bogus standard that does NOT assess how dangerous or safe devices are. In plain English, the fact that a device has a low SAR basically doesn't make it any safer.

A huge concern is also that while a lot of users use a cell phone on their ear (if you're one of my readers I sure hope you know better and you never do this...), AirPods and other Bluetooth ear pieces or gizmos are INSIDE your ear, several millimeters closer to your brain.

And considering that:

1) The radiofrequency radiation emitted by cell phones AND Bluetooth devices has been classified as a Class 2B carcinogen back in 2011...

2) A lot of top scientists (4) argue that based on the same criteria used in 2011, this EMF radiation should be reclassified as a Class 1 "Definite Carcinogen"...

...then thinking that Bluetooth devices are "completely safe" is pure delusion.

Sure, the AirPods and other Bluetooth devices do follow our "EMF Guidelines", last updated by the FCC in 1996. These deprecated, laughable guidelines created by engineers, not biologists.

In the end, you're responsible for making your own choices.

But my advice as your EMF advisor is to avoid all Bluetooth devices unless they can be turned into Airplane Mode -- like my Oura Ring, for example.

Better be safe than sorry. Living a healthier life might require saying "no" to convenience.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, and enjoy your weekend! :)

Nick
